View Full Version : Car-BEAN or Carb-EYE-N? (How do YOU say it?)
I've got a history of mispronouncing words that I've only read, often to the great amusement of those around me. So, when I see Carbine, I pronounce it as carb-eye-n. However, after watching AOTTC, everyone seems to refer to is as car-bean.
So, this got me to wondering, how does everyone ELSE say the word?
(And if I'm the only one saying it like that, you can feel free to point and laugh at me)
-Adam
Either. From Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary:
* Main Entry: car·bine
* Pronunciation: \ˈkär-ˌbēn, -ˌbīn\
* Function: noun
* Etymology: French carabine, from Middle French carabin carabineer
* Date: 1592
1 : a short-barreled lightweight firearm originally used by cavalry
2 : a light short-barreled repeating rifle that is used as a supplementary military arm or for hunting in dense brush
I've caught myself saying it both ways, but usually it's "bean".
if everyone around me is saying bean, i'll just trip over my tongue and end up spitting out something like "carbyeeayen"
but i say carBINE.
seems to be an east/west coast thing, as well as a north/south thing. EVERYONE from the SE says "bean," most folks from the east coast in general seem to say "bean," whereas over here on the left-coast, almost everyone says "bine."
it is really aggrivating to hear people say it differently, and for such a long time, often-used world. if everyone could agree to say it one way or the other, i'd go with it either way.
I always say bean. Ralphie said carbyne with a thing that tells time.
I interchangably pronounce Carribean and Caramel in both of the usual ways to pronounce either of those words.

So do you say six, seven, eight, nean?
Or nine? It isn't that hard to work it out.
M_P
I personally say bean

What about wolverine? It is pronounced rhyming with bean rather than nine.
Edited to add many more 'ine' words that I would be shocked to hear spoken rhyming with nine:
Celine, Christine, Cuisine, Latrine, Machine, Marine, Routine, Saline, Vaccine, Figurine, Tambourine, Tangerine, Trampoline
Not saying all 'ine' words should rhyme with bean, obviously.
Rather, my point is that there are many examples going both ways. Language can be a tricky bastard like that ;)

Bean.
People who say Bi...ne or Beyene, are probably the same people who say "swooord" when they should say "sord":)

I refuse to allow facts and logic to influence my opinion.

Car-bean.
Although I say "route" as "rowt recon" and "root 66". Go figure.
I say both. Probably "bean" more when combined with another word, ie "carbean class" but bine when alone, though that is not hard and fast.
Maybe I am screwed up as I have lived about 1/2 my life in Arizona and Utah, and 1/2 in New England (Mass NH).
I really can't believe I just wasted 3 minutes of my life on this...:rolleyes:

So, OP- does all this answer your question?

LOL!!
Put me in the "car-bean" camp as well.
By the way, I always viewed it as "car- bean" in American English and "car-bine" in British English, for some reason.
Bean here, but I wasn't raised all uppity. :p It has always seemed to me like a class separation. Bine in the lecture hall and bean in the trenches.
Same as tech, in America we use routers and in England they use rooters.
