The reticle is visible with or without the screw-in illumination module. Insert it to illuminate the reticle in red, unscrew it and you can still use the glass-etched reticle. Meets military specs for waterproofing and durability.

When I talked to Leupold they told me the illumination module was a bettery powered LED. This review says otherwise (but it sounds like it was a prototype). Hmmmm........
