Drug companies are actually wasting time and money on this, http://www.latisse.com, when they could be doing something productive. Drug companies complain about the time and money it takes to get approved, which makes all drugs expensive, yet they waste time and money on this.

The only reason I know it exists is because they now have commercials for it, and from what I saw it did nothing.

The drug was actually developed to control the progression of glaucoma. What it does is increase the outflow of fluid from the eye therefore reducing intraocular pressure.

The eyelash thing was unexpected and now they are marketing it solely as an eyelash enhancer.

So they didn't really waste time developing an eyelash drug. They just figured it would sell better like that.

I heard this from my sister.

Perna:
What happens typically is that a drug will be developed for one application, and then in testing, it will be seen that it has other effects that could be marketed. Great examples of this are Viagra (was developed to treat pulmonary hypertension), and Rogaine (treat hypertension).

Latisse was originally developed to treat glaucoma, and was approved as Lumigan in 2001.

So, the drug manufacturer has MOST of the cost already amortized out over the initial approval testing, and just has to redo a very small amount for the new labeling. This means it's not a huge cost to them.

I can live with that, makes sense. I dont know how drug testing works, but are they actually measuring all body hair whenever they test a drug?

Perna:
What they do is they just noted common adverse reactions in patients using the drug as originally intended (glaucoma). Then, when a large portion noted the eyelash growing effects, they filed that away, and started looking at it more exclusively.

Generally speaking, they do NOT measure whole body hair growth, unless that is the intended use of the agent. In the case of Rogaine (Minoxidil), the ADR they noted was hirsutism (hair growing...well...everywhere). Pharmacists started compouding it in a topical form, and then the manufacturer formally put it up to be tested as such, figuring if it could grow hair everywhere if taken orally, that regrowing hair on one's scalp would be reasonable to assume if delivered just to that location.

Well since the eyelash growth is not anything that you would notice, since the time progressed video of the eyelashes growing was not very impressive. Just seems weird that in drug trial that someone actually noticed that "everyone's eyelashes look FABULOUS!". Just like no one would notice that people had less ear hair, or their eyebrows seemed sharper.

And when it burns away all the fat and people turn into zombies.......... Which I think something like could happen.

There are good side effects as well as negative side effects, and they can make money off good side effects.
