Hey guys as you can see this is my first post here, im really anxious to buy a new AR so im trying to do my research. Anyways to my topic, i have a gun that i inherited from my grandfather and im pretty sure its an M1A1 of some sort but ive been searching and have never seen a pic of one that looked the same. Can you anyone give me any info about it? Thanks.

That appears to be an M1 carbine with a custom-made, and I use that term with some reluctance, Mannlicher stock. I was unaware that a scope mount existed for the M1 carbine, so at least I learned that.

ETA - I would imagine the scope mount replaces the rear peep sight and is a B-Square device?

There should be plenty of M1 carbine references on the web and in bookstores.

Thanks for your help. I can take a close up of the scope mount if anyone wants. I really wouldnt know how to explain in to you experts, i just shoot em lol. No but really im trying to learn more. Ive found an abundance of info on the m1 in general i had just never seen one that looked like this one.
Thanks again

I would love to see a close up of the scope mount one of the front sight would be nice as well. Looks like quite a bit of work went into that rig.
Something about that stock says Fajen and Tru-Oil.
Thanks

I hope these are good enough picks to give you some info. the only thing i could find written anywhere on the gun (without disassembly) is "s&k" on the skope mount. Im kinda afraid to take the gun apart with out a manual or even really knowing what is under the "skin"

one more thing. Is the M1 even really considered an assault rife? If so how good is it really? i know it probably wont hold a candle to an AK or an AR but ild just like to know if its a pretty decent gun. I have not even gotten the chance to fire it yet. I have a couple 30rd magazines for it and a whole bunch of other smaller capacity spares.

She's a little beauty!

These guy's http://www.surplusrifleforum.com have a 30 Carbine section.

As far as your rifle goes, I would try to find out all I could about it. Someone went to a lot of trouble customizing it. Is there a family story that goes with it?

Yeah i recon im gonna join that forum too so i can try and get some info. My grandfather died last year... he had alzheimers (sp?) so the only real time when i really knew him i was a little boy so there was really never a point in my life to where i could have found out about all of his guns. He always kept them out of sight and truthfully i didnt even know he had any guns until i was about 16 i think. He kept to himself as far as his hobbies went so my grandmother realy has no idea about any info about any of the guns. I wish that someone in the family knew something but thats why i had to turn to the internet. lol
