Hi all! I'm fairly new to AR's and picked up a Noveske Recon 16.1" last week...well the other day I found another great deal on a LMT so I picked that one up for my wife - If she likes shooting it it's hers...if not I have a backup. :D
Anyways, goodies start to come in tomorrow and I need to know at what distance I should sight-in them in for home defense use. I heard 50 yards and it will be on at 200 as well - is that correct?

btw; I'll post some before and after pics once I get all the parts.

that's basically correct.. 50m zeros get you intersecting POI/POA at roughly 200m. i think it's actually a bit closer than that, and with NATO ammunition.

25m zeros gets you POA/POI intersect at roughly 300, but you have a big hold-under in between. i still prefer the 25/300 zero for a non-magnified optic weapon, as its how i've always shot and shoot it well.. but i can certainly see how an overall flatter trajectory is beneficial- and since you're new, you might as well learn it the way you're most likely gonna shoot in- inside 200m.

Thanks for the info. On my property the longest line of sight is about 100 - 150 yards, my small range in the woods is currently only setup for 25 yards but I might extend it to 50. The 2 closet shooting ranges have 200 yard lanes. It seems to make sense to sight the irons and optics in at 50 yards. I'm picking up 2000 rounds of M855 & SS109 this weekend so I will sight in with that.
How will it shoot with 55 gr ammo if it is zeroed for 62gr? Still have some 55gr ammo leftover from my mini 14...

that's gonna depend on the load.. i'm not all that up on ballistics, but i'm pretty sure SAAMI (commercial loads) 55gr will probably hit pretty dang close to 62 NATO spec ammo, which is what you're buying.

the difference between m855 and m193 is like 1" at 100m, or something like that- its WELL within minute-of-man.

In my experience there is a difference when shooting different bullet weights. The best thing to do is to shoot the M855/ SS109 and then do the same with the 55gr. as well. This is what I do.

The 50/200 yard zero is based on the 55 grain
5.56mm M193. A Bullet weight change, will affect your zero at a given distance. You can zero your weapons at the same distance, using various weights, just record each zero or, zero at 62 grain and accept marginal accuracy when changing up or down.
Congrats on your weapons sellection. Nice score.

Thanks everybody, I went with a friend who bought some Army 25/300 meter zero targets for me. I didn't want to insult him so I zeroed both rifles at 25 yards.
But I think I'll go back and zero one of them at 50 and see what I like better.

I would recommend that you also shoot at the 200 yds distance too, if possible, for fine tuning. I found that a small difference between POA, and POI at 50 yds can make a pretty big difference at 200 yds.

not trying to hijack CDH's thread, but would barrel length affect any of this?

at what point going up or down?.... i have a 11.5in with a welded and pinned FH (4.5 or 5.5in).

thanks

not to be insulting or condescending or anything, asking purely out of curiosity- but why the heck did you opt for a permed 11.5?

at the time i didn't know any better. Unfortunately in my "group" I am the trailblazer. My gun shop at the time only carried DPMS, Bushmaster, and olympic so i thought sticking with a known brand i would be ok. :o

currently, i am trying to give it a chance before i try to sell it off and start over. It has never hiccuped, but its accuracy i have issue with.

i've heard tell of permed 11.5s that were adequately accurate- but i think that extra 5.5" of air to displace as the round comes screaming out of the muz is bound to jack some shit up.

$200, a little wait for the ATF to send you your stamp, and you can take that gay 5.5 adapter off there and be even more of a trailblazer (im guessing your boys aint got no SBRs)
