I'm wanting a 9mm are for fun shooting/training.

Who makes a quality 9mm upper reciever?

Does anyone make one that takes Glock magazines?

What problems are most commonly encountered with 9mm ARs?

thanks

Well I'm no SME, however I do have a RRA 9mm upper that runs fine. The price was right, the ammo saving is a big plus and the gun handles like a regular AR for all the skills & drills stuff. Some folks are going to go with a Colt gun, and thats fine. I run a STAG lower with a dedicated Hahn block. I decided to have a "dedicated" lower for the 9mm just because I didn't want to switch out the block everytime..No complaints with the RRA product or the Hahn block as well.Everything else is a straight AR add on. Hope this helps. BTW C-products mags run well, both the 20's and the 30's. If you're in a hi cap prohib state then "pre-ban" colt mags can get expensive. Gunbroker is always your friend.

I would be glad to give you my suggestions. I have a Colt 9mm rifle. It was for sale one day at a local gunshop many years ago. I saw it, and had to have it. This is after the ban in 94. It did not have a bayonet lug, but had the A2 bird cage hider. I thought i don't need a lug. It came with 2 20 round colt mags. Originally it had a full A2 stock, but I had that changed by the dealer to an older carbine stock. It is all original. I live in MD which is pretty un-friendly to gun owners. I did my wait, and while I was doing that I plugged in Colt 32 9mm magazines into the search engine. This is before the MD ban on anything over 20 rds. I hit the jackpot, this guy was selling his stockpile of 32 round magazines and his full auto Colt set up. He had 30 mags, I wanted them all, but could not afford it - prices high. So, I ended up with true Colt magazines for my rifle.

My Colt has the block permanently installed by special pins. My rifle is only 9mm. You cannot remove it. If you get a 9mm rifle there are many ways that they can be done. Blocks, etc..sometime they do not stay in place really well. You can also use 32 round Uzi magazines that are modified to function. Cheaper than Colt magazines. I have never had a malfunction with the rifle, with many rounds down the barrel. Magtech, Horandy, Winchester, Federal, and many other brands.

If you want one, get one. I think you will be pleased. If you have a lower you can modify it to function with a block/ejector, and possibly a new hammer. I think it is advisable to have the 9mm hammer, but someone else knows for sure.

Now I am getting into the 5.56 area of AR's. I have my lower, now I just have to save for my upper and parts. That is the difficult part - waiting.

I wouldn't get the pistol lower, but the rifle lower instead.

I personally run a Rock River upper, with a VY Hy-Tech detachable block which take unmodified uzi mags (I can find them for around 11 dollars each). It works great, but the mage release is on the left side of the block.

dcs, I use the same magwell block based on reviews i read here a while back. I used a stripped Stag lower, Emod stock, and a RRA upper. It took 13 months for the upper to show up - while I'm in Iraq of course. I had dropped my lower off with my smith and asked him to get it running when it came in. He reports that it shoots like an SOB. I hope that means great.

The Hytech block fits almost perfectly in the lower with no wiggle room. The release will take a little getting used to, I assume, but it shouldnt be a big deal. And Uzi mags are plentiful and not very expensive at all.

There are several threads here about them, although with the limited search function and character limit they can be hard to find.

They can require some tweaking to get running right, may recoil more than a 5.56 (both of mine do, I wasn't expecting that) and offer limited benefit in a training application. But they can be "fun", suppress well, look cool, etc. Also if you have a need for a sub-10" barrel I think the 9mm is better suited.

I have two. One is a factory Colt 6540 16" barrel and the other is an Anvil Arms/RRA "factory" SBR. You can read a lot more about my take on each here (http://tacticalyellowvisor.net/8301/100421.html).

At this point I'm basically hanging on to the Colt until I get enough cast-off parts to put on the RRA and make it the equivalent of this gun in 5.56 (http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q111/rob_s/gun%20stuff/DSC_3943.jpg). One area where the RRA is always going to suffer is weight as the barrel is heavy as hell. I may wind up having it turned down to a lighter profile (http://adcofirearms.com/shopservices/shop_.cfm?code=21). Here's how far I've come on the RRA so far.
