I'm in the middle of a trade deal for one of these, and I'm wondering what the general consensus is.

It is a late production model OD frame, with a Variant 1 trigger/safety. I need to have an ambi-lever installed because I'm a lefty. Should I be able to do the work myself? I've detail stripped my Glocks and I build my own ARs.

Where's the best place to get mags and parts. Specifically the new ambi-lever I'm going to need.

Thanks fellas.

When I had USP's, USP45's in particular, the safety swaps had to be done by H&K. That may have changed, I dont know.

I'm hoping that's not the case....I hate to send off a pistol that I just got. After an initial trial period, if I decide to keep I guess I'll send it off.

I noticed your use of the word "had." I'm assuming you no longer own any USPs, if so may I ask why you got rid of them?

Personally, I'm a Glock guy. Simple and effective. I've always wanted to get my hands on a USP though, so I'm going to give it a shot. Who knows....if I don't like it you can expect to see it on the EE here. :D

I like and shoot USP's very well. I shoot Sigs and Glocks better. I shoot 1911's probably the best, but only very, very, slightly better than a Glock. However, I dont like active safeties on a handgun if I can help it. Glocks and Sigs simply require keeping full magazines in them and focusing on the front sight while pressing the trigger. :D
So to answer your question, I just find that I am more comfortable and faster with Glocks.

Here is how to do it yourself:

Page 1 (http://www.streetpro.com/usp/detail/dst.html)
Page 2 (Safety lever is here, so is the detent plate if you want to switch to a V9) (http://www.streetpro.com/usp/detail/dst2.html)
Page 3 (http://www.streetpro.com/usp/detail/dst3.html)
Page 4 (Reassembly) (http://www.streetpro.com/usp/detail/rass.html)
Page 5 (Reassembly page 2) (http://www.streetpro.com/usp/detail/rass2.html)
Page 6 (Reassembly page 3) (http://www.streetpro.com/usp/detail/rass3.html)
Page 7 (Why) (http://www.streetpro.com/usp/detail/why.html)

I replaced my detent plate myself, but I don't need a ambi safety, so I never went that far.

Is HK even selling the safety levers and related parts now? Used to they wouldnt sell them.

I know they will sell some of the more simple parts. They might even sell the other parts if you have an HK smith and they are doing the work. Regardless, there are several vendors out there that sell the parts, though they can be harder to get.

The only two places I could come up with were Cal's and hkpartsonline.com

According to some folks over at hkpro.com, Cal's doesn't exactly have the best reputation.

Either way, neither place had the ambi-lever in stock. If I deem the pistol worthy to stay, then I'll probably just send it to HK for the switch.

That's the great thing with the HK. With the Var 1, once you decock you do not have to use the safety. It's the same as a Sig. Or, you can carry it cocked and locked like a 1911. Or, you can decock it and set the safety. Great platform that adapts quite well to all users. I just picked up another USPc .45 this afternoon :D

I have had a USP45 for about 6 yrs and it has had a lot of rounds and always worked.NEVER has it FTF or FTE. I could ask no more of a pistol.
