Finally placed my order w/ G&R today! The basic BCM Upper was in my "shopping cart" for the past week while I waited for my new Visa Debit Card (had to open new account b/c of unwanted but upcoming divorce).
Just before placing the order, I decided to look around Grants site a little and found the new hammer forged barrel upper option. Swapped it out with the basic BCM upper and placed the order soon after. Here's what I ordered:
1. BCM Middy upper w/ Hammer forged barrel.
2. Daniel Defense 9" Omega.
3. BCM complete lower w/ Magpul components INCLUDING the ACS stock.
4. 3 Magpul Pmags.
5. Specter Gear Sling.
YAY!
I can't wait!
Looks great!
Are these barrels heavier than a standard M4 profile barrel (in other words are uppers equipped with this barrel heavier than one equipped with an M$ profile barrel)?
thanks
While most are happy, I am actually a little upset. I just got three regular BCM middies and thought I was all set, and then these come along and now I am trying to figure out how to justify it. Dang.
Someone tell me that I need to just run what I have and be happy and that being bereft of this awesome forging will be OK. Someone please!!

Your BCM Middies will serve you just fine. Shoot them, enjoy them and don't worry about it.

I think they are pretty close in weight.

Grant,
What are the advantages of a cold hammer forged barrel VS a conventional BCM middy barrel? Are they stronger overall? Does a HFB last longer or have a higher round count barrel life?

I'm hoping this link helps

I think you are generally going to see more longevity out of them. How much, I cannot say.
What I tend to notice is better accuracy (inline with a lot of the SS barrels on the market).

Would love to see a spec comparison to the DD CHF barrels
any accuracy testing yet Grant?
Cant wait to see how these shoot!

If you shoot out those three barrels, then funding is not an issue for you, so I'm not sure what you're concerned about.

Well, I don't know about you, but I would say the majority of people who tread this site, love the platform and everything about the gun, and when some cool stuff comes out from a great company like BCM, then we get excited. I am fortunate though, can't complain about that.

Not yet (sorry). Super busy trying to keep up with orders.

Grant, do you think you will have all the options for these uppers ironed out and listed on the G&R site in the next month or so?
Also, do you think you will have any availible with LaRue rails?

What kind of options?
I generally do not offer any one piece FF rails for install as the BCM taper pins are pressed in by an 800 lbs Gorilla! :D
Oh and we have LT 7.0 and 9.0 Rails in stock.
C4
I was thinking the same thing Grant.
No DD Lite Rails with these? Or Larue?

Correct. You can of course buy the rail and install them yourself, but I am not doing it unless I HAVE too. ;)
Besides that the DD Omega IS one of the best rails out there.

That answers my question ;) Damn gorillas............
Do you know if the 14.5 pinned set-up will be availible in the BFH line?

Will you have time this weekend? I hope you do, as I'm interested in how these uppers will shoot.

I recently did an LT rail install for a friend on a new BCM midlength. Grant is not lying. Those taper pins took a lot of effort to remove.
The kind of thing you only want to do once, if that.

I basically go through two punches getting them out and a lot of labor.

GRANT:
Can you do me a favor and shoot a group with XM193? I'm really curious as to how these barrels will group with this round, as I have a lot of this stuff.
And do you have an ETA as to when you might be getting to the range. I'm dying here, man!
Thanks.

I broke two punches and still had to throw a little heat on the FSB of my most recent BCM middie just to get the pins out. I installed the Larue 9.0 and I love this setup, but if I plan on running a one piece FF on my next BCM I will be sending it off to have the install. There were many many many four letter comments during that install. I know why Grant would not want to do this for every FF order.
i bought the bbl and upper seperate from BCM. should be here monday...
would it be worth it to cut the bbl down to a 14.5?

IMHO, hell no. All of my current ARs are 14.5" barrels with pinned flash hiders, you really limit the flexibility of the platform (for very little gain) by having pinned muzzle devices unless you have no qualms about destroying flash hiders any time you want to reconfigure the gun. If you are intending to SBR the gun, there are much more handier configurations than 14.5" barrels. OAL of my barrels is only around 1.2" shorter than a full 16" barrel with a flash hider and since one barrel is a Noveske Afghan, I'm not exactly saving on weight.
Thanks for the reply, i've pretty much gotten the same reply from everyone else.

I agree with the above post on not cutting the barrel as I have a 14.5 with phantom perm mount... I would live to have a one peice ff and a suppressor for it but honestly I think if i am going to spend the money rework it I might as well save and buy one of these beauties... and destroy some punches and put a Larue ff on it.

The real story is the Grant has a war on his hands.
Current score is Grant 1 Ground Hogs 0 but they are undertaking flanking maneuvers as we speak.

I have 2,200 rds through mine so far and have been very pleased with it's performance.
Shot my first 3-gun match this morning and made hits on steel out to 340 yards, so I'm content with its accuracy
