I am flying back east next month and I have purchased and a Mystery Ranch 3 day Assault Pack. Could someone tell me if this pack can be used as a carry on peice of luggage and will it fit in the overhead compartment? Thanks in advance.

Great pack! I picked one up for my ten day trek around Italy this past May. If you stuff the 3 day assault pack full, I wouldn't attempt carrying it on a plane. It would be too thick to fit in an overhead bin.

Maybe if you took off the belt and didn't stuff the pack completely full it would work, but only if it fell roughly in these guidlines while packed:

General Luggage Policies

Note that when maximum size measurements are shown as a total number of inches (eg 45") this is the total of the length, width and height of the piece. There are standard sets of dimensions that go to make up these totals (for example, 22 x 14 x 9 is the standard for 45") and if you have a bag that is an unusual shape but still within the total number of inches, you may find it being rejected.

panzerr, would you mind sharing an AAR on the pack when you find the time?

I would do that for you, but I found one on the internet that is comprehensive. This is the review that helped me make the decision to go with Mystery Ranch. It is located here:

I'd like to add that I found the 3 way zipper extremely useful -you can cram the pack absolutely full, unzip it and grab something from the very bottom without disturbing your pack job. This is a great time saving feature that adds to the convenience of it. I would have loved a feature like this during the many times when I was living out of a rucksack in the Army. It is so damn handy. You can keep this ruck packed and ready to go at a moment's notice while still having access to your gear.

Are you able to lock the main compartment with pad lock(s) so that noone can get in and steal the stuff inside? How many inches in the length of the inside pocket?

Haven't flown a 3DAP. If it's helpful, I have flown an EI AIII-Large a few times, which is bigger than the 3DAP. Packed smart and cinched down, I haven't had a problem even on smaller commuter jets.

(Allegiant is the only airline I've been on in the last few years that seems to actually check and rigidly enforce carry-on sizes and weights.)
