Hey guys!

The wife and I are headed to Vegas for the 1st time on Thursday! We'll be there 3 nights, coming home on Sunday.

I won the trip through a work promo, so we'll be staying at the Venetian. Wanted to ask those who have been there before, what are the must see's and do's while we are there?

I've been told we must go to Fremont St., we'll walk the strip too. Try to decide where for dinner. Thinking of one of Mario Batali's, Bobby Flay's, Emeril's, or Wolfgang Puck's places. Suggestions?

I saw where you can go to The Gun Store on East Tropicana and rent full auto AK's, M249's, etc. Might be fun?

Anyway, suggest on!

The Venetian is very cool because they have a ceiling that looks like a surreal sky. Go to the Palms and get a tattoo at the tattoo parlor on the casino floor.

Fremont St. is great if you are not a great/experienced gambler, the casinos there have lots of $1/$2 tables to warm up on before the strip casinos rob you blind ;) Also great to see the huge neon display above the street on Fremont, the light show runs every 30 mins after 9PM as I recall. Also be sure to hit Binion's on Fremont, you can get your picture taken with $1 million in cash (in crisp $100 bills, under 2" thick plexiglass...I thought it was cool to see).

As for food in Vegas, I've found the Emeril's/Puck's-type restaurants are a bit "cookie-cutter", and always leave a bit to be desired. Tao is a good restaurant right there in Venetian, and Luxor's new steak restaurant Tender is pretty awesome (but pricey). I've heard good things about the Bobby Flay place, but never been there to tell you firsthand. If you're in the mood for a great buffet, check out the one in Mandalay Bay for dinner. Great service, and for only about $25/person all the filet mignon you can eat :)

The Gun Store looks like great fun, but be sure you call and ask about pricing before you go. I stopped in before, but I just wasn't able to justify spending that much for an hour of blasting!

My last tip- sign up for the "player's club" in every casino you'll be spending money in, those comp points add up fast, and many casinos give away freebies for joining (hats, shirts, free slot play, etc.)

Have a blast!

I travel quite a bit for a living and have been to Vegas prob 10 times in the past 8 years. Here's what I have enjoyed while being there (I'm sure the locals will have great suggestions as well):

1) Visit the shops in Caesars Palace
2) Ride the BIG SHOT on top of the stratosphere (at night and take off your shoes)
3) Watch the fountains in front of the Bellagio. Wander around the Bellagio too-nice!.
4) If you're going up and down the strip a bunch, utilize the Tram. It goes up and down the strip on the west side BEHIND the casinos. It goes from MGM (southern most point) to the convention center (northern most point) I think.
5) See the Ciruqe show, "KA" at MGM. The water cirque show at the Bellagio is okay too, but "KA" blew me away and I absolutely HATE plays and that kind of crap-AMAZING STUFF!!!!
6) Blue Man group is okay. Hard to describe but I would be giving it away if I did. Don't blow a whole lot of money on this show.
7) Take a tour of the Hoover Dam (go early)
8) Haven't seen the inside, but I hear the Wynn hotel is very nice.
9) There are a few good gun shops near the strip, take a gander:)
10) People watch. Crazy drivers, weirdly dressed people, couples fighting (:D)

Have fun! I am starting to get tired of it but 2-3 days there is perfect!

Just got back from a conference there a few hours ago. Saw a few shows: KA at MGM (dinner at Wolfgang Puck - excellent crab cakes, way more crab than cake), La Reve at the Wynn (dinner at Stratta before the show), both excellent. Mystere at Treasure Island is also a favorite.

If you like ice cream, you have to check out The Gelato at Bellagio.

For KA I used Tix4Less, located on the strip in front of Planet Hollywood (and a couple of other locations). Saved 40%, but the PITA factor is pretty high. They open at 10AM, so you wait in line, then get a voucher for a ticket. Then you have to go to the venue and wait in line when the box office opens (typically noon) and then exchange your voucher to get your seats. For the other show I had the concierge at our hotel get me tickets. The "special" was Premium seats for "splash zone" price + free popcorn. Not anywhere near 40% off, but it only took 15 minutes.

FWIW things were pretty quiet on the strip. No where near the crowds that I have seen on previous trips.

1. Sure, if you want.
2. Not if you want it to break down and leave you stuck up there for a day. Definitely go to the top of the Stratosphere just to see the view, be careful though, starting to get into a bad area around the Stratosphere. There's other high spots where you can see similar views at Paris, Mandalay Bay, etc.
3. Sure, they're cool.
4. Goes from MGM to the Sahara, there's a stop around the back side of the Venetian, I believe. Not really sure if its a great deal or not.
5/6. See whatever show you like, as long as its not Zumanity at NYNY. If you're at the Venetian, I'm sure you could get a deal on Blue Man.
7. If you want, but you're gonna kill a whole day, and you only have 3.
8. I work there. It is.
9. Don't waste your time with the gun shops, mostly a bunch of know-it-all assholes. The machine guns at the Gun Store on Tropicana are cool though. Kinda busy on the weekends.
10. Whatever.

There's plenty of deals on restaurants etc. right now, ask the hotel concierge, they can help you out with that stuff. Oh yeah, and tip.

Red Square is a Vodka bar in Mandalay Bay. Real cold war feel to the place, kinda cool.

Rum Jungle is a pretty cool spot too. It's also in Mandalay Bay.

The first thing I always do is go to In n Out Burgers. I grew up in So. Cal and would kill a man for a Double Double. I joking asked the girl at the rental car counter where they were and she handed be a pre-marked map. A big +1 on people (freak) watching.

I think the Deuce is a better "deal" than the tram ($2 a trip vs $8), day passes on the Deuce are less expensive as well. The tram is less crowded. The walk from the tram which runs behind the parking garages at most of the properties will give you a great opportunity to walk even more than you already will just going from property to property. Both will allow you to avoid the hawkers waving the nudie cards in your face while you walk along the strip (very annoying when you are with your significant other).

I don't get this. Tried them and I wasn't impressed, definitely not impressed enough to sit behind 10 cars in the drivethru for. Speaking of burgers, Cafe Lux at the Venetian has good ones, used to go there after work when I worked at Tao. Burger Bar at Mandalay is good too, go for the American Kobe burger.

These are all good. I can (and have) stand and watch the water show at the Bellagio for hours by myself. I've been to Vegas several times (3 in one year) and one time while my wife was at a photo shoot I stood in front of it for hours. I had my cell phone for internet and music between the shows so I was content to just chill and watch.

Another thing I would suggest is to check out the Prince Tribute band. I think it's at the New York New York now since they blew up the Boardwalk which is where I used to see them. It's hard to explain but I'm not even a Prince fan but this show is really entertaining. It's free (at least it was at The Boardwalk) and is one of the better shows you will see in Vegas. If you are a fan of Prince I'm sure it will be even more entertaining.

My wife and I got married there too and the day of our wedding I rode the Big Shot on top of the Stratosphere. I'm SO aftraid of heights AND amusement park rides so how my buddies got me on there we'll never know. Needless to say, my wife (who loves these sorts of things and can't even convince me to go on them) was pissed off when she found out I went on it w/o her... during the cab ride on the way over to the chapel for our wedding. Man, what a great weekend that was.

Lots of good food, lots of good buffets and many good drinks to be had. Enjoy!

Never spend more than burger prices for a 'kobe burger' as it defeats the purpose entirely and those who know their red meat know what I'm talking about.

In N Out and Fatburger are both incredible. If you go to In N Out Burger do yourself a favor and familiar yourself with the secret menu before going so you know how to order. If you get a Fatburger be sure to add an egg to it... It's glorious!

There used to be some really good buffets but it's gotten hit and miss lately. Some that used to be good aren't what they used to be and some that never were very good are now starting to be decent. If you like sea good you must hit up the buffet at the Rio.

The kobe burger at Burger Bar is 2 bucks more than the regular burger. American Kobe is kinda a falsehood, because the only real Kobe comes from Japan. I like Fatburger, but I've seen the secret menu for In and Out, still not impressed. I don't understand the concept of putting thousand island dressing on a burger, but that's just me. As for buffets, the only one I've been to is at the Bellagio, which was great. The one at the Wynn is good, I'm told, but I don't want to be at work anymore than I have to.

Rider has some very valid points and I say this as a local as well. Honestly, it comes down to how old you and your wife are? When will you be here? What are your interests? Gambling, night clubs, shopping, nature stuff, do you drink? What's your budget?
Give me an idea of those things and I'll throw you a ton of info on what I would suggest... kinda hard to make recommendations without knowing those things otherwise I'd say rent a Ferrari 430 Spyder for your 3 days here and have a blast!
And if my boat hasn't sold by then I'll take you on the non-tourist side of the dam... pretty neat perspective that alot of people don't get to see.

The last time I was in Vegas was for a bachelor party a few years back. We were all fired up to rent/shoot full auto's until we saw the price. We opted to spend our money at the nudie bar instead. My dollars went much further there. :D

We arrive this Thursday the 8th and leave Sunday the 11th. We are 31 and 32, no kids with us, we drink (not like fish, but socially), we will get some comany comps on food and a little free spending money (mainly to cover meals), we'll gamble but aren't gamblers, enough to say we did it. I wish the sky was the limit but we ave two small children and the Holidays are coming up.

The shops at Ceasars are a definate as is the fountain at the Bellagio and Fremont St.

I checked the prices at the Gun Store on Tropicana. WOW! $60 for 40 rds through a SAW. $25 for 20rnds through a pistol, 10 rds for $25 through a Semi AR, G3, G36,etc; $50 for 50 rnds through and of several SMG's or $50 for 25 rnds through a FA AK, M16. I think I might pass.

Thanks for the ideas so far! Keep em coming!

They have packages over there now, like a WW2 package that lets you shoot a Thompson, a Grease Gun and a MP40, I think. You get more rounds for your buck I guess.

My info's from July '07, so it may be a bit out of date on some things.

The Venetian's a good place to stay, I really enjoyed it. I also liked the lighting better than some other casinos (like the ones that have harsher blueish/greenish lighting on the inside). Clean, but I have heard that there is/was a large amount of theft at the Venetian by the cleaning staff, so be careful. They didn't take anything of mine, but all I had in the way of expensive stuff was a shitty laptop...

Oh, and you may or may not know it, but DON'T touch the minibar stuff. They've got sensors on everything.

The stripper card hawkers...you can tell the nicer casinos/hotels versus the cheaper ones...the nicer ones run the hawkers off. The Venetian had a guard at the access point for the elevators to the room, and you had to show your room key to get pass. I'm sure any of ya'll could find a way to get past, but it kept most of the casual riffraff from passing. I did see him block a few hookers from going up to the room. The shops at the Venetian were crowded, and the gondola rides fill up quickly.

I think the Phantom of the Opera is still showing at the Venetian- it was pretty decent, and I'm not a play kind of guy.

Visit the Hoover Dam, for sure. Other stuff, I don't know- I only spent four days and didn't get to do what I wanted as I was with another group at the time and couldn't really break away (taking care of my handicapped grandfather).

We didn't eat at buffets, we at mainly at the Lux at the Venetian, IIRC. I'm the kind of guy who's more than satisfied with a decent cheeseburger, so I'm no cuisine expert.

If you want to get out for a day; Rent a car (you can usually do so at the casino/hotel), hit Hover as suggested, head over to Valley Of Fire (absolutely stunning), and circle back to Red Rock Canyon for sunset.

You can make it all in a day if you eat an early big buffet breakfast, don't linger too long at the dam, and don't take any long hikes in Valley of fire. Red Rock Canyon in the eve. has you back to Vegas for diner and gambling :)

Now we have a much better idea on what to recommend... It was 70 degrees today so it's a good time to come be a tourist walking around right now on the strip.

A "super secret Vegas local insider" thing to check out is http://www.spyonvegas.com/openbar/ ;) There is no catch, no BS and lots of eye candy. I know you're married, so am I, but you will see smokin' hot girls everywhere here so I hope yours isn't insecure. The Spyon parties are fun, typically early 30's crowd and booze & beer is FREE! Whatever liquor company is sponsoring the event that night i.e. Grey Goose, Corona, etc. all the drinks made with GG or Corona beer would be free. There is no cover, no drama and it's a good way to do happy hour to start out your evening and save a few bucks...

If your lady likes dancing I would recommend Tao or Pure as those are the ones most of our visitors like to go to, I go maybe once a year so I'm not a good club guide.
I think the Hard Rock is one of the better places to go to mingle, gamble & sight see. No where else, that I know of, do they have pole dancers in the middle of the casino to gawk at while you're sipping & gambling :D

I would recommend going to Red Rock National Park, about 30 minuites away, over Hoover Dam any day of the week since you're rather limited on time. Beautiful scenery for pictures and you get away from the strip for a few hours to hike, bike, horse back, etc.

Caesars is fun to walk around in and check out all the fancy stuff, the Venetian has expanded their shopping area as well. Bellagio fountains are a great thing to take the wifey too, she'll love it! Food wise I'd recommend Olives at Bellagio (Todd English) and Mesa at Caesars (Bobby Flay) for celebrity chef fare. A bonus would be sitting outside Olives on their patio watching the fountains over dinner, she'll really like you then ;) A 5 minute drive away from your hotel is Firefly and they specialize in Spanish Tapas dining, highly recommended and very reasonable price wise! The sangria is excellent as well...

Umm... go to The Hotel on the south end of the strip connected to Mandalay Bay before 10 pm and you can go up to the club on the top floor for free to have a drink and hang out... definitely one of the best views of the strip and you get in free before 10 if you want to stay to dance.

Personally I would NOT recommend going to Fremont St. Outside of the casinos the area is run down, full of drug addicts, hookers, low lifes and scum bags, but that's just my opinion :) The light show is entertaining for approximately 2 minutes and it's a pain in the ass to get down there unless you're going for cheap gambling and to hang out for quite a while I definitely wouldn't go.

Are you renting a car? What kind of music do you like? If you want other recommendations feel free to ask, I'm full of useless information :D

I think Firefly moved down to Fremont Street recently, or they opened a 2nd location there. The only reason I'd recommend going to Fremont is to see old school Vegas, but I'll second your opinion that there's alot of dirtbags down in that area. Same for the view from the Stratosphere. I'd recommend seeing a similar view from Ghostbar at the Palms, Mix at Mandalay, or the Eiffel Tower at Paris. Its alot safer.

Irish
10-05-09, 18:24
The new Firefly is a 2nd location, never been to it yet and will probably stick with the original.

Lots of people like downtown/old Vegas/Fremont St. but I think it's mostly vagrants, cheap hookers, crack heads and really old people wasting their social security checks...

Blue Martini has a good happy hour and Cadillac Ranch too, both are in the same shopping center on the south end of the Strip... the aquarium at Mandalay Bay is pretty neat too.

Go get your picture taken by the Las Vegas sign at the south end of the Strip! Always a classic picture to show the friends & relatives...

I would suggest the following, in no particular order

Binon's for breakfast, try the eggs benedict with prime rib instead of ham.
Ethyl Ms has their factory ( or at least they did the last time I was there) and a cactus garden.
The Imperial Hotel had a car museum with some very nice cars, may be gone.
Zoomanity at NYNY was a real trip if you like a semi nude revue, very good acrobats, try to get a love seat if you can hack the bucks.
Dinner in the Eiffel Tower is to die for, the most expensive meal I have every eaten and an experience to be enjoyed. It requires reservations and casual business dress, but worth the view of the sun going down over the mountains, the lights on the strip and the water show at the Bellaigo.
DO NOT I repeat DO NOT ride in any of the cabs, we went twice and the last time my wife almost broke my finger hanging on because the driver was friggin nuts. He was Bagdad driver nuts... no way will I ride in a cab there again.

But most of all enjoy the town, it is a trip to watch the tourists and the locals compete to see who can be the most gonzo

Another Vegas Local's opinion here...

if you're gambling/hanging out on the Strip I recommend either the Hard Rock or the Palms. Regardless of where you go Strip gambling is only fruitful if you have a lot of capitol. Us locals usually don't gamble on the Strip.

Someone mentioned the Burger Bar at Mandalay... it's a good call. In-And-Out burgers are good but not on the same level as the gourmet burgers you can get here. Another place to get a good burger is at Bradley Ogden's at Caeser's. You can only order it at the bar and it's a bit pricey but it's one of the best I've ever had.

Checkout the Peppermill Diner (across from where the Stardust used to be)... it's a trip!

Most of my favorite Strip restaurants are in the Forum Shops at Caesers. Good places to eat inside the Forum Shops that I've tried are: The Palm Steakhouse, Spagos, Joe's Stone Crab, Bradley Ogden, Il Mulino. Rao and Mesa Grill are ok too.

Emeril's Del Monaco in the Venetian wasn't that great... the real one in New Orleans was soo much better.

The water fountains at the Belagio are amazing. The Belagio is fun to walk around but I wouldn't spend your money there. The same goes with the Venetian (and the Palazzo), although I do like the food at the Canaletto. The Wynn is pretty much the same vibe as the Belagio. Fashion Show is fun place for retail shopping. I would recommend eating at Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba if you like Spanish style Tapas (and a very cool view of the Strip if you eat outside.

The Rhino is still the best strip club in town.

Hoover Dam is very cool, a must see if you have time... it's about an hour away from the Strip.

I would skip Fremont St.

I would definitely skip the Gun Store. It's a tourist trap.

Valley of Fire is cool but kinda far. Go if you have time. You'll need a car.

Oh, and the Lobster Bisque at Le Provencal in the Paris is awesome! The pizza is quite good too and the wait staff sings songs here and there as you eat. Good stuff and not too spendy either.

Right next to the M&M store is a little place called "Half Price Tickets". We go there every time we go to Vegas and get the unsold tickets for that days show for cheap cheap cheap! We went and saw 3 shows last time where we would have only been able to see one at full price. It's kinda limited if they shows are selling well but sometimes you get lucky.

Also, try this fun game. Whenever my wife and I are playing Blackjack, win or lose, we give a big "Whoo Hooo!!!" after every hand. Pretty soon, you'll have the funnest damn table in the whole casino.

That was the other thing I was going to post when I posted about the Lobster Bisque just above. We knew we wanted to see the Body Exhibit as well as a couple other things the last time we were out so we went there and told them what all we wanted and paid for the tickets there and saved a boat load of money. They have specials on shows and meals and all sorts of entertainment and you can get some really good deals there.

Hmm, 3 days in Vegas? Mandalay and Bellagio has killer gourmet buffets. Tommy's is my favorite off strip burger, second is Red Robin. Start your free tourista goob show gazing in the evening starting at the Big Show in the Wynn (spend some money there to feed my paycheck :D), walk accross the bridge to T.I. for the pirate show, go south to the Mirage for the volcanoes, and then top it off with the fountains at Bellagio. Le Reve, Mystere, Blue Man, O, Ka, etc. See a show. If you're a rocker, you gotta see "Rockstar The Tribute" at the Harmon Theatre in Planet Hollywood. Veloce Cibo at the new M Resort has a killer view from the south end of the strip. Downtown "Old Vegas" has too many feral critters around for my taste, but many cheapie deals abound. Most of all, have fun and be safe!

dont make eye contact with the people handing out the pornography flyers on the strip, lol. They will bug the crap outta you. The roller coaster at New York New York looks fun, but when I went a couple years ago(1st and only time) it was too windy so we couldnt ride it.

Good suggestions, but the M is probably too far to go without a rental car. Are the volcanos back on at Mirage? I thought they were still renovating. What do you do at the Wynn?

Also, try this fun game. Whenever my wife and I are playing Blackjack, win or lose, we give a big "Whoo Hooo!!!" after every hand. Pretty soon, you'll have the funnest damn table in the whole casino.

And that's why I don't play blackjack on the Strip.

Party pooper! :D There's plenty of tables... Mine will be the one where people at least have fun giving their money to the house. Right about the time where I'm good enough or lucky enough to actually WIN, I'll put my serious pants on. Deal? :p

Sure. :) But when you have a guy on the table who's in a grand or so, stuff like that gets annoying. I don't play like I used to, but when I play its usually off strip and in the off hours when I can play by myself. I pick an amount I want to get to, when I hit it, I walk, regardless of where I am in the deck or shoe. And if I lose what I sat down with, I walk, no trips to the ATM.

I rode it once due to being coerced by a buddy of mine who was visiting... I do NOT recommend it!

In fact when we were out there about 4.5 years ago it was off limits. The story was that someone fell out and died but I'm not real sure I'm buying it. Pretty sure that would have made national news if it actually happened and sounds more like urban legend. Either way, I wasn't about to argue to get them to let me ride it that's for sure. :D

You'd be surprised the amount of stuff that happens on the strip that has a very brief news cycle, if any at all.

Agree on the Peppermill, and The Artisan is cool too, though a little out of the way.

Yes sir. There is a vested interest in making Vegas appear safe. For example, if you open carry on the Strip you are in for a ride, irrespective of legality.

Lots of good recommendations on here already, but if you get sick of "Vegas" and like old pinball machines and pre-video-video games then go here. A great way to recharge without wasting lots of $$$. You need a car although if you have to take a Taxi at least you saved while you were there!

If you like Cajun/Creole seafood then definitely go here.

If you really like seafood, and lots of it, then this is the place. Even impressed my girlfriends family from Cape Cod.

The Titanic Artifact exhibit at the Luxor is pretty cool as well.

I really like the Venetian and the standard rooms are some of the best in Vegas. Just hanging out there and seeing their St. Marks square is good times too. The Wax museum is kinda neat and better than I would have thought.

I like the atmosphere at Paris as well. I also say you should hit Fremont St. at night just too experience it and hit some of the cheap old school feeling casinos, but definitely spend some time there. Maybe have dinner at this old school slighty cheesy but with incredible service and food.

I was there in June on my honeymoon.

Fountain show at the Bellagio. The night show is a must see with the lights and music. There were also street performers out and interesting to watch.

New York , New York. Just walk around and check the place out.

If I was visiting soon Id visit the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop.

If you're planning on going there, you may as well check out Fremont, because you're almost there anyway.
