I have always wanted an AR15 just for fun shooting and I have someone who will sell me their AR15. Is it worth the purchase with the price and availability of ammo being out of whack? So where do you guys see the ammo availability going over the next months/years? Is it worth purchasing the rifle in anticipation that low prices and better availability will return? Should I get the rifle while I can? I have had to work my wife over pretty well to get this far so I woud hate to get to the point of purchase and turn it down... I am getting the exact specs on it today. I already know the price.

I also have a lower built that I was going to complete before this complete rifle came along. Now I can take my time and find an upper that I want.

Thanks
Andy

If you are getting a good price on the rifle sure.
Ammo availability is improving prices are still a little high but barring any thing crazy they should drop.
If you are really worried about ammo prices you could get a 22lr conversion http://www.spikestactical.com/z/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=26&products_id=122
Or the 5.45x39mm upper http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/smith-wesson-545x39-mm-ar-15-upper.aspx?a=506921

Prices for 5.45x39mm ammo http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Russian_5.45x39_FMJ.html

I would suggest to learn the AR-15 system with .223 first before making a conversion and do your home work to find what will work best for you.

Thanks. I emailed my wife to see if she received the specs yet. I am looking to purchase from her boss's brother.

Whether it is worth purchasing depends on what you're getting (i.e. brand/build components), what condition it is in, and the asking price.

Regarding ammo availability and cost, I think we're starting to see things return to the shelves. The last gun show I went to had a lot of ammo. The weird thing was the prices were high on some calibers (i.e. .380, 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP) and returning to normal on others (i.e. .223 and 5.7x28). -I don't have anything in 5.7 but I noticed it was at its normal pre-election price.

It's just supposition on my part, but I think the hoarders are running out of money and the speculators are unable to move what they've already bought. The private individuals at the gun show who were trying to resell the ammo they bought at retail chains seemed to have no takers. A couple of months ago, that was not the case.

Going forward, the issues affecting ammo probably will be where the dollar is in the market (if it's weak, expect bullets to cost more) and making green (lead free) ammo the new standard.

like the others said"find out the maker" andif you are going to just shoot paper at the range from time to time you should be ok with most brands Good luck with your purchase:)

Around here that is like asking a Heroin addict if it is a good idea to buy dope. Most here have the Black Rifle Disease so bad that we are all looking for our "next fix". :D

Need Aimpoint, need Aimpoint...

Put it this way, they never get cheaper, per se - you cannot deny the supply/demmand cost bumps, but that is fairly temporary unless Congres and the anit-Christ make laws to outlaw them.

Prices have already made a marked decline in the last couple of weeks alone, from what I've seen. Suddenly there are rifles everywhere and prices are close to where they were before the election. Like others have said, ammo is still high, but again it is coming down and in stock.

These places are getting ammo on a regular basis now:

aimsurplus (http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/223.html) (must call for availability)
ammoman (http://www.ammoman.com/)
AmmunitionToGo (http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalog1/index.php/cName/rifle-ammo-223-556)
wideners (http://wideners.com/itemview.cfm?dir=18|830|845)

Let us know what you're being offered and you can get some objective advice. Maybe we can even help you talk your wife into getting it for you? ;)

Thanks. My wifes boss didn't want to email the list for whatever reason, I guess didn't want big brother knowing. Hopefully she will be calling to read it to me today and I can post it up.

Ok so I haven't found out any more details except that he wants $1500 and it hasn't been fired since 1981...

Hmm I don't thins that is what I am looking for, so now it becomes what kind of upper should I get for my lower.

I am looking for a flat top upper, chambered in 5.56 1:7 twist 16" or 18" chrome lined free floating barrel, low profile gas block, free float forearm with picatinny rails for additions, and fold down front/rear iron sights.

If it's a Colt (good chance) from 1981 I would look into it if I were you. I've learned my lesson about passing on guns before I know exactly what it is. Always look into it when someone tells you they have a gun for sale. It's a 1:Mil chance, but you would kick yourself if you found out that you passed on a transferable M-16 for $1500. I'm no collector, but I would think that a nice SP-1 would be worth that even.

Guns are tools. Who out there doesn't need more tools. Every household in the Country needs at minimum 1 rifle, 1 shotgun and 1 pistol + 1k ammo for each rifle and pistol. Most of us have enough to outfit the block.
