Hi I have been lurking here for a while and just recently picked up a colt 6920.
The area right under the ejection port / dust cover is not finished the same as the rest of the rifle it is also a little ruff to the touch as compared to the rest of the rifle. I am assuming this is a blemish. I am sure it is fine and will not affect the gun in any way but would just like a few other opinions. The upper to lower fit is also a little sloppy but not as sloppy as my BCM middy mated to a LMT lower.
I have a few hundred rounds through it with out any problems it runs great just a little annoyed about the finish

Normal and this area can be much worse.

I have seen much worse. Won't hurt the rifle.
But I don't fall into the fit and finish crowd. Nice rifle!
I just got a 6920 last week, it does not have this, its smooth and
the finish is the same as the upper/lower. I did notice that in certain
lighting the dustcover is a different shade of black.
It's called character. It lets those around you know you actually shoot your rifle.
This is normal wear and tear. Nothing to be concerned about.

Very normal for Colt for the last couple of years.
It doesn't effect function whatsoever.
If one wants a M4 for 'show and not go' I suggest something other than a Colt.

Thanks everybody for the great info.
I tried doing some searches and looked for some other images of 6920’s but I did not find anything that looked like mine.
I bought the Colt to be my go to AR so I was not too concerned about the finish. I sort of expected a loose upper to lower fit (The other two I checked out at the shop where also loose ) But the finish had me had me wondering a little.

Are you really upset that the dust cover isn't the same color as the upper receiver? I can't imagine what you would do if the lower didn't match the upper perfectly.

I still am not sure what we are looking at here. Does the rifle shoot OK?
Is it a newer Colt? Do you want to sell it?
The OP was asking if the machining marks on the upper receiver just below the ejection port are normal. He has no malfunctions or anything.

Hey, the bottom line is: "It's still a 6920." That blemish won't hurt a thing, other than in a beauty contest. You still have one of the best "out of the box" ARs on the market today.
Consult the comparison chart for clarification...
There is an inhererent beauty in a weapon that you can bet your life on.
