Anyone have experience with the Colt 6940? May be purchasing a rifle today and just starting looking at the 6940 as opposed to the 6920. Like the idea of not necessarily having to replace the front handguard to get a free floating barrel. Can't seem to find if it has M4 feed ramps, barrel is chrome lined. Anyone with info. on these?

It's the same exact barrel, flash hider, BCG and CH as a 6920.
The upper receiver and rail are integral and the FSB is different.
What I don't like about it is you'll need a Colt wrench to ever remove the barrel and as far as I know Colt hasn't released the wrench yet.

I own a 6920 and a 6940 both are chrome lined and have M4 feed ramps. The only thing I don't care for on the 6940 is the short rail. My 6920 has a 10" DD Lite rail on it and I like that length better. Switching between the two, I find that my hand ends up touching the the hot barrel/FSB on the 6940. I wish the 6940 was a mid length.

If I already didn't have a 6920 I would buy the 6940. The integrated rail is nice since most people buy rails for their Ar15's anyways. I never use my rails for anything other than a flashlight :D But the option is always nice to have if I plan on adding more stuff.

There's just something wrong with this thread, but I can't put my finger on it. What could it be? :p

If Colt had been able to make the 6940 with an MRE/FSP style 12" rail, I can't imagine a better rifle. Well, actually I can:

6940 with monolithic 12" upper, front sight cut-out, folding front sight (mounted to BARREL!)
Colt-Canada CHF barrel
KAC SR-15 E3 Bolt and Ambidextrous lower receiver
All FDE finish.

^ That's my ultimate gun right there!

The included BUIS is junk. I have used them as issued in the military and the "popsicle stick" breaks fairly easily. A minor issue as I am sure most people would replace it anyway. I prefer a GG&G BUIS.

Like Eddie Murphy said, "Ha Ha, Very funny Mo**** F*****.":p That's astute of you to pick up on that. Wish I had. I already have the 6933, was looking to add second Colt. Went with the 6920. Can I now be 6933:6920? Needed a second for carbine classes in case one goes down and spare parts don't solve the issue.

Figured a 6920 with some additions would be superior to the 6940 based on the design of the 6940.

I really love my 6940. Slapped a Eotech XPS on top and really dont worry about the iron's. The rail is awesome and you will probably just add one to the 6920 anyways. I have both and again, 6940 is the way to go. ;)

IMO out of the two choices I would have made the same call you did and gone with the 6920. I've tried to warm up to the 6940 but I just can't. I don't like the rails at all and the BUIS is for shit. Asthetics aside, it is a good rifle. Just not anything that has a place in my safe.

A 6920 is a blank canvas with which you can do many great things.

Like mine, like the rail, like the free float, like the front sight. Can change the rear sight very easily. The rail is plenty long for me, people often say the dont like it, so they buy a different gun. It works for me. I have a light and a V grip on mine.

It is an awesome gun, go for it. All you need is an LMT SOPMOD and start shooting.

St Judas-That clip is one of my all time favorites. Haven't seen it in years but always remembered it. Thanks for the laugh.:D I urge everyone to spend a couple of minutes watching the video. Still pissed I didn't catch the irony of the initial post.

The only reason I chose a 6920 over the 6940 is the lack of ability to swap out barrels. Even if you came up with a special barrel wrench, the 6940 barrel extension is a new design so other stanard AR barrels will not work.

I did hear a rumor that Colt is coming out with a 14.5" and 11.5" barrel models of the 6940.

As I too have a 6940, and agree that the lollipop BUIS is crap, what would any of you guys replace it with? Arms, GG&G etc. My range master loved the 6940 but basically said to toss the rear sight, "it will bend or break when you least expect it". Soo, any suggestions?;)

Sorry to derail for a bit to the OP.

I replaced mine with an ARMS 40 first day and then soon after swapped that out for a troy. They are great guns. I have thought about switching mine out for a DD or 6920, but every time I do I end up sticking with the 6940.

I love my 6940. Only additions I would add over the SureFire light, Tango Down VFG, Aimpoint T1 with Larue mount, Tango Down rear QD and Daniel Defense front QD attachment with BFG VCAS sling, BCM Gunfighter CH and MIAD grip would be Troy rear BUIS, a Magpul B.A.D. and a Vltor EMod stock (as and when finances allow). Changing out the barrel isn't a concern for me (Colt can do that) and the rail is long enough for me. I prefer the 6940 to the 6920 for my use.
