I finally got all the parts together today to get this thing built up.....

Specs:

*Daniel Defense 16" Chrome Lined Middy 1/7 barrel

*Daniel Defense M16 BCG

*LaRue "Stealth" M4 Billet Receiver

*LaRue Low Profile Gas Block

*Troy Industries 11" TRX "Extreme" rail

*Rainier Arms "Extreme Tactical Compensator" (Beta)

*Still waiting on a Troy flip-up front sight (Should be here Sat.)

This upper was built-up to replace my similarly accessorized Noveske 14.5" SS Afghan upper. This build feels significantly lighter overall. Most of the weight savings is probably coming from the barrel and the new Troy TRX Extreme rail system, and the lack of VFG. Total weight loaded is: 9.55lb, which is about 1lb lighter than the Noveske Afghan upper it replaced, and 1lb+ heavier than my lightweight pencil barrel build.

Here's the pics:

I dont think Im going to run a VFG on this upper, as the combo of the Troy handguard, the 9 o'clock rail & the CQD front sling mount,
works out nicely as a make-shift "Handstop":

I am really impressed with the new Troy rail system. Super easy install. *Just DO NOT over torque the barrel nut!!! I screwed up the first TRX rail I received by trying to tighten the barrel nut to the next slot on the barrel nut for the gastube install, and ended up shearing the teeth off of the proprietary Troy barrel nut. On this one I used 30ft/lb exactly, which almost perfectly aligned one of the barrel nut slots with the gas tube hole in the receiver, and then gently applied a little more torque to get it perfectly aligned.

I weighed the Troy rail along with all (3) supplied rails/mounting bolts & the barrel nut, and it weighs: 13.9oz total.

As configured in the pics above with (2) rails: (1) long and (1) short: 12.5oz total.

I think this upper is gonna be one sweet shooter judging by the balance of it all, along with the Middy gas system, and the Rainier Comp.

Range report soon....

Looks good, dude. I have my eye on an 11" TRX myself...

Nice rifle. I have two of the TRX rails and ran into the same problem with the barrel nut. If you're interested they have new barrel nuts that are better hardened as well as a custom barrel nut wrench for their barrel nut. They should be shipping in a week or so.

Cool, thanks for the info. Troy still has my original one, and the new one I purchased last week appears to have the newer barrel nut. I used the DPMS multi-wrench and it worked well for this install.

Nick,

Have you tried accessorizing that carbine with lighter components to see just how light you can go?

Goodtimes, read the thread bro, he said hes waiting on a troy front.

Naaah, my lightweight duty carbine is all zeroed, and squared away, so I didnt want to monkey around with swapping parts back and forth.

I figure if I would have used the Troy 11.0 TRX rail on my lightweight build as I have it configured above in-place of the DD Lite rail, I would have saved about 2oz.

Someone mentioned it here or somewhere else...

I've never seen a more FUGLY, beaten with a 'damned since birth' stick, vomit inducing rail that seems to have the absolute minimalist, efficient, light, and applicable design.

I like that rail.

Nice!

Can the optional side rails on the TRX be placed anywhere, or do they have to go up at the front?

Very nice. I may end up putting an 11" TRX on my Noveske 12.5" upper. I'm partial to the new VTAC version.
