a detachable magazine. What would you use if you couldn't use your standard go to rifle (AR, AK, FAL, SKS, etc.)? I'm looking for something that would be legal in most states and offers similar potential in the reliability/accuracy department. Thanks for any advice.

M1 Garand. But then.......I guess I'm showing my age;).

why not sks? just use box mag.
2nd choice is marlin 336

Within these limits I'd say the M1 Garand would be nearly unbeateable. I can't think of any other semi's that would compete.

Probably a Garand, although it is a heavy bastard.

I'd also consider an all around gun such as a Steyr Scout or something similar.

A Marlin 1895G (45-70) or 336 (30-30) fill my "PC" rifle slot.

I would probably go SKS, with the Garand being a close 2nd

A Garand and a lever action was what I was thinking. I'm just not a fan of the SKS for some reason. Thanks for the responses.

Might also want to look into a "Tanker Garand."

Garand, SKS, SMLE are probably ahead of most other options; then maybe lever action carbines in .30-30 or .44 Mag.

This is what came to mind as well. About the only issue with a Garand is you may not be able to use a lot of OTS Walmart 30-06 hunting loads as they may be too hot for the Garand.

My line of thinking too.

If I couldn't have an AR/AK/etc, I'd take my Enfield in .303 or my Winchester 94 in .30-30 as an all purpose rifle. Enfield has a detachable magazine though.

Hard to beat a Garand. 2nd would be an SKS.

How about a MAS-56? I mean the magazine clips on and near as I can tell, it has a detachable mag in the category of a Lee Enfield...NOT

Another vote for a Garand or SKS. Maybe an M1903 Springfield or Mosin Nagant, if limited to a bolt action.

Gee, the "Tanker" Garand would be hard to beat, but an SKS with the 20rnd. fixed box would be my first choice. You know, the big ugly triangle mag with the star on it. It can be easily fed with strippers and the ammo is cheap and plentiful.:)

how about a nice lever gun? or an SKS. you can actually use a clip!

I would probably go with an M1 Garand. An Lee-Enfield, SKS, or a good lever action may be a good option as well. If you want something a little different, you might want to try an FN 49. The FN 49 was the predecessor to the FN FAL and is a great rifle as well. Only problem is that spare parts may be hard to come by.

You can get a top-loaded FAL from DSA and I do have an affinity for the platform.

Of the options I have a soft-spot for a Garand.

At least some companies sell a fixed-mag "California Legal" version of rifles that normally take a detachable magazine, for instance the Czechpoint vz.58:

http://www.czechpoint-usa.com/products/vz-58-rifles/sa-vz58-california-military/

It loads from the top with the same stripper clips used with an SKS. It has the advantage of being somewhat more modern, lighter, and shorter than an SKS or a Garand, though both of those classics are also great rifles.

Now I'm not saying something like this would be my choice if I lived in another state, but I consider it a good option for somebody like myself living in CA. Perhaps something along these lines might fit your requirements.

If you are going to go down that road you might as well also consider the FN-49/SAFN too, or a Hakim/Automatgevär m/42 Ljungman or even a Rashid.

or maybe a VZ52 rifle though Ammo would be a potential problem.

I think a nice Yugoslav SKS would be a pretty good solution though.

Garands are awesome, no doubt, but you still need the clips. With an SKS, you can simply snap the rounds in, if you don't have any stripper clips. Just personal, but I'd stick with the 10-rd mag.

I don't have an SKS; I just can't warm up to them. I DO have an M1 Garand! Needs a new barrel, tho.

I would opt for my Para SKS with fixed factory 20 round mag first, follwed by my M1 garand, MAS 49/56, SVT 40, FN 49, Rasheed(egyptian hakim/sks clone) or VZ 52 later. Hakim last, just cant get use to the muzzle blast.

Go SVT 40 if you want a classic Russian WW2 semi auto....:)

Garand or SKS as well. I would also think about a Hakim, but you can take out the mag even though it was mostly reloaded with stripper clips

A Marlin 1895G (45-70) or 336 (30-30) fill my "PC" rifle slot.

I would vote for a Winchester 94 Trapper in .30-30. Add a rail and a T1, and you've got a really nice defensive carbine.

09-26-09, 22:25
A lever action is big enough to take game, small enough to clear a room. quick to keep reloaded; fire a few, slide a few into the tube as you go. Small, light, easy to pack, the lever actions are deceptive in their capabilities, no one is going to think it is a military or LE weapon and in many locales you can keep one in the back of your pick-up window without scaring the local populace or drawing any undue attention. A lever action in 30-30, .357 Magnum, or 44 Special or Magnum will definitely take on any threat and keep it down. Garands are too big for anything other than taking on 400 yard threats; you can have them.

Doesn't the Winchester have a top ejection VS. a side ejection? I seem to remember that my father in laws did. I also didn't like the feel of the action as much as my Marlin.

Win 1894 AE - Angular Ejection, since 1984. The 16" Trapper in 44MAG holds 9 Magnums in the tube, or 13 Specials.

As a Belgian I also have an original SAFN. These are really great rifles and very accurate, easy to find over here.

Like any other 30-06 battle rifles, long and heavy, but a dream to shot, very comfortable when you have the good gas setting.
