Hmmm....you going on vacation anytime soon far from the home....???? :p
Yup. All you need to do is get past the alarm, the dog, the armed & trained wife, then move 3/4 ton of ammo out the front door without attracting the attention of any of my neighbors before they call the cops. Good luck!

No shit!!!
Todd I'd be willing to bet there isn't that much .556 on retail shelves in the entire state of Arkansas.
I've noticed .223/5.56 is easier to get, at least at Walmart and Cabella's.
9mm, .45ACP, .38 Special and most any other caliber is difficult to find. I can find a little bit of .40S&W at my local Walmart.
Hell, even .22lr is getting a difficult to find.
It makes me want to shoot something but I don't want to waste the ammo I do have.:confused::(
It's sad that I'm begining to think of my 5 and 10 round mags as hi-cap.

That's what? Enough to last you five months? Or is this test going to last all of '09?
BTW:I have nothing but envy(hate?) in my heart for you right now.;)
DAMN!!! No wonder I can't find any ammo ;)
Good for you, bro! Wish it was me, but, good for you!!!

Good thing it showed up before ze Germans come ;) . My GF wonders why I need about 2000 rounds hanging out around the house. If you're ever in Alaska I'll take you fishing for a couple boxes.

Thats just not right... Ammo whore!:D
At this point in the ammo buying frenzy if you had shown me a picture of your new 110 foot yacht I would not be as jealous as I am of that mountain of brass. :D

Leads me to wonder how much one's skills with a given weapon would improve if one were to fire 50k rounds in 6 months.
Personally even at the peak of my training in the Army we were firing about 600-800 rounds through our carbines a week. We did this for about 8 months and the improvement was drastic.

Are you sure it's legal to have that much ammo in the communist state of MD?:D

Probably worthy of a thread all it's own, but since this one was silly to begin with we can derail it without any guilt.
Like any amount of practice, its value will be determined based on how good the shooter was to begin with, the quality of his training, and the quality of his training plan.
Within the first 10k rounds with the P30, I saw a significant jump in performance. With the exception of split times, I'm shooting the gun pretty much as well as I shot the M&P9 after almost 100,000 through them. I know from trial & error that I can pull splits just as fast, but I'm not "there" yet in terms of doing it accurately and on demand. So, that's part of what I practice on a regular basis.
Shooting 50k rounds in six months is actually harder than it sounds, especially if you don't live with a range in your backyard. If I get to the range three times every single week, that averages out to over 600 rounds per range session.
For some folks, 50k in six months would be a ridiculous waste because 500+ rounds per day is a waste. Folks who need to work on marksmanship to the exclusion of everything else more or less -- which is about 90% of the shooters I see -- will either burn out or give up and start "practicing" stuff they can't do well instead. That leads to bad habits and that's worse than not training at all.
On the other hand, someone at a high level usually benefits from pretty regular practice just to keep an edge. If I don't shoot for a month, I can definitely tell the difference. It might only take a day to get back to where I was, but what a waste of a day! The slow fundamentals don't deteriorate much -- after all, you're doing that stuff 100% at a conscious level and you don't forget how to do things right -- but the speed stuff and the manipulations definitely take a hit.
hey todd
you should send some of it up north.:D
i shoot 2-300 rds per training session. after that i find i'm just wasting ammo.
and I was happy to get a few boxes from wally world yesterday...
.
hey todd

I'd be happy to shoot some of it up north ... would make a neat entry for my weekly P30 update. Plus you guys have more ammo than I'll shoot in a lifetime. Who are you kidding?

There are ways to "fix" that, but for the majority of people it's really not important. If you're getting where you want to go with 200-300 round sessions and you can do it on a regular basis, you're so far ahead of the curve it's hardly worth worrying about the minutiae.
we might have more ammo but they won't give it to us. you have to fend for yourself. just ask our little buddy, its got worse since he left. my other job helps out with the ammo situation and that has changed also.
we might have more ammo but they won't give it to us.
Proficiency among instructors is highly overrated anyway.
You can shoot as much of my ammo as you want, man. You just have to shoot it through my P30 ...
You couldn't have horded 50000 rounds of Remington UMC FMJ--NOOOOOOOOOO instead it had to be the HST that I can't find any of to replenish my stock. Hate you :p
i'll trade ya a case of ours for a case of yours

I do believe that is 1197 cases of ammo. How many rounds in a case? Wow.
Even if its 500...598,500 rounds.
If those are 1,000 round boxes..... 1,197,000 rounds.
One man would not live long enough to ever fire 1.2 million rounds of ammo even if he started shooting full time from age 18. You can not load, eat, shit, sleep, clean the gun... fast enough to eat up all that! At least I do not think I could!

Just curious, how big is the agency and what time frame is that ammo budgeted for?
Yup. All you need to do is get past the alarm, the dog, the armed & trained wife, then move 3/4 ton of ammo out the front door without attracting the attention of any of my neighbors before they call the cops. Good luck!

1800+ member department and it's not budgeted for a certain time frame. When the inventory hits a certain level we place an order. The amount used per year varies depending on how many basic schools we run and how much practice the field instructors schedule.
JFreuler-Republic of Pineland? Are you in Fayettenam? I'm only an hour away and will gladly help you reduce your storage problems.:p
ToddG-That's just not right! You shouldn't have to care for that much ammo on your own. I'll grudgingly accept a shipment from you just to do the right thing.:D
