View Full Version : Non-throwlever, absolute cowitness 30mm aimpoint mount
The new Daniel Defense T-1 mount and the possibility that it will come out in an absolute-cowitness (meaning, iron sight line right down the center of the bore) has me wanting to try something with the 30mm tube. I don't need a throwlever mount so I'd prefer not to spring for it, but I do want something that's unobtrusive and since I'm not getting the throwlever function should also be less expensive. So, requirements are:
-mount for 30mm Aimpoint (C3, M/ML series, etc.)
-absolute cowitness (iron sight line down the center of the tube)
-fixed mount (no throwlever)
-unobtrusive attachment (no large knobs etc. sticking off the side. in other words, no QRP)
Anything like this exist?
Something like the Midwest Industries (http://www.brownells.com/aspx/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?pid=22131) might work if I replace the thumb screw with a smaller nut, but even at the discount price it's $100 which seems excessive given that the ADM throwlever mount (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=26581/Product/AD-68_AIMPOINT_MOUNT) is the same price.
That's my issue with the Midwest Industries mount as well. You pay th esame or more for less features. If it were in the price range of the DD mounts, as I think it should be, I think it would be a very viable option.

Maybe I need to scour some of the BST boards as the MI mount really shouldn't sell for more than $50 used. Frankly, it really shouldn't sell for more than $75 new.
Anyone know the distance from the top of the pic rail to the inside of the scope ring on an absolute cowitness mount? Strikes me that I could just use any 30mm scope ring that was the right height.

Use a Burris High X-treme ring.

I believe it is 1.4".
I was tempted to try this with the Badger X-High .50 mount, which would have allowed me to do 2 rifles for like $80 per rifle. In the end, since I already had the mounts it didn't really make sense to spend more money to spend less money, if you know what I mean.
Fortunately, or unfortunately from a measuring standpoint, while I have Aimpoint mounts all over the place, none are absolute.

Just measure from the top of the rail to the FSP centered in the rear peep, or if you have the tools, measure from the bottom of a BUIS to the center of the aperture.
Looks like the sights are 1 3/8" above the rail, so (given that 30mm=1 3/16") that would put me 1 3/32" from top of rail to bottom of the inside of the ring. I imagine 1" would be fine. Thanks F2S.
ETA:
I think the extra high Burris (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=847638) is what I'll try.

Every report I've read says the Xtra-High provides lower 3rd cowitness, and the High provides absolute cowitness. IIRC there's a review in the link I posted where the reviewer commented that the High ring cowitnessed perfectly.
Rob,
Did you get a chance to try it yet? I am curious to hear your results.

Also very interested in how the burris high ring worked out for you. I had a burris extra high xtr ring and a clonepoint that gave me a lower 1/3 cowitness, so should be same for actual aimpoint.
Also, anyone have the weights for the high and xtra high rings?
Thanks :)
Update: Just weighed the Burris XTR extra high ring, its 3.4 oz.
My ADD kicked in and I moved on to other projects. Someone else is going to have to be the guinea pig on this one guys. :D

I always liked the KAC Cantilever mount, but they're pricey.
Hitman1012 has one for sale in the EE here.

i've become a huge fan of modifying the QRPs i always find on ebay for $25-$55
i have a few of these plates from chopping carry handles.. cut to fit, drill new hole, hack the old knob off, put whatever knob/nut you want on. i think i pulled this knob off an aimpoint low-mount ring. this one probably cost me a grand total of $30 and 30 minutes of my life.

Weaver has a new one out
http://www.weaveroptics.com/rings_bases/tactical/aimpoint_micro_mount.aspx
they gave me one of the offset mounts
http://www.weaveroptics.com/rings_bases/tactical/offset_rail_adaptor.aspx
retails for like 30 bucks
for the Aimpoint mount, the little lever/nut is pretty clever
