I have purchased a m44 mosin nagant, worked fine for a while, replaced the stock ( i dont think that has anything to do with it) and it still worked fine, fit fine. But a 10 or so rounds after i put this new stock on it the bolt handle became so hard to open i had to wedge on butt on ground and slap it open. However, if you fired a round, pulled the firing pin back (cocked it) the bolt would click open like usual:confused: Common problem? Easily fixed? Help?

bump. Someone out there has to have had this problem too. And while I cant imaging why it would, Im not about to have a bolt blow through my eye socket for lack of knowledge on the malfunction

You're not the only one to have this problem - my squad leader says this happens to him as well. I just have no idea why it would happen. Or any experience with these rifles.

I wonder if the stock is binding the ejector?

Remove the bolt and see if you can push the ejector flush with the reciever.

"Sticky bolt syndrome" is very common in Mosins.

The most common cause is dried cosmoline in the chamber area and locking lug area. Some folks have good luck with spraying a solvent into the chamber and then chucking a 20 gauge brush in a drill and polishing out the chamber. I have had good luck using carberator cleaner and a chamber brush.

Once the chamber is clean, if it is still sticky, the problem may be with a burr on the extractor.

Good luck. :)

Welcome to the Mosin Nagant, this is a known problem.

Check out line 21 of the comparison chart ;)

Oh so true for most but the problem im having is worse than just stiff. I dont shoot it anymore its so bad. I almost CANT get enough leverage to cycle the bolt when its not cocked. However when its cocked it chinks open with my index finger

if it opens fine once you cock it I'd say it has to have something to do with the camming mechanism that cocks the bolt. It only happens when you live fire ammo and it happens with all ammo you try right?

Email or call Kivaari about it. He's one of the good Mosin guys out there.

I checked for burs on the extractor, chambers clean, used pb blaster to get the cosmoline off. It does this whenever, no matter what as long as its not cocked, when its cocked it easy goin. I just took the bolt apart and put it back together just to check and when I put it back in I could lift the bolt no prob, however after working the bolt in puzzlement, it got harder and harder to open:confused: I dont get it.... Ill email that guy and see what he can advise. Will update if solved

Mosin Nagants are awesome weapons, fun as hell to shoot, but also dirty as hell. make sure you spray solvent in the action every other time you shoot. it should fix your problem. i have heard others say alot about Warm soapy water but meh. . .

I cut a couple of coils off of the firing pin spring on my mosin. It made it easier to open the action (because the mosins cock during opening). That firing pin was so strong it could pierce a rhinos skull! It still works 100%, and the spring is still probably twice as strong as it needs to be.

Your situation sounds different though, if it was working perfect prior to stock install. let us know if you fix it.

Yep, even if it looks clean its not. Once you start shooting the chamber gets hot and the cosmo starts to melt and get sticky.

What I do is take the barreled action out of the stock and use a heat gun on the chamber, once its scorching hot I begin to clean it. I use chamber brushes and solvent.

Just get a drill and a 20 gage bore brush like everyone is saying.

I bet you shoot steel case or laquer coated ammo.
Steel doesn't expand as fast as brass and alot more fouling gets in the chamber.
Whats happening is that the fouling is trapping the case in the chamber which seems like the bolt is harder to pull back.

Just clean the chamber every so often and you won't have any problems.
