Sweet dude you got the ACOG! I love mine, though I like that amber a bit more than the red. Looks great on that SBR!
Thanks Wes!
I did get a chance to check out both amber and red at a gunshow a few months ago. The amber was bright indoors but I knew the red would be easier to see outdoors- especially around here with a lot of tall yellowish grass and such. This is Indiana after all ;)

2 is 1, and 1 is none.
I like running 2 lights sometimes. The guys that know me from TOS know that I've run a 2 light gun in the past. I liked the Vtac mount alot. The only thing better than a Vtac mount is 2 Vtac mounts.

A little history, my department like most smaller departments did not have the cash to fully fund our SWAT Team when it was started. One of the ways we saved money was we were granted 25 M16A1's from the Army, back in the early 1990's. For the longest time they stayed in the A1 configuration down to the triangle front handguards. When I got on the team in 2002 they were still pretty much the same A1's (all new wear parts). They worked fine for perimeter work and we primarily used the MP5's for entry stuff. Well I got on the team and bought my own Colt LE Carbine w/16" barel and colapsable stock at the time I had a cheap Fobus front rail system and my Surefire 900A. I convinced the powers that be that for some situations my setup was far superior to the MP5 for entry.
Well as budget allowed we started swapping out the A1 uppers for 10.5" uppers. For whatever reason our Sgt. that does ordering refused to go the flat top route so I still have to deal with the carry handle on the upper. Because our budget is fairly small the upper was the only thing changed out so everything else on my department owned gun is mine (stock, rails, light, laser).
I plan on upgrading my stock to a UBR and am considering an Eotceh I am also going to a single point sling when I get my UBR. I will be supplementing my Mag stock with 4 PMAG's and adding ranger plates to all my mags. I'll post more pics when the rest of my stuff gets in. Only sad thing is when I retire I will have to pull all of my parts off of her and turn the upper and lower back into the PD. But I still have my LE Carbine and can just put my parts on her.

I would say ditch the UTG before going with an Eotech.

Very nice! Does the light ever get gunked up being that close to the flash hider?
Very nice! Does the light ever get gunked up being that close to the flash hider?
Yes, but so far it has not been that big of a deal. Just some gunk on the lense after prolonged firing and a slight burn mark of the light's bezel.
I plan on buying a SureFire FH556-212A flash hider/adapter that should fix the issue.
ehr & msr: It's a Robinson XCR. I had Alex cut a heavy profile 12" bbl. back to 11" and then turn it down to a light profile. The gas block shoulder sits at 9" so the shortest reliable bbl. you can use is an 11". He is in the process of making a shorter piston/op-rod and when he is finished he will turn an 8" light barrel in 6.8 SPC for me. I will have to mill the top rail back 2.5" to accomodate the gas block but what I will end up with is an 8" PDW in 6.8 SPC. The side and bottom rails will terminate at the end of the barrel giving the PDW that MP5SD look. As it is now the ballance is better than my other SBR'd AR's and the adjustable gas system allows me to tune it for the least amount of recoil for any ammo I am using. I shoot 2k or 3k rounds between cleanings and probably could go much longer than that as it doesn't get very dirty with the piston set the way it is.

Here's my .22 SBR, using a 7.5" Kuehl barrel and a Millet 1-4x scope. The muzzle ends right behind the end of the handguard, so I put a Phantom flash suppressor on it for now. I realize the scope looks sort of goofy with it sticking out so far towards the muzzle; my plan is to get a QD F/A capable .22 suppressor to use with the gun, which should help balance it a little more.

MadDog, how well does the XCR do with the can? Any of the blow back issues like with an AR? Is it as quiet as a suppressed AR (or close?) I've heard they are a little louder. I was thinking about doing a similar build to what you have there.

How does it balance with the UBR? I was thinking of putting a UBR on one of my SBRs.
Hi guys, I'm new the boards. I've learned quite a few things reading through this board, and I finally decided to join up. In a couple of months, I'll have one in the form of a N4 light low profile. Can't wait. =)

The gun balances nicely. The UBR isn't that heavy. I was a little worried, with everybody saying how heavy it was, but when I got it & installed it, it didn't bother me at all. The gun doesn't feel any heavier than when I had the SOPMOD installed.

Thanks man I've been running the SOPMOD on my SBR so glad to hear it balances. I was suprised at the weight when I got mine too and its quickly become my favorite stock so I'm gonna have to pick up a few more.
Both are frankenguns with 11.5" Sabre barrels/uppers. Lots of similarities here. I’m a huge fan of the MIAD grip, CTR stock, KAC Aimpoint mount, KAC vertical grips, etc.

Thanks for the pics mark. Makes me want the standard FSB again!
Yeah, I've gone back and forth over that issue. On a few guns I like the longer sight radius you can get with a longer rail and flip-up and the extra length of rail shielding me from the hot barrel is another bonus. With an Aimpoint turned off I can use it like a giant ghost ring and the fixed FSB makes that a whole lot faster to do. When in doubt I'll get one of each. LOL.

Here is my Bulgy AKS-74U 5.45 build by Overland Industries. Fit and finish is damn near perfect with crisp trigger, smooth action, tight folder and straight sites. Gun finish is black satin moly resin with Russian red furniture. Other additions include Bulgy side rail, Stormwerkz 1913 top cover rail and 4 pc. flash hider. I plan on mounting an Aimpoint Micro H-1 when funds permit but for now I have an M2 in LaRue RAS II mount that will suffice. Sling will include a BFG Vickers sling or BFG Israeli 2 point. This Krink is considerably lighter than my M92 Yugo which is prolly due to the almost 2" shorter barrel length. I will post a range report shortly.

Thanks guys.
The Stormwerkz rail is very soild when mounted due to the 3 properly tapped mounting screws. The builder, who assembled the Krink, commented on how well the rail fit within the rear sight. Initially he thought that he may have to use some JB Weld however after mounting it he realized that it was fine by itself. I mounted my M2 in LaRue RAS II mount and it fit perfect. In addition, when I removed the optic there were no mars to the rail which is nice. I have other rails that have been mangled from my LaRue mounts. The M2 in RAS II sits slightly high for my liking (although it is tolerable) therefore I look forward to procurring a Micro T-1 or H-1.

Ed helped me out with a couple of rifles. He generally promptly returned emails and phone calls, and when he moved to the beautiful new facility (worth the trip if you're within 3 hours of Brunswick, GA) and they misplaced a rifle he called me, owned up and when I drove through to pick it up on my way to JAX he threw in a couple magazines to make up for being late in shipping.
Great service and selection, and he's got a fantastic range.

I've got to figure out this whole tactical sling thing. I bought a Midwest Industries rear sling mount and I think it's a no-go. It won't even tighten down to where the upper half meets with the lower half. Is this designed this way? It just looks all discombobulated and whatnot

yep, thats the way i thought it would look, thats why i went with the mount that slips down the tube and over the castle nut, i got the slot end plate adapter, but they have the same type for QD, #MCTAR-30.
Troy also has that type but it looks stronger, im waiting for it to get here for my SBR. that one would be #PGRSA.
good luck.

Stickman,
Any problems with that POF obscuring the Aimpoint?
Nope, I have thrown on a few different front sights, and have used both ADM T-1 mount bases, and its not an issue with any of them.

Indeed it is that BUIS. I didn't think I would like it at all, and after a few thousand rounds, its really grown on me. We did a write up on that BUIS over on WEVO.

Tax stamp arrived Thursday, upper arrived Saturday, and I took the assembled gun to the Indiana Gun Owners Forum "NFA Day" outing on Sunday. I fired one magazine through it on my lower to make sure it functioned, then the upper spent the rest of the day being run full-auto on a friend's M-16 lower. Multiple shooters ran approximately 500 rounds of mixed M193, Wolf, Silver Bear and who-knows-what through it over a 6-hour timeframe, and it never missed a lick. It's a 8.5 ounce Heavy Buffer made by Slash
http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=125&t=491821
Lawdog,
Its an Insight Technologies CVL (Carbine Visible Laser). It was called the PEQ5? in the military. I like it, but if I was going to do it again I'd look strongly at the OTAL. OTAL is a bit more compact, lighter, made of metal vs plastic, and I have been told that the OTAL will take a LaRue mount, but I haven't confirmed that.
I've only had it for a short while so I'm still wringing it out myself. I haven't tested the ability to maintain zero if I take it off, but so far it does everything I want it to. I don't use the tape switch, as the on/off is right by my thumb for the flashlight switch.
Both the OTAL and CVL run about $500 last I checked as well, so they seem pretty comparable. I'm happy with it.

Stickman, what brand name of the flashider on your SBR?
It's an AAC Blackout.
And the CVL will hold zero just fine after removal & reinstallation. I have one & can hit the bzo shillouette on the upper starboard side of the taget with it at 25 yards. I am quite pleased with the CVL's brightness, ruggedness & compact size.
That's good to know about the CVL. I'm anxiously awaiting for the days to get shorter so I have more lowlight time for shooting to do some more work with it. Not too many people use them, so its hard to find info and training.
It's an AAC Blackout.

No problem. The top weapon is a Yugo M92 kit built by East Bloc Imports on a NoDak Spud (NDS) receiver in 7.62 x 39 caliber. The bottom weapon is a Bulgarian AKS-74U kit built by Overland Industries on an NDS receiver in 5.45 x 39 caliber. Both weapons are Krinkov style Kalishnikovs although most people do not consider the M92 as being a true Krinkov due to the origin and 2" longer barrel. If memory serves, the M92 has a 10.5" non-chromelined barrel and the AKS-74U has an 8.25" chrome-lined barrel. Both are a very fun to shoot, reliable and capable of minute-of-man accuracy out to 150 yds.

Nick,
Yeah that's the 11.5" Bravo Company barrel that was used at the last 2 Pat Rogers classes.
The carbine is not perfectly balanced with the can on the gun, but all things considered the entire package is not too heavy and balances better than I thought it would. Even with the can on, the gun is lighter than the FDE mid-lenght that I use for the run and gun rifle matches.
Next time you are going to be in the neighborhood, drop me a line and we'll put some rounds through it.

I dusted off a soft box and my light stands and hooked up a Canon 20D that I'm getting rid off for one last hoorah before I ship it off to it's new owner next week.
Anyway I was never good with "Studio" work on people so I'm probably not any bettter with a black rifle.
Stickman would not be proud :D
Yes yes, I know the BUIS is missing.....that's becuase I don't have one yet.
I've got to decide between the Troy and the LMT.
I've also go to get a receiver end plate QD sling mount. I had the MI and it blew. I believe I'm going to try the Tango Down model next. Mr. Hwang form Rainier Arms said that he has had good experiences with it.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/geezerb/SNQtYmHSkwI/AAAAAAAAAKs/ZhK3glkUIlM/s800/IMG_2092.JPG
1. Did you get a BUIS yet?
2. Have you thought about getting a single point sling mount endplate, instead of using a larger, more bulky piece?
3. What are you going with once you ditch the 20D? I have a 20D that I still use when I go up in choppers, a high possibility of camera damage, or when there is team training being done. My 20D has got a lot of work published for me.

Stick, I got the Tango QD release for carbines and it fits better than the MI product. The thing to do is do what you suggest and get the end plate. I took the Colt armorers course almost 15 years ago when I was new to the biz and I never built on it so I guess I'm scared to fool around with my black rifle like that:p
I know it can't be hard to complete with the right tools so I just need to get the tools and get it done.
I did get the LMT Buis also and put the Surefire M500 on it for old school rifle feel.
I'll post some updated pics soon.
I finally sold my second 20D and because of the drop in the 40D price I got $100 less than I did on the first 20D a month or 2 earlier.
I've been moonlighting with a Rebel XSI (Mi Wife) and a new 430ex2 flash that was just released.
I almost paid for my 2 cameras doing contract work but nothing published with credit really, (why is it so hard for people to want to give you photo credit?)since I only halfway know what I am doing.
I'm saving Amazon Gc's and hope to get a 40d or 50d for Christmas.....not sure which since one is 85-90 % of the other for nearly $700 less.

Thank you. I love the iron sight. It's perfect for lower 1/3 co-witness and is about as stupid-proof a design as I could find. When I sighted the iron sights in, the windage was 100% dead on at mechanical zero. Quality gear!

I bought the muzzle brake from K-var and it will NOT fit the Yugo M92. I believe someone on the AKforum or ARFcom was trying to fabricate a unit that works with 26mm; however I have not heard anything lately.
The furniture is Bulgarian krink hg's with a Bulgy checkered grip. The guy that completed the build called it his "Russian Red" finish which is about all I know. He did have to lightly sand blast the varnish off the grip which I understand is pretty difficult b/c of the checkering.
Cheers

Was there a write up for this gun already? Didn't see it on tyv.net
Unfortunately, no.
The sling writeup is complete and sent off to the vendor for initial review. Should be posted shortly.
The rest of the carbine is somewhat academic at this point, as I've been almost exclusively shooting the AK this year. In fact, my only AR time in 2008 has been with this carbine in the interest of testing this sling, but the last time I shot it I still had the larger Aimpoint mounted not the micro shown here. The Redimag and BAD weren't installed at that time either.
My intention is to run this carbine in a Jeff Gonzales class in February with the complete review to follow.
Rob,
What light mount did you use on that build. I need a light mount that I can use with standard handguards.
Thanks

It wasn't a cheap project by any stretch. Mags are killing me now. I can get a brand new USGI M4 magazine for about half the price of a used AK74 mag:confused: 5.45mm ammo is still refreshing "cheap" and available.

They are standard AR15 sights. There is a .4", or a difference in rail height. 3 clicks down on the front sight post and I was dialed at 50/200

OK. I asked because of the comment you made about lower 1/3, which makes sense now that I realize you are starting nearly half an inch higher that you would be with an AR. It seems to me that standard AR sights on the XCR are already at the same height as an optic mounted for lower 1/3 cowitness, so when you then mount an optic even higher than that you're definitely getting into the stratosphere. :D

It runs great, although I've only plinked with it and haven't tried to see how far I can shoot accurately with it. I will say that small soda cans at 50 meters don't stand a chance! :p
That's well within CQB room clearing distances.
FWIW, there is an AR based .45 solution based on a proprietary lower and grease gun magazines. Most of the production teething problems seem to have been worked out now. Magazines are cheap (relatively) and available, manual of arms is familiar and IIRC, the AR one is both a bit shorter and lighter than the HK.

I think that upper was $1399. It did not come with BUIS.
The only problem I have had is after I swapped out the bolt for a LMT enhanced bolt to experiment. The LMT bolt sucked. I was getting FTE's like crazy
I switched back to the factory bolt and it worked fine again. I just got back from shooting actually. I shot close to a case of 500 without a single issue.
I am so impressed with my LWRC upper that I want to add a another once the year turns over.
