I am waiting for my SBR paperwork to come back and I was wondering if there are any reputable companies that can cut down a 16 inch m4 profile barrel to 10.5"?
Thanks

ADCO

I agree, and can vouch for ADCO's exceptional work. They attention to detail and speed which they execute the work more than justify the price. I have them cut my 16" LMT to 14.5", re-thread and re-crown, add the M4 "contour", and repark.
It came out perfect and I have noted improved accuracy with this barrel after the work.

I've used ADCO before and they are a very good company, i didn't know they cut barrels down in length though. Thanks, I'll give em a call on Monday.
What kind of price do they charge to do this to a barrel?
Depends on what you have done.
Go to their website and go thru the shop services section.
Add what you want to the cart and it will tell you how much.

About one year ago I had my barrel work done. I exhausted all reasonable efforts to contact Randall and get a quote for the work compared to ADCO. He would not return e-mails nor any other attempts at contact. I got the impression from his website he wanted new customers to simply mail their barrels in with an order form and payment without any prior contact. Not a great way to do business if you ask me. Also I have heard he has outrageous lead times, ie months. I gave up and went to ADCO. I had the barrel back 10 days back after I sent it out, and the work was outstanding.
Adco rapidly does exceptional work for a very reasonable price.
One of the few places where you can have "all three".
ADCO a week turn around on pinning my colt 14.5 with a extended fh.
I am another very happy ADCO customer. They do excellent work and have a very quick turn around time.
ADCO, quick turnaround, professional operation, no BS.
Another +1 for adco. Ive had them cut 4 barrels for me. Fast service and excellent craftsmanship each time.
wouldn't any competent gunsmith with a good reputation who build rifles from scratch (benchrest / custom hunting) with a lathe, milling machine, etc be able to cut / thread and crown an AR bbl??
Not trying to be a wise guy, but custom chambering / cutting and threading barrels are done by 1st class smiths daily for all types of weapons. I had my Anschutz 54 sporter cut and threaded for my tac67 while I waited from a retired gunsmith/buddy.
I guess my question would be, Is there something special about cutting an M4 profile bbl that an AR specialist is needed??
I will say the turn around time and recommendations from adco sound excellent & also know finding a trusted gunsmith locally can be quite the challenge.

My guess is that cutting a chrome lined barrel is different than cutting a SS or unlined chrome moly barrel due to the problem you get with chipping the lining.

The chrome in a barrel is nothing like the chrome on a bumper.
If you go to the ADCO site and go the the FAQ section you will see.
Q. Are there any issues cutting chrome lined barrels?
A. Not in our experience after cutting several thousand.

You would think any good gunsmith could do it.
But after messing around with several yahoos in my area that came highly recommended on local gun boards.
I found out that ADCO will do it cheaper, better and faster.
Even with the shipping time included the entire time frame was less than half that of doing it locally.

This is what it boils down to.

That is certainly a plus and why I would consider adco if /when I needed the service....my assumption is that the lining was not an issue or I would have seen it somewhere on the gunsmithing forum (from the smiths I know are top notch.) I just don't think it(chrome lining) would be that brittle or we would hear of more flaking / chipping in general.

Wouldn't there be gas port size issues when cutting a 16" carbine down to a 10.5" length?
Adco opens the gas ports appropriately.
There are no issues with the hard chrome in a barrel flaking, it is a completely different process than decorative chrome on a car bumper.
The chrome in a barrel is nothing like the chrome on a bumper.

Shucks, if I had seen that Id have bought a centurion barrel to cut down vs a WOA stainless barrel.
