I saw an article today that mentioned the USS New York, LPD-21, is going on her maiden voyage to New York. She is scheduled to be commissioned Nov 7th.

I don't know about anyone else, but I find it very just and fitting and just that we built a warship out of steel from the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Her sister ships, the Arlington and the Somerset are still under construction.

What class of ship is that considered?

Looks pretty wicked.

Hey thanks.

I saw that on Fox this evening. That ship has 8 tons of World Trade Center steel in it. A very fitting tribute to 911 as a 'phoenix".

I would have guessed a LSD, but I knew that was not right

some pics are in this link....http://www.nola.com/news/index.ssf/2009/10/photos_uss_new_yorks_sails_tow.html

A testament to what Americans can do. Something positive out of a tragedy.

I would have prefered an agrresor type, front line ass kicker get the name, but with the world situation, this one may be pretty much, frontline. Whatever, GO USA!!!!

Ummm... That was pretty much acknowledged. It just doesn't have the flair of a modern Carrier, Destroyer, etc. And those forces deploy from many more ways than most will ever know, btw.
And I know, the Navy doesn't name those vessels for cities/states, FYI. Maybe an exception could have been made for a vessel named U.S.S. New York?
Thanks, mod.

It's a beautiful ship and it would have been fitting to be commissioned on September 11.

Wishing her fair winds and following seas.

May she be a lucky ship, and success for all who sail aboard her.

And of course you have to love her motto- "Never Forget". I had some cools pics and Emails during her construction when I was working for Navsea. I will see if I can find them to post.

Never forget, there are two types of ships: submarines and targets.

Note that the USS OHIO (SSGN 726) was converted to carry not only cruise missiles but also SEALs and Force Recon Marines.

Hows come I don't see any guns on the new boat. That seems like fail to me.

Well, that class ship carries 30mm close range cannons and missiles. Probably a good number of machine gun mounts as well. As mentioned above, it's real power comes from the helo gunships and it's ability to land ground forces. Honestly, even a carrier by itself isn't that impressive, it's what it carries that makes it a big threat. Or even the USS Boxer that was in the news a while back for a successful pirate hunt. These ships deliver hurt, indirectly.

Amphibious transport dock = LPD.

It's type may be an LPD, but it belongs to the New York class of LPDs.

As you know, a class of ships is officially known by the name of the first to be commissioned.

USS Arleigh Burke, lead ship of its class for example

Makes me very proud! What a mighty, and special ship. Too bad she, couldn't be commissioned on the 10th, though..
