View Full Version : Newest SBR build complete
I take it out tomorrow to some range testing out in the desert.
Noveske 12.5 Crusader Barrel
Daniel Defense 10.0 Lite Rail
Larue/Magpul UDR kit
Troy BUIS
LMT BCG
KAC Triple Tap brake.
One of the things I am most curious about is a direct comparison both with and without the KAC brake. I will be testing it against a Smith Vortex (basically no brake) and a Primary Weapons FSC556 brake.
We'll see how effective it is for $400+ clams. Im doubting its gonna be a noticeable difference but it sure is trick.

VERY nice build! I am looking forward to your range report as I am also curious to know how the PWS FSC556 and KAC brake compare to each other.
Nice build, but the brake looks a little James Bond/Goldfinger yea?

Dayum!
Serious, serious lust in my heart for that setup - a Noveske 12.5 with a KAC brake.
It will be very interesting to see your report.

Nice SBR. While I like the idea of the KAC brake I just can't justify an almost $450 price tag. Unless it can asure one-shot stopping power or eternal youth, I just can spend that much on a brake.
It sure is pretty though.............
What color is are those accessories? Very nice indeed.
That's some serious coin there, but a great end result. I too am waiting to here how the TT compares to the others.
Very nice weapon! Wish I could afford it! Is your magazine release in backwards? It looks smooth not serrated.
Is your magazine release in backwards? It looks smooth not serrated.
I think that is a bullet button, for use on a CA compliant rifle.
AAAH! Okay. I was unaware that serrations on mag releases violated the California constitution.

I didn't think that you could have an SBR in CA regardless.
doesn't look like any bullet button i've seen- they usually look just like a regular mag release, but with a hole where the mag catch should be.
i think this ones just yunikew.
Good spot.
I dont know how or why but that mag release button is smooth on both sides. It was a CMMG lower parts kit. Never seen one like that but I didnt want to buy another LPK just to get a new button.
I guess they just forgot to machine the one side.
Nice build brother. I have an almost identical setup that is my favorite upper. I can't say enough about the Noveske 12.5.

me too.
OK, so I took her out to the desert and blasted off around 500 rounds.
I wanted to start with a blank slate so I shot about 100 rounds through a plain flash hider.....my YHM.
First let me start by saying with no modesty whatsoever on my part, I build a hell of a rifle.

She runs like a top and is just so light and flickable.
The YHM obviously gave me what I was used to in a muzzle device. It was bright and sunny so no muzzle flash anyways. The recoil impulse was typical and predictable. Keeping a 5.56 on target during rapid fire isnt that hard anyways, so I really didnt expect much from the KAC brake.

Well, I was wrong.....very wrong. Was I $437.00 wrong? Thats a personal decision.
The recoild impulse was brisker....if thats a word. I didnt feel as much of the buffer spring in action. The gun felt like it got back into battery quicker. Muzzle flip was reduced greatly. I could rapid fire as fast as I could get on the trigger and shots on an 8 inch paper plate from 35-40 yards were a cinch during those mag dumps. Theres no way I would have kept my clusters as tight with a plain flash hider.
I was only able to catch one brass shot and no muzzle flash.

I caught the bolt back on this one but no brass.

The good news is that if you want the same recoil control......you dont have to spend $400 to get it.
The Primary Weapons System brake was every bit as effective for taming muzzle flip and recoil for less than 1/4 the money.

The only way I could see spending the dough on the KAC brake is if you are a KAC junkie, you were gonna get the KAC suppressor that goes with it or you have more money than brains.......I guess Im the later.
I dont regret it at all......its a trick little piece and I really like it. Just dont feel like you're missing anything if you cant pony up the ching a ling for one.
And yes, it does start to darken but this is after around 500 rounds. I think 100 rounds with the can on would blacken it completely.

Oh, before the safety nazi's come out of the woodwork, all photos were done with a tripod.....no one was in front of my muzzle. The only thing in danger was my Nikon.
Thanks for the report. And that is a nice looking rig! :)
thanks for the report. you do build a nice rifle. congrats!
awesome rifle, awesome pics

No safety Nazi's here.......we just thought you were training at Tactical Response!! :p
Very nice review. I have been toying with the idea of the PWS on my 10.5 LMT but couldn't decide. I felt it might be a little brutal on my shooting partners and I wasn't sure if it would give me a big enough advantage over the standard A2 birdcage on there now.

Nice review. The one thing I would add having been in close proximity of 11.5" and 16" rifles being fired with KAC Triple Tap Comps and PWS FSC556s is that the PWS is A LOT louder. Also the FSC556 like most comps throws up more more stuff off of the ground when firing it prone.
From a performance perspective, the PWS works awesome......very little recoil.
It could be a little punishing on shooting partners, it does have a pretty harsh concussive boom compared to the KAC.
Those are some GREAT pictures man. Good job!
I just mounted my FSC556 w/YHM threads on my LMT 12" piston MRP upper and am just waiting a form 1 and form 4 to be able to actually use it. I'm doing some more research even though I already have it and that's how I came across this thread. Good to find another review stating that I probably made a decent decision.

So basically dropping the extra coin on the KAC gets you a muzzle brake without the typical negatives inherent to muzzle brakes. Interesting, I'm impressed they pulled it off.
