Been lurking through the big forums for awhile and find I like and respect the member input here the best. Thanks for education and I'm looking forward to learning more!

I'm in the process of modifying a standard Bushmaster Patrolman carbine (flattop) for reliable defense and training while I save my nickels for a BCM-based middy. For my Bushy I'll add a proper BCG as a ready spare (BCM or LMT), staking on the castle nut, a "cheap" red dot for practice until I can afford an Aimpoint, etc.

I also plan to add a Vickers combat sling. I've tried searching past forums but can't seem to find a definitive understanding of how I'll attach it to my Bushy. Is it as simple as threading through the existing sling loops (which makes me a bonehead)? Or do I need to be looking at QD hardware, new receiver endplate, etc, to make best use of the Vickers? If so, can you help me understand specifically what I need?

Thanks, all!

Thanks, Brian... had found other youtube vids on using the Vickers gear but not these two for installing.

Anyone use the universal wire loop? I'm inclined to trust Larry Vickers' recommendation but still suspicious that it'll slide forward at just the wrong moment if under hard use.

Also, I have the Bushmaster M4 stock, so A2 adapter isn't applicable and I don't have a QD point. The bushy stock has one horizontal slot under the ribbing at the back. Is this where I'd loop a Vickers sling? Is there enough tail to get around the tube? It appears so from the vids but would rather hear first-hand confirmation.

Yes you can loop it through there, that is where I like mine when I run a 2pt sling, or you can get a mount like this if you want to use the QD http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Midwest-Industries-MCTAR-10-p/mctar-10.htm. I am going to pickup a Vickers and try the setup the guy did in the second video. I have not used the loop, but it appears secure, if you want to be 100% sure then you would want to use a sling mount, and since it sounds like you dont have a railed handguard you can get something like this http://www.gggaz.com/index.php?id=203&parents=38,48 http://www.del-ton.com/ARMS_Sling_Adapter_p/as1009.htm

not a response to your sling question, per se....but i suggest skipping the el-cheapo RDS. just work with your irons till you got the AP money saved. you'll build valuable skill with the irons, and really excel once you get a proper RDS on there

I highly second this! You will truly be wasting money that could go towards an aimpoint RDS in the future. Even if you buy a cheap ass RDS for only $50, that's still money you should be putting back for the aimpoint. Trust us, you will NOT regret holding off purchasing an RDS until you can afford a quality one. Like theJanitor said, use your irons and get proficient with them until you can afford the AP.

Paul

Thanks for the links, Brian. Some great options for the sling. You're right I don't have rails, and since I don't I've always been a little leery of the A-frame mount for a sling, but don't really have a reason other than it "seems" like it'd put a lot of stress on the FSB. Is this my imagination?

Paul, theJanitor... good advice. I shoot a lot and am very fond of iron sights but you guys might have tipped me back to saving the el cheapo money for the Aimpoint. My dad picked up a $30 Tasco RDS for his Stag and thinks it's the cat's ass for how little he paid. I figured what the heck since I can blow $30 at McD's for the kids (I have 5), but maybe I'll just borrow his instead!
