Have a friend that owns a old West Virginia State Police M16, he was with the Ohio State Highway Patrol when he bought it. It is in excellent condition. He is looking to sell it and I was wondering if anyone could give a estimate of market value.

between 8-15K, probably... more or less depending on the rarity of the receiver. know who made it?

If it's a transferable M16 in excellent condition, I'd say $12k - $15k easily...probably more, depending on the maker and the buyer.

I would say an easy 12K based on some prices I saw recently for similar M16's.

I believe that those are known at the SP1 variant. Maybe our resident Colt Nazi :D will be along to give a better answer.

Just FYI, my friend sold a Vietnam-era M16A1 for $9,500 a few months ago. I cannot remember the brand, but I know that I had never heard of it before. So I would say that a Colt M16 would be substantially higher value as compared to the one my buddy sold. But that's just my assumption.

By no means am I an authority, but there are several variations of the Colt M16 that do not have the forward assist. These are the R601 (original production) and R602 (produced for the Air Force). Both are labeled Colt AR-15 Cal .223. The prices vary depending on condition of the firearm. I recently saw one in excellent condition go for $10,500. I personally thought that was a really good price for the condition of the rifle. Also, there are some out there with 1/14 twist barrels. These are fairly rare and would fetch a high price, but it is hard to say without actually seeing the rifle.

It is hard to say. What is the writing on the lower receiver?

Is it US property marked?
