Hello, Im new to this site someone turned me on to this place off snipershide.com
Anyways I building my first SBR and cant decide what lenght barrel to use. The 10.5 or the 12.5 Noveske I plan on putting on of the new Shark QD suppressors on it whaen they are done and for a upper I have a mid length Vltor VIS.
And if you dont mind can you put why the way you voted!:D
Thanks, FM
If you are paying the tax you may as well go as short as you can...
10.5" for me.

Its a tough call. I am waiting for Noveske to make a 12.5'' N4. If I had to choose between a 10.5 N4 and a 12.5 SS I would go with the 10.5 n4. Another option, which I am considering, is getting a 14.5 N4 and cutting it down to 12.5. While I like 10.5's I prefer the added vel. the extra couple of inches gives you.
I think you should sell me your upper and find a different one. :D HAHA
j/k
If you are going to go short, go all the way down. 10.5

For a suppressed, non-duty weapon, I would go with 10.5.
For a non-suppressed duty weapon, I would go with 12.5.

What about a non-suppressed, non-duty weapon? :)

What about writing more than one barrel length on the paperwork, so that you can always switch if whatever you decide on first, just does'nt fit your needs appropriatley?
This is apparently a no-go, although it was done in the past. So far as I know, it's fine to keep a couple different length SBR uppers, so long as it goes back in the safe as what's listed on paper. If you find you like one more than the other, write a letter telling the ATF as much and switch to your new length upper.

Given that barrel shortening exponentially increases the wear and tear on an upper, I'm curious why you'd suppress a 10.5" over a 12.5".

Makes you wonder why there is anything shorter than 20" doesn't it?

I was once stuck in this dilema. So, I did what everyone advised and got both:D. You may not think so now. But about 2-3 weeks after you get your paperwork back for the one you chose, you'll be filling out the paperwork for the other. Trust me.
Be like me and get both. ;)
But seriously, the terminal ballistic advantage of those extra 2" made me vote for the 12.5".

These were my thoughts

Can we finally dispell this myth? Fill out the paperwork with whatever length you are planning on building, if you change it or add additional uppers to the lower you may do so anytime you want. The ATF only requests that you notify them if you change the barrel length permanently however you are in no way required to do so.
That said, I'm happy with my 10.5" and my 14.5" Noveskes, going with a 12.5 didn't seem like it was enough of a difference from my 14.5.
