I have a colt lightweight barrel I would like to thread as well as a mak-90 in .223 and an ak-74 barrel. Can anyone recommend a good tool(s) for these? I would like something with a guide so that I start the threads off right and want something of some kind of quality.

Threads should be single point cut on a lathe.

Freakshow is 100% correct. Pay a gunsmith or a machine shop to do it right. I saw a Ruger Mark II upper that some clown had threaded by the Home Depot. The upper was bent and destroyed.

The guy I have doing it is a friend who has done it many times, and does an excellent job but does not have any tools for .223. He has stuff for 7.62x39 and some other's but of course nothing that I have.

If you feel the need to do it without a lathe...your best bet for finding an alternate tool is Brownells
