I am going to buy a Colt ar here real soon and I thought id get a 6920. Being my first AR of my own I figured a regularly configured ar would be nice. But I could get a 6940 for $138 more. It may seem like a no-brainer but for my own first ar what would you all do? Is the monolithic rail worth it? Is it made cheap? Because I didnt see a manufacturer of the rail so im guessing its colt which doesnt really have alot of experience in rail right? So whats the verdict?

I have a 6940 as my main carbine, I love the 6940. I would suggest the 6920 at this point however.

The main issue I have with the 6940 is the barrel. It uses a proprietary barrel extension. So if you ever want to switch out the barrel you are stuck getting a proprietary one.

I am thinking about selling mine and getting a 6920 with a DD rail.

Get the 6920. The 6940 is good for someone who'll never change the barrel or use a different rail etc. Too proprietary IMHO.

The 6920 gets my vote. If Colt would have extended the rail on the 6940 like DD, I'd say go for it, but in it's current configuration, it's a No Go for me.

I think the 6940 rail is a little too short, and I don't like the front site. With the 6920, you can put whatever rail you'd like on it!

I realize the shortcomings of the rail length but for an extra 136 bucks it really isnt worth it? I mean its already free floated, I wont end up changing the barrel on it probably but rather change the upper entirely. So I was just thinking that a mono rail and free float up front was worth and extra 136 dollars. Wouldnt you think I could turn around and sell it for more and go back and buy the 6920? Or would most of you still choose the 6920 upfront?

dmanflynn,

So are you asking which upper is worth more to sell second hand? Thats what I'm reading.

I have one of each and I prefer the flexibility of the 6920. I am one of those who gets my support hand pretty far out on the rail. The 6940 really doesn't suit this. The 6920 can be configured easily to suit whatever user, even if you sell it. The 6940 is what it is. I have seen some people selling the 6940 uppers as take offs and they don't really seem to be a gotta have item by buyers.

I don't plan on selling the 6940 and I will say that it is very accurate and I can regularly shoot under 1" groups, usually in the 3/4 MOA range. Think I got lucky from the factory. :)

dmanflynn,

So are you asking which upper is worth more to sell second hand? Thats what I'm reading.

No, I meant buy a 6940, sell that 6940 for a hundred more and go back and buy a 6920. I see the 6940s on gun broker going for 1500-1600. Thats not necessarily what I would do Im just bouncing ideas off you guys. But from the way things sound Ill be getting the 6920 so..... What would I be looking at paying for a solid free float hand guard/rail? The rail isn't a big necessity but the free float is.

I love my 6940. For $136 more, I would get the 6940. It has a rail, and flip down sights. I like the free float, one piece design, the whole bit. If your the kinda guy that likes to tear apart, rebuild, change ....maybe not for you. I have an LMT that fits the 6920 role though. If I did not have the LMT, I would still buy the 6940. To each his own.

If the 6940 is in a config that you like I'd say the extra hundred and change is well worth it. If not, the 6920 is where it's at.

If you like the barrel of the 6940 then buy that.
But if you think you will want to change it, buy the 6920.
Hopefully in the future Colt will come out with different barrels for the 6940,
but I do not see that happening for quite a while, if ever.

Okay, let me ask one more thing then im out. Is the free float aspect of the 6940 worth it or would it be just fine in your opinions to leave the 6920 the way it is and free float it later. Because at this point the rail is nice and all but it isnt a deal breaker by any means. I guess the free float is for me seems like but is it really worth it to consider? Truth be told Ill probably buy the 6920 and just familiarize myself more so with the platform first but I'd like this one last tid bit of input before I drop $1000+

My buddy just bought a 6940. It's nice and I really like the monolithic rail...especially after I had the rail shift on my noveske. You will most likely never shoot enough rounds to wear out your barrel, if you do - just get another colt barrel.

While I really like the monolithic upper concept, I do not like the M4 barrel with the M203 cutout.
I have a 6920 that I have changed out to a light weight barrel because I do not like the M4 barrel profile.
I ended up going with the LMT MRP monolithic upper since there are several different barrels and calibers available plus the barrel is very easy to change.

IMO Colt did good in bringing out a monolithic upper, but really missed the boat in regards to not being able to change the barrel.
If Colt ever comes out with more barrels and a wrench I will more than likely purchase one.

I don't think the FF aspect of the 6940 is worth it when you factor in the proprietary stuff like others have said.

With the 6920, you can decide what works for you at a later time. LaRue, DD, KAC, Troy...I mean it isn't like your options are going to be limited.

And if later, you do decide you still want a mono upper or SBR upper or anything else like that it isn't like a "stock" 6920 upper still won't fetch a pretty penny from some people.

Same here. I ended up getting the rifle length 16" LMT MRP. I like the long rail, it's a middie gas system, and you can change out the barrel with easy, if I wanted to change calibers.
