View Full Version : Colt M240 machine guns?
From Defenselink:
Colt Defense, LLC., West Hartford, Conn., was awarded on Sept. 25, 2009 a $32,143,048 firm-fixed-price contract for M240B machine guns. Work is to be performed in Hartford, Conn., with an estimated completion date of Oct. 31, 2015. Bid solicitation was open to the Firms in the U.S. and Canada with two bids received. TACOM-RI, CCTA-AR-SA, Rock Island, Ill., is the contracting activity (W56HZV-09-D-0175).
Haven't these always been made by FN?
My guess is that some paper pusher made a mistake. I could be wrong.
The Ones I have been around was FN.

As were all of my "Golfs."
If FN can can get a contract to make M16s for the US Military, then perhaps Colt can get one to make M240s for them as well... This will be quite a coup if turns out to be factual...

The last I heard was that Colt had bid on and won a contract to build replacement barrels for the M240 coax guns.
.
So they are just doing barrels for the Charlie models?

Above is the original solicitation. I don't know if the NSN translates into a complete weapon or just the barrel.
That NSN is for machine gun 7.62 MM with a unit price $6,000 ea from DLA
Never seen a Colt 240 before...interesting

I'm sure it'll look a lot like a FN 240 just with Colt markings
Who knows maybe they might put a little colt spin on it...Much like the HK and their M249.

Great, just what we need, a 240 with different size and offset takedown pins.
I checked that NSN against my TM and it comes back to the M240B machine gun. The barrel NSN is 1005-01-044-1026.

On a side note: We pushed 51 of the new M240L "Titanium" guns out this month.
.
Interesting. A "L" would have been great during training at the Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport.
The weird thing is that the award appears to be coming out of TACOM-Warren, not TACOM-Rock Island. It wasn't on the Warren ProcNet site yesterday, but most notice postings are generally a few days behind.
TACOM has been trying to open up solicitations for issue small arms in order to build up the small arms industrial base. It is entirely possible that we'll see a General Dynamics or Colt M249 someday.

A call from a co-work just a few minutes ago confirmed that Colt will be building complete M240's.
I've got no other details at this time.

Someone in Hartford is saying "So you want to try and take our M4 contract away eh??? Just like you did with the M16??? Well take that in your pipe and smoke it..."

PS: Score one for the Lieberman / Dodd team...

The politicos had nothing to do with it. Hopefully that will change.
Take a look at the recent contract awards to Colt; M240B spare barrels (best price award), M16A4 (best price award), and now the M240. Bids for the M249 spare barrels were do last Wednesday too. The Hartford team is playing offense.
