I have a good setup for the M1/M1A in this vehicle (vertical rack to left of steering wheel) but am looking for an equally convenient/secure system for an AR carbine. The dash is the old standard flat one. I have a substantial roll bar on the rig. The soft top never comes off and the windshield never gets folded.

Tends to make you wonder what the military is using to rack these weapons in their vehicles...

Any suggestions appreciated.

Have you checked out Big Sky? They have models that lock or some that don't. They also have mounting systems for rollbars. If you call them, they are most helpful. For our work cars we are looking at the ELS 300 because we can swap out a $20 spacer to change between MP5s, M-4's, or Shotguns.

If you send them a pic of your rifle they will make sure the rack fits around your accessories (optics, lights, etc.).

My uncle has a really nice custom one that is on the roll-bar. I like it because it is out of the way. I'll try to get a pic the next time I visit my family.

If security is a concern, Tuff-Lock and others are great choices, you can check them out at Galls or any of the other *cop shop* stores.

We've used Big Sky racks in our cruisers for years. Never had any issues with them. If they have something that suits y our needs I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Forgot to mention--I have a compact ACOG mounted on top of the A1 style carry handle. That complicates matters a little...but will still call Big Sky in the AM.

If all else fails I have a WWII vintage jeep rack for the M1.

Might be a good excuse to explore a .50 cal. mount as well.

The Humvee mounts were nothing more than an aluminium box bolted near the floor where the stock was inserted and a spring clip that captured the barrel up high, either at the dashboard or the back of the front seats, depending on where you were situated. Maybe you could fabricate something similar. Me, I'd find an aluminium toolbox that bolts/mounts under the rear seat that I could secure my toys in with a stout lock. Too many prying eyes out there and you have too tempting a theft target.

I have no experience with these guys, but their rack system seems veery interesting.

Take a look at Santa Cruz Gun Lock

I would look at the Blac-Rac. It is a key lock system with a set up for several different weapons, no electrical to deal with and it is marine grade stainless. We have several for AR-15 and 870 use. They are a solid company and you do not need to deal with Galls (who I refuse to deal with at all professionally).

I will 2nd the Santa Cruz universal gunlock. I have one in my cruiser. When the new budget goes into effect July 1, all of our cars will have them. I like the universal because it fits rifle and shotguns both. No issues with mine and I am going on 3 years of daily use.

I have to say, for personal use I think I'd look hard at that Blackrac. I definitely wouldn't mind getting one of those for my personal vehicle.
