For the first time as long as I can remember, Colt has released complete upper for sale in the commercial market. This is a monumental step on colt's part as to their commitment to the Civilian market.

Available for purchase are Colt LE 6940CK and LE6920CK, the CK part of the part number denotes this as an upper assembly only.

There is no what so ever difference between the complete rifle or the upper assembly. CK might stand for Component Knockdown.

I recently picked up a Colt LE6940 for my California registered Colt lower.

Interestingly, my lower has a small pivot pin hole and mate to the mil-spec small pivot pin of the Colt upper perfectly. Another step for Colt is to merge the mil-spec aspect of the Colt defense guns to the commercial market offers.

The silver tab below the rail are the detent for the lower rail take down catch.

Not something you can do with your finger unless you have the finger of a small child, but a simple as a bullet tip will do the job just fine.

Gov't profile 16.1inch M4 barrel, unlike the LMT MRP, the Colt 6940 will take a standard mil-spec barrel. with the right tool, you can actually drop a 10.5inch barrel into the platform and make it into a modern CQB-R

The 16.1inch M4 barrel are standard mil-spec affair, chrome lined, M4 feed ramp, MP tested, and 1:7 twist to best fit ammunition from 55gr to 77gr.

Cast flip up front sight gas block

Notice the hole opening, this was originally design for the model 1020 piston carbine, which was reveal during the 2006 Shot show. Although the piston is still an in house project and the engineering team took the basic 1020 design and came up with the LE6940. the hole is mostly likely left for the piston assembly in case for a future release. few CNC steps and this can be a piston ready gas block.

The front sight kept the usual M16 front sight blade profile.

The detent for the flip up front sight are friction lock with no extra button to push for deployment. This sight has a pretty heavy spring detent so it will not be easily knock down during deployment.

Like the Colt LE6940 carbine, the LE6940CK comes with the US Army approved Matech rear sight.

Bolt carrier group are the proper M16 affair, this give the gun better felt recoil and timing even during semi auto fire.

I drop the LE6940CK right on top of my California Registered COlt AR15 HBAR lower. added the components below
LMT SOPMOD stock with Colt buffer tube and H2 buffer
MidWest Ind. SPLP rear BUIS
ADM EOTech quick release Riser
EOTech XPS-3
Surefire M900 Scout with the latest 120 Lumen TIR lamp assembly
TangoDown QD vertical grip
TangoDown BG16 pistol grip
TangoDown rail panels

This will effectively become my primary carbine for the foreseeable future replacing my LMT MRP CQB.

Compare to my LMT MRP, so far the gun feels lighter, thus point from target to target faster, the lower to upper are nice and tight, and the balance is superb. I plan on attending the Surefire Low light carbine operator course this weekend with Bill Murphy and will give this gun a good test.

My new Colt LE6940CK compare to my ole trusty LMT MRP CQB.

I saw one of these (complete rifle) in a store yesterday and was impressed. Looks like good build quality.

I like my LE6940, if I had the funds I'd purchase a second one.

I only wish the the sling attachments were at the rear of the rail and that the front sight locked in place. I would also like to see the version with the standard A-post front sight (model #?). Still, if I were in the market for a Colt upper I would certainly not hesistate getting one of these!

Nice pics as always SMGLee. Thanks for posting!

I have had one and got rid of it, went back to a standard LE6920 with a Daniel Defense rail system. When I found out that you needed a special tool to remove the barrel and that the barrel extension was exclusive to this model.

I liked the system and looks of it, but I wish Colt would have offered something more like LMT's MRP with a easy swap barrel.

Any other place selling the 6920 upper aside from SAW?

No experience with the company but Fidelis sells a lot of Colt stuff, and the prices are in line with everyone else.

However with the price of 6920's these days it would make more economical sense to buy a complete rifle and then sell the lower off.

No worse than a KAC URX with the special and PRICEY tools.

Id like one with a 14.5" barrel. Cannot stand 16" m4 profile barrels for some reason. A 14.5" with standard FSB would be ever better.
