View Full Version : Empire State Building seeing red

My blood has been boiling for the last two days because the Empire State Building was lit up in red and gold colors tonight to commemorate/celebrate Communist China's 60th anniversary. Are these people kidding me?This is the direction our country is heading in?Whats next, celebrating North Koreas birthday as well? In my eyes, this is a sad day ( one of many lately ) for our once great nation.

It's probably owned by China...

Is it getting time to take things that belong to us back?
Push till the people have had enough.

This shows me that some of the leaders of this "Once Great Nation" support inhumane treatment to their fellow humans.

But I bet someone from China would be offended if we lit it up in red, white, and blue on the 4th.

Shit lik this just makes me sad. This is not the country my grandfather wanted to leave me. Some of the bullshit I see makes me glad he is not here to endure it.

Well until any of you go through your own house and throw out EVERYTHING that was made in China you really have no room to bitch about it. Just think about how much money you personally contributed to China.

Not by choice as I buy American any chance I can, even if I pay a premium.

Just because we trade with them doesn't mean we have to celebrate their holiday, but then I forgot that this is the great melting pot.

10-01-09, 02:29
Who says you have to celebrate the holiday? It is a free country, dont celebrate it. Im confused why you care or are outraged about what lights are on a privately owned building?

SWATcop556
10-01-09, 02:39
I guess I just don't like display of support for communist countries and dictators, but maybe I'm in the minority.

perna
10-01-09, 02:55
Well that is the price you have to pay by living here, you might have to witness people celebrating something you are against, but since you are not in NY you dont even have to witness it.

SWATcop556
10-01-09, 04:20
As the OP stated it was lit that way as a celebration of the communist government in China. I don't support or celebrate anything communist and the fact that a nationally recognized symbol of New York and this country is made to display celebration of that IMHO is bullshit. Does China light up their temples in red, white, and blue to celebate with us on the 4th? I think not.

You are correct. My eyes will not be offended by having to gaze at it, but it doesn't make me support, like, or agree with it. There are plenty of things I don't have to see to know I would feel and be offended or even down right disgusted by. My location really has nothing to do with it.

I just think that things like this show the continual degredation of our country and what it was suppose to stand for.

Ask a soldier over seas if they would be offended by the display of communist China colors on a national symbol to celebrate their communist government. Keeping in mind that they will probably not see it either. I doubt you would get a lot of support.

And no one asked you to defend it. I'd rather fall on this side of the fence than yours but that's my right being an American, just as it's yours to defend an un-American display from a "privately owned building."

I'm not surprised. This country is about political correctness, especially with the Democrats in control of this country. This country is powered by capitalism and the owners of the Empire State Building is probably doing this to attract tourists from China. For those who are unhappy with this, you have a right to boycott this by not going to the Empire State Building or buying any related mechandise. To keep in perspective, it's the government not the people.

I can't believe I'm seeing someone on this forum not take offense to this. Maybe a re-reading of how the Chinese Communists came to power is in order or just this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiananmen_Square_protests_of_1989).

I am not surprised given two years ago they lit green to honor those celebrating a muslim holiday.

I find it almost difficult to believe that someone could be so ignorant of history that they would give in to Chinese pressure to white-wash their past. 30-40 million people died in the so-called "Great Leap Forward". Another 3-4 million died in the "Cultural Revolution." Mao Zedung is in contention with Hitler and Stalin for the title of Most Murderous Human Being EVER. And they are CELEBRATING his rise to power?

.

they do.

the empire state building is lit up in all sorts of various colors...

They have honored many countries. For example, it lights red, white and blue for both the fourth of july and Bastille day. It lights red, white and green on Columbus day, red and white for Pulaski day, blue and white for both the Greeks and the Israelis, green for St. Patrick's day, etc.

not defending it, just sayin...

So we have fought and are fighting for democracy and freedom of the human race, thousands of our citizens have died for this principle, it is what our country stands for and here we are lighting up an American icon such as the Empire State building with the colors of yellow and red celebrating the communist takeover of china.

This is beyond all reason.

as someone else pointed out..."we" are not doing anything. its a privately owned building and they can light it however they choose to. "we" have fought for their freedom to be able to do so.

i don't like it any more than any of you, but being that its a privately owned building not much can be done about it. if it was a government building, i'd really be pissed about it. thankfully we haven't reached that low yet...yet.

Yep, it's like celebrating the Enabling Act.

Having some generic Chinese celebration, like Chinese New Year, is not problem at all, in my view, but this is ridiculous.

And the band played on...

Seriously of all the things to get upset about: war in the middle east, health care reform, Iranian nukes, economic catastrophe (or any number of other issues) you'd think this would rank right up there with navel lint.

Was it stupid? Yes, but stupid isn't against the law. All this accomplishes is distracting Americans for the real problems we face.

Build a bridge, get over it. Nothing one can do about it now and there are better uses of one's time and energy.

And I'm just as opinionated about those topics as well. You are right in that "stupid" isn't against the law otherwise we would all be locked up at some point.

I do feel that a display to celebrate the rise of communism, public or private, is horrible. Regardless if it is my "right" to do so. It is also my "right" to be disgusted and talk about it.

A display that celebrates communism? How many people saw the lights and had a clue? Of all the shitty things going on, outrage over this is a bit misplaced imo.

In a country that often can't name its Vice-President, I bet 99% of people had no freakin clue what "red and gold" meant (I'd bet more people thought of the 49ers)...until the outrage gave the Chinese more publicity than they could have hoped for otherwise.

One runs into people on a daily basis that would make one's head explode if one let them meanwhile the news media pulls those strings and makes everyone dance about on an otherwise ridiculously slow news day.

If you're all happy with the tune, by all means don't let me keep you from tapping your feet.

I never said stop bitching about anything, I just pointed out the facts that it is a privately owned building and no one asked you to support or celebrate anything. On a forum where most want the government to stay out of their business, they will quickly jump up to remove rights from someone else if they dont agree with it.

Just to set the record straight, I dont support china or communism.

Well until any of you go through your own house and throw out EVERYTHING that was made in China you really have no room to bitch about it.

In any case, I just read every post in this thread over again, and with one arguable and minor exception, there were no calls for anyone to remove any rights from anyone. There were plenty of people who think it sucks what they are doing, but I haven't seen anyone say that their right to light their building whatever color they want should be removed.

You need to learn to comprehend the difference between saying that you think something is stupid and saying that the government should stop that stupid something from being done.

There isn't any quickly jumping "up to remove rights from someone else" they don't agree with. Sorry.

No wonder you allow yourself to be distracted by nonsense.

LOL, "distracted" from what exactly?

Bringing Netanyahu and Abbas together for drinks, guiding sensible health care reform through Congress, staring down Ahmadinejad, auditing and reforming the Fed?

Maybe I'm just a little more capable than you thought!

I can call "celebrating" the genesis of a regime that killed 70 million people a disturbing and stupid activity in my sleep.

Maybe it takes a lot of emotional and intellectual capital for you, who knows?

Both would probably have about the same level of ultimate effectiveness.

But it's fun to be the snarky little iconoclast, isn't it?

i agree, both are a waste of time. but the government selling our country to China we can actually do something about. vote, write your congressman, hell run for office!

You're assuming I've done none of those things?

and as for this:

but the government selling our country to China we can actually do something about.

I'm all ears, please offer your solutions!

How is it trivial to minimize the overt public recognition of an event that led to the death of millions and is the antithesis of everything this country stands for?

Why would anyone need to ask this question?

That's just it, I've never given you anywhere near that much thought at all.

It appears that you have some insecurities that you've chosen to project onto me.

I hope that it works out for you.

The point made was that how many people are getting themselves in a twist over this, do more to support the communist regime by shopping at Walmart than shining silly lights on the Empire State Building.

It's completely unserious to ridicule the the light display while simultaneously supporting the regime by buying cheap chinese goods.

That there are so many other SERIOUS issues we have to address as a nation, getting wound up over this is more than a little trivial.

Well that explains a lot.

No wonder you allow yourself to be distracted by nonsense.

I don't think you realize how arrogant you seem.

But that's OK, I'm just trying to help.

OH BS.

So if we stop shopping at Walmart, the Chicom empire will just crumple and die? Is it that simple? Or like RickRock, do we just need to vote, send letters, and run for office?

That'll change the world, right?

Let me ask, instead of posting, commenting, and making subtle judgments about the news of the day, just what should we do, directly and specifically, that would "address" these SERIOUS issues?

Or, better, what are YOU doing that gives you even a little justification for walking in here and telling all of these people that their opinions on this current event are silly and frivolous?

You know I have tremendous respect for you and your base of knowledge. But to compare folks shopping at Walmart for mostly necessities at a discount, during a brutal recession, to the now internationally displayed celebration of the institution of communism in China is just way beyond a stretch.

As they say far too often on the new ESPN pre-game show..."Come on, man".

It's enough that I can go to sleep peacefully tonight, knowing Gutshot John is working, quietly, diligently, FORCEFULLY, behind the scenes, working to address the SERIOUS issues of the day.

I, for one, am suitably chastened, for my lack of seriousness.

I'm not comparing them. I'm simply pointing out an inconsistency.

I've nothing to against people who shop at Walmart during a recession, but that shopping pattern does more to support the communist dictatorship than shining a bunch of silly lights. Add to this the billions of dollars in personal and public debt that Chinese banks have provided American consumers and government. "The last capitalist we hang will be the one who sold us the rope." The communists even told you what they're going to do and now the rope is made in China.

This media manufactured outrage is a pose without any substance. If people want to stop this dictatorship than stop supporting it with their wallets and support of deeply flawed economic policies that predate the current administration by decades.

If they wish to continue shopping at Walmart that's their choice but I find it at least a little hypocritical to simultaneously get outraged over this. If you don't well then that's your prerogative but I don't think it's really a stretch to realize that there is an inconsistency here.

Yes it does. The situation is certainly imperfect.

What does a company's decision about what they want to celebrate have to do with the direction the country is going in? I see this comment thrown around frequently and seems to suggest that the actions of a few somehow manifests the will or direction of the country. When they light the building up in red, white, and blue next 4th of July, will that mean that we're heading back in the right direction? Our once great nation? Did I miss the memo that informed us all that this great nation of ours no longer exists? Should I assume the President will subsequently be fingered for having a role in this? Collectively a lot of people in this country need to get a ****ing grip.
