Here's a video done a few years back at Blackwater. Todds good at explaining the fundamentals. For those that don't know who Todd Jarrett is, he's a USPSA Grandmaster and a hell of a nice guy. He's sponsored by Para and Blackhawk.

Thanks Rob,

I e-mailed everyone in our Dept. with the thread.

One of my supervisors was right in the middle of advising me that he didn't approve of me sending it out to everyone......when something happened that just could not have been better. One of our Chiefs came up, who didn't know what we were talking about, interupted us and thanked me for sharing that with everyone!!!!!:p

You had to have been there, I nearly soiled myself.:D

Thanks again,
G

He covers some more advanced stuff...shooting on the move, reloads, etc. Good stuff.

I have some questions about a couple of things that Todd demonstrated.

Preface: I realize that Todd is awesome and a force of nature and has done more for practical shooting than most other humans on Earth. I also know that my following comments/questions may be me "straying from my lane..."

That being said:

Is it just me or has anybody else noticed Todd covering his support hand numerous times in these videos?

Does he do it so fast that I can't see it, or does Todd not always retract his support hand to his midsection during his draw?

Thanks in advance for addressing some of these questions.

I've watched the videos and shot with Todd several times. I've never seen him 'cover' himself with the muzzle. He does rack the slide with the thumb on his support hand...............Different that what I do but none the less not unsafe. Todd is the Yoda of pistol shooting.

The two-dimensional camera can be deceptive in relation to a three-dimensional world.

Thank you for your reply.

Last but not least (and this is not particular to Todd) is there a particular advantage to the thumbs-forward grip versus say a thumbs-high grip? Also, when reloading, is anybody concerned that bringing the gun up close to the face may introduce control vulnerabilities?

Personally I find that I am able to get a MUCH more secure grip on the weapon with the thumbs-forward technique. I find that I "drive" the weapon much more naturally and manage to get the sights on target faster when I use the thumbs forward grip.

Thumbs forward helps minimize lateral movement of the weapon as well, another factor in helping with accuracy. The downside of the thumbs forward grip is that on some weapons I render the slide lock inoperative on an empty magazine. (Sigs, mainly...) A small price to pay, in my opinion, for the increased accuracy and speed I get.

As far as the reloading thing goes, Todd is showing what is called the "workstation" philosophy. Blackwater (and lots of other folks) teaches that to students. It is quicker and easier to reload when the weapon is in close to the body and it allows you to get eyes on to the most critical part of the reload, namely the insertion of the new mag into the mag-well.

Done properly, you are focused on the threat/target until the point when you are ready to insert the magazine, and then you focus on the weapon to ensure you get the new magazine in there, and then once you begin to drive the magazine into the well to seat it, you focus back on the threat. Done properly, you don't miss anything going on in front of you, but you are able to reload much more quickly, reliably, and efficiently.

I want to continue this discussion but I feel that I am about to hijack this thread, so I started a new one:

Questions Concerning Handgun Grip and Reload Techniques (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?p=68877#post68877)

John Wayne, if you could cut and paste your answer into the new thread that would be great. Mods, please feel free to modify or edit this as appropriate.

Good video. That man can freakin shoot. Everyone in my opinion needs to use that grip style. I shoot 10 times better using it.

Todd Jarrett has some great instructional pistol videos on YouTube. Does anyone know of any carbine equivalent videos posted somewhere? ;)

Army Pro Tips: CPL Travis Tomasie Speed Reloads (http://youtube.com/watch?v=StXMHw32kjA) You guys have probably seen this already but I figured it was a relevant post. He has some good tips on speed reloading which I found to be helpful.

Ive got Todd's DVD that he filmed at Blackwater and its fantastic. Mostly basic stuff but very good info none the less, and the explanation of every technique is clear and concise. Heres the link in case anyone is interested:
