Why?
there is only one "B" in barrel.
Why do YOU(if you do) abbreviate barrel as "BBL"?

Ounces = ozs.

There is no Z in ounce(s). However, because it is widely used and accepted, I use the appropriate abbreviation.

Could be convenience...

Could be it goes back to the carburetor abbreviations 4 BBL, 2 BBL...(normally what I think of)

Could be it goes back to meaning "beer barrel" or "blue barrel" in which oil was originally transported in...(I'm not gonna take credit for knowing that one lol)

Heck if we are going into absurd abbreviations.

Where is the l or the b in pound?

I cannot tell you how many times when looking up into the infinite vastness of space, pondering the self-reflective questions of mankind, that I become perplexed at the accepted truth that bbl=barrel.:D

The word "barrel" only has one "b", so why is the abbreviation for a barrel of petroleum "bbl"? In the early 1860's, when oil production began, there was no standard container for oil, so oil and petroleum products were stored and transported in barrels of all different shapes and sizes (beer barrels, fish barrels, molasses barrels, turpentine barrels, etc.). By the early 1870's, the 42-gallon barrel had been adopted as the standard for oil trade. This was 2 gallons per barrel more than the 40-gallon standard used by many other industries at the time. The extra 2 gallons was to allow for evaporation and leaking during tranport (most barrels were made of wood). Standard Oil began manufacturing 42 gallon barrels that were blue to be used for transporting petroleum. The use of a blue barrel, abbreviated "bbl", guaranteed a buyer that this was a 42-gallon barrel.

Pound, from the Latin, Libra as in scales or Lb for short. Not sure about ounce. The abbreviation is probably either Latin or Greek in its source, hence the lack of direct "translation" in English.
