View Full Version : What handgun stopped your search??

Okay - If you have been around long at all you know I have sort of been on a search for the perfect EDC handgun. What I found was that there isnt a perfect one out there!! There all a compromise in one way or another.

I am a big 1911 fan and wanted to have that be my prefered platform and it still is in many ways but not one I want to carry daily. Here is the main reason and I hope its not too frivolouse..........

We all have a busy lifestyle these days and with 2 kids and a wife and making knives and holding down a full time job, I dont have the time to breakdown and clean my guns like I want to. I make the effort but thats time I could be spending shooting more or doing something else. I may get flamed for that one but I want my gun time to be USING them

I still have 3 1911's and I shoot them the best at a slower rate but my prefered carry guns these days are Glock 26 and 19.

I have learned the glock angle and actually prefer it in alot of ways!! Basically ball your fist up and point at what you want to hit, reach over and cradle that hand with the support hand and BAM!! Thats the Glock grip angle We have been pointing since before we could talk. That has to be hardwired in us somewhere!!!

The reason Glock VS M&P and blah bla bla is that you can replace EVERY part of a Glock YOURSELF, cheaper than most platforms and doing so isnt a pain if you havent been trained to work on them but have the energy to do some reasearch. That along side the ease and overabundance of aftermarket parts make this my prefered platform of daily carry and ease of use. I have basically vested in Glock at this point to look elsewhere or the M&P would have my attention if it werent for sending it off to replace extractor or remove sights to detail strip the slide but those 2 things are really a small problem in the big picture.

I cant say I wont be toating my 1911's EVER but I can honestly say that the G26 and G19 combo has made me stop my search I begain about 2 years ago once I stop and add up all the +'s VS the -"s.

Sure, I have snubbies for that slip in pocket situation and love the .45 1911 but the G26/G19 combo really has all I NEED in a daily setup.

Whew..........Good morning guys :D

Well, my problem is an interesting one.

The HK45 has stopped my search; however, I am now searching for the money to acquire said item.

Life's a bitch.

for CC HK45C - after going through about 9 different handguns (Glock / Sig / HK) I replaced my HK USP45C with it and have never been happier.

The G19. But I can't give all the credit to the handgun. Instead I received some excellent advice from someone that finally made me realize what I needed was practice, practice, practice and not a new handgun.

So, the G19 was the first handgun where I realized it was me that was the poor shooter and not the gun.

Sounds simple I know but for years I didn't have anyone to tell me, honestly, what I needed.

For me it was my Glock 26. I did a backstrap reduction and a stippling job on the frame. I also added the Ghost 3.5# trigger connector, Trijicon NS, and Pearce 2733 grip extensions. Oh, and a model 17 smooth faced trigger.

Personally, i use my agency's service weapon: The S&W M&P40. It's probably not the worlds greatest pistol, but my familiarity with it is the edge... Although if your preferred platform is the 1911 you can't beat pretty much any model of Springfield XD. Personally I would suggest the XD(m) in a full size 9mm.

Glock 19.

Particularly helpful to the quest were all the previous threads over the years I found on the subject using the search button. ;)

I have found none better than the HK P2000 in LEM (V4) with low-profile mag baseplates. Either in .40 or 9 it suits my purposes better than anything else. Fantastic pistol.

Everything else is just for fun.

Glock 17

Sold all the high end 1911s after running it for a year in competition and one 4000 round weekend without cleaning.

That's a good answer! :p

At this point in time it would have to be the Glock.19. Though, like most of us here, always on the lookout for what's "new"!

I think that is a much more accurate way to state it - which handgun is meeting your needs, such that you can focus on practice and training.

Same here. I was all over the map with handguns - Glock 30, 1911, CZ P-01 etc. until I sought professional instruction and realized the problem was me, and not the gun. Since that time, my main guns are an M&P9c and a M&P9FS.

I agree. If I spent more money on training and ammo instead of playing musical chairs with various handguns all these years I would be a far better shooter than I am today.

But I would like to give some credit to my Glock, a G26 in my case. I realized I did not like two different trigger pulls. I realized I preferred not having a manual safety (or a decocker). I realized I liked the fact I could find parts everywhere and I wasn't intimidated about detail stripping it and fixing it myself. I realized I've learned to appreciate the grip angle and consistent trigger which seemed to help me shoot better and more consistently. I liked the fact there were other compatible mid size (G19) and full size guns (G17/G34) that seemed to fulfill every role I could want from a defensive handgun.

The realization that I did not necessarily feel better armed with a .40 or .45 also influenced me as well.

This is the longest I've gone without feeling the need for a new type of handgun since I bought my first handgun more than 18 years ago.

psshhh... plastic guns ;)

this week it's a cz75 pcr, week before it was a 642, week before glock 19, next week.....

hehe... seriously, a good 80% of my trigger time's behind the cz. I got it about 4 years ago, and ever since, all of em I've bought, tried, and played with always left me with "where's my cz?" Still haven't quit lookin though.

Pretty much the Glock platform (G17, G19, G21, G34). Realistically, they fulfull 95% of my handgun needs, and let me concentrate on practice and training, versus a never-ending search for the Holy Grail.

Best, Jon

Well said ..... put the $$$ to training and ammo. I do not have a choice in the issue firearm. Currently a Smith and Wesson M&P.40. For CCW they are open to most handguns, but duty we're restricted to that one handgun. So for the most part I run the M&P.

My last purchase was an Ed Brown Special Forces... I think that will be my last one for a while. I'm tired of going for years... Buying, paying off a gun over a few months, and then buying another... So on and so forth...

However, I think the gun that has stopped me looking for a carry gun is my Beretta 92FS. I LOVE this gun... Most of my other guns are just range toys. Only 23 guns are carry guns. But, once I started carrying the 92FS - I found the perfect carry gun...

What handgun stopped my search? None...

What paused my search for the last several years was the Glock 19.

My carrying an issued M&P full size 9mm for almost 4 years now has led me to carrying it over my Glock 19, on my own time, about 50% of the time.

I now spend more energy training with the equipment I have, and not with the equipment I wish I had. Had I started doing so 10-15 years ago, I'd have alot more money, less storage issues in the safe, and I would be much more proficient.

But then it was a fun ride to get to where I am currently...

The one pistol that I am totally enamored with at this point in time is the full sized FDE M&P45 that I bought from Grant almost 2 years ago. I have not changed a thing on it, although I am wanting to send it off to David Bowie for a trigger job and a set of night sights to see if that will make it even better.

I have to say that this pistol feels like it was molded for my hand. I love it. I keep it loaded with Speer Gold Dot 230gr JHP's, and a Surefire X300 on the rail. It rests on my nightstand every night.

Wow - Todd's NONE really is where it is at. That damn personal attachment I tend to make with most things bought. 1911, BHP, Beretta 92s, Walther P99s - like them all for different reasons, not necessarily the right reasons.

For whatever reason, Glocks have not made that attachment for me, but that is what I carry. <READ MY TAG LINE> That is what I fire most consistantly. That is my "commuter car" or as some have described it, the AK of handguns. The G19 is the tool for me.

Gosh, I will keep looking just to replace it. Hoping the Gen IV could do it for me.

For CCW it was after a 4" Dan Wesson .357, followed by a Colt 1991-A1, a Glock 21, a Glock 19, a Glock 17L for a good while (with Glock 26 as a BUG for both), and a Steyr M9, with an FNP-45 now doing cold weather duty (with a .380 PPK as BUG for both). I promise, thats it.

I am cozy with my XD .45 tactical for now.... dont see another platform on the horizon yet. The G20 has tickled my fancy a bit and so has the Dan Wesson line of 1911s... If I could afford a USP .45 I would love to own one. The M&P .45 also looks promising...

when Weather, Clothing, Mood allows 45 XD w/ trit sights, Crimson trace and light. otherwise.. CZ83 The reason I chose 45XD and CZ83(SS) reliable and I like them, don't rust, don't malfunction, both carry 13+1. Don't have anything against any others have been issued and carried G17/19s, 1911A1, M-9, walther 9mm and a few others.

Ed Brown Special Forces... I'd experimented with some Para Ordnance guns and found them sorely lacking.

I was considering (gasp) ditching the 1911 platform despite using them pretty well, until I saved my pennies and picked up the SF.

It works for me. :)
