Is the FF handguards that require the barrel to be removed worth the extra effort ( and trip to the smith ) or are the delta ring removal version just as good?

How are you defining worth/better?

There are many more options available to you if you don't care about having to disassemble the barrel assy and remove the barrel nut.

The proper way to remove the delta ring is by removing the barrel. :D

You can dremel it off. But many of the better rails require replacement of the factory barrel nut, necesitating the pullin gof the barrel.

If you don't want to or can't do it, send the upper to Grant or ADCO and have them do it.

Or just use an Omega rail or similar and call it a day.

I did a little research into this recently, and was pointed to these two websites that I found very helpful.
