I need an accurate .22LR bolt action rifle; don't want to spend $1600 on Anschutz.

What do y'all recommend for a reasonable amount of money?

Several people at one of our local ranges are shooting CZs. They appear to be really well made and might be worth a look.

I'd also recommend the CZs. I have a 452 Varmint in .17HMR.

What are you using it for? Will it be a hunting rifle? A competition target rifle? Or just a plinker?

If it's just a plinker, I picked up a .22 at the last gun show for about $100. It's a bolt action training rifle made in Romania for their boys military academy. It's stamped with a SN in the low 1000s, an armory proof, and "1984" on the breech. No idea who made it, but it's magazine fed. The little sucker is accurate as heck! I've hit golf balls with it out to 100 yards using iron sights. Which reminds me, it's got blades for 25, 50, and 100 yards in the flip-up style.

i have one of the russian cm-2's and its crazy accurate. the factory test target is a 5rd 8mm group at 50 meters, the manual says that they wont release one with anything larger than a 10mm group. ive seen them for the $400-$500 range on gun broker

CZ 452 American

Agree, I have a 452 in LH, and it has been the best bolt action rimfire I've ever owned for build quality, and accuracy. A related model to consider if you are RH is the new 453 American model, with the heavy target barrel and single-set trigger (my Dad owns one and loves it). Obviously I think an Anschutz would have somewhat better build quality (that's what you get for the higher price), but if you compare a SPORTER Anschutz to the CZ 452 (as opposed to the high-end competition Anschutz rimfires), I'd be shocked if it was any more accurate out of the box. Many of the 452's, including mine, are capable of shooting MOA or better at 100 yards.

I have a CZ453 with the "set" trigger... will consistently shoot 1 ragged hole at 50 yards with quality ammo if I do my part... Mine came with no iron sights so I mounted a cheap Tasco scope... Most accurate .22LR I've had my hands on... I also have a Romanian M1969 training rifle... with iron sights... not nearly as accurate... but $89 vs $450... iron vs scope... I can still put a few in the same hole... though not as many and not consistently... .22LR = cheap fun!

I'll chime in with another recommendation for CZ. Incredibly accurate right out of the box. One caveat if you're going to mount a scope -- the angle of the bolt handle requires you to use high mount scope rings, which can affect your cheek weld.

CZ. Just got a 452 myself. They are nice rifles.

Thanks for the replies. I'm weighing the 452 or the 453.

By the way, I can't even see a golf ball at 100 yards.

I would go with a CZ 452/453. If you want to save some money get the CZ 513 which is a very similiar rifle but has a beech instead of walnut stock.

If it has to be a bolt, then a CZ is all that comes to mind.

I will Ditto the CZ. I have owned MANY .22 LR (Except for Anshutz). And for the money I think that you could not FIND a better .22 Rifle. Before I bought mine, I had the chance to shoot a 452 in .17 HMR at 200 Yards with a Pride Fowler Scope. WOW, it was an accurate rifle.

I personally decided to buy the CZ 513, which is also catologed as the "Military Trainer". Because I like to shoot with iron sights. And even though it has a beechwood stock, the wood is attractive in appearance (I hand-picked my stock from the dealer, One thing about CZ (wood stocked) rifles is that there is a lot or variation from one gun to another in the appearance of the wood.

The rifle comes with a set of iron sights, which adjust from 25 yards out to 200 yards. Using the iron sights only with CCI High Velocity 36 gr HP I have shot groups at 100 Yards just under 1.5 MOA. CZ rifles are VERY accurate.

SkiDevil:)

P.S. Try MANY different brands/ loads in your rifle. You will be surprised that some of the most accurate rounds can end-up being some of the cheapest. I have personnally found CCI to be the most consistenly accuarate rimfire ammo in all of my .22lr firearms. I have also had luck with Federal 710 (.22lr 40 gr Copper RN) and 510 (.22lr 40 gr Lead RN). - For general plinking.

CCI - Mini-Mags, Pistol Match, Green Tag, and High Velocity HP - Target Shooting

FINALLY - If you decide to clean the barrel w/ Brush and patches. BE CAREFUL with the TYPE of rod that you used. I read that you should use a coated .17 one-piece cleaning rod. I was sceptical so I used my .22 Dewey rod and got it stuck in the barrel. It took me and my father about 2-3 minutes to pull the rod out of the barrel (and I bench press twice my bodyweight/ 200+). If you don't want to buy a .17 rod, then get a BoreSnake. That is what I use to clean my barrel and it works just fine.

CZ-452. I love my "Trainer". I wanted a new mid-level .22 (I didn't like the feel of any of the lower priced guns like the Marlins and Savage .22s).

I'm a .22 precision nut. Ammo will play a big part of the game too. I got a bunch of the Eley Biathlon match at a good deal.....really just Tenex with different lube. I don't like to miss. ;) I do a lot of depredation with the fed warden down this way on the grackles.

If you keep your eye open, you can pick up the older 54 sporters and 1700/1710 sporters for under $1k......nothing wrong with the 541 or the brno but the Anschutz are the nutz if you really want to stack the bullets on top of one another. They also hold their value very well.

If I miss a quail in the noggin at 50yds while I'm deer hunting, it's not the guns fault.

An Anschutz 64 MPR is recommended if you want a heavy barrel unit. With a 6-18 Leupold optic, mine puts Wolf Match Extra into .3 to .5 inch groups at 50 yards. Another good ammunition is the various Eley offerings. The 64 action isn't as rigid as the 54 series, but the 64 series rifles are probably in the $800 range rather than closer to two grand.

Savage MKII FVT comes with a wiliams reciever sight, add a 20MOA scope mount from EGW

http://egw-guns.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=280

and a decent scope and your set. and you have back up irons in case you damage the scope...or just for fun

Mine shoots into a dime at 25-50 yards, and a bit bigger at 100 yards with the iron sights

expect to pay around $325-350 fot the rifle

got mine in April its now somewhere near 3000rds fired and shoots as good (or better) today as when new, and thats with the cheap federal lead bullet 22lr
