A friend of mine is looking at a 590A1 locally. It is a police Trade in in great condition. They are asking 299 which seems ok but I am not to familiar with this configuration. It has a 18.5 inch barrel with a bead sight. Mine has a 20 inch barrel with he Ghost-ring sight and he wants to make this shotgun have the same configuration (minus the longer barrel).

So his question is if there is a way to replace the bead sight with Ghost ring and a post front sight. And is there an extension that works with the 18.5 inch 590 A1.

The front sight of the 590A1 will have to be silver soldered on by a gunsmith unless you replace the barrel with one already attached. The receiver of the 590 I used to own was drilled and tapped so the rear sight would just need to be screwed on. Wilson Combat (Scattergun Technologies) or TacStar should have magazine extensions for you. I got everything for my 870 on the Brownell"s website.

Getting the front sight mounted usualy means you will have to have the barrel refinished(if done right). It's common for people to use various epoxies to do so with mixed results, I wouldn't do it on a hard use shotgun. I use a VangComp +1extension on my 590ish shotgun(avitar), he is the primary company that makes extensions for the 590. Max100 from several other boards makes a +2 out of a Choate extension and you can also get +1 or +2's from Nordic Comp.

If I got off my arse I would have some of all the above in stock:eek:

The 18" 590's are the best of the Mossies for me.

Is 299 a good price on these? I am thinking about picking one up myself since you can never have to many good shotguns.

My 590 has ghost rings and a speedfeed stock. I think I paid around $500 back in 2004.

That's a good price for a 590A1.

Check out XS Sights shotgun page.

They have a front big dot that Epoxies over the existing front bead sight.
Although I would likely silver solder it instead. Or use one of the ghost ring and rifle sight sets.

Great choice, make sure and get the bayonet for it as well!

It makes a hell of a conversation piece.

Especially with any anti gun friends you might have or make.:)
Ask me how I know this...

This model doesn't have the Bayonet lug. It is the 18 inch model with only bead sights. I am thinking about getting the 20 inch 590A1 with ghostring sights. I just can't make up my mind. Thankfully I have a few days to make up my mind.

Do you know what the quality of the Mossberg ghost ring sights is like? I was just looking at a Benelli, with LPA ghost ring sights, and a Mossberg, with proprietary ghost ring sights, side by side and the two sets of sights look very different but I couldn't really tell if different looks equaled different quality.

Mossberg GRS are every bit as good, just not as pretty as the other ones.
