the rail ended up being longer than I thought because I'm a dumb ass and didn't really think about it when I ordered it lol

It's a DD 12.5 bbl with a 12.0 lite rail which actually measures ~12.6 with a fixed DD front sight, gear sector scout mount, mini scout, AFG2, and a peq2A on an ADM mount.

Streamlight
I know....the whole 'AFG doesn't belong on SBR's', but I tried VFG's, XTM panels, rail covers only, and this feels the best as far as the angle of my wrist holding the weapon, so piss off if it bothers you!:sarcastic:
I've been happy w/ the LWRC...shoots any ammo I put thru, although milsurp 5.56 is a goddam fireball!
It is one loud little ****er, but its fun to shoot & accurate enuf for me. It weighs more than a DI gun, but it is perfectly balanced IMO & carries nicely on hikes.
Since the pic I received my Jager strike plate, as I got the UBR used & it was missing the sling loop. I've also added a Gear Sector sling rail adapter for a 2-point in patriot brown---a near perfect match to LWRC's MRE.

GREAT thread here...really the reason I just joined ;)

Everyone here has some nice rigs! Hopefully I'll be adding one pretty soon...plan on getting Noveske's MK18 10.5" upper sometime soon!

Just one question...I see alot of guys using suppressors on their DI SBR's...did you guys tune the gas port, or are you using heavier buffers, or what? How is the reliability?

Thanks

Got my first SBR put together recently.

Between starting this rifle and getting my stamp back I decided to go back to college. So due to lack of funds I had to combine a few projects and basically ended up assembling the upper from spare parts. This was most definitely not how I envisioned the rifle coming together but in the end I really like the way it turned out.

That paint is actually very easy. You can use a laundry bag, fishnet stocking (probably easiest method - just put the entire rifle into one stocking and paint), or anything with that pattern. Spray your lightest coat of paint, as always, and then when you want to get the mesh pattern in you just paint with your darkest color over the mesh.

Awesome!

I used mesh of different sizes and two colors of krylon camo paint.

Wrap the gun parts in the mesh, spray from different distances and angles with the light color first, then again with the darker color, and let dry.

The best thing about krylon is it naturally chips and wears, and gets even more camo looking as a result.

That was my first attempt at a snake-skin pattern. Worked well enough considering I had no experience.

Thanks, I bought the handguards a few years ago from a guy who modified them himself. FYI I believe PK firearms is selling some pretty good copies of the carbine length triangle handguards now too.

I really like the LAR OPS-4 uppers with the left side charge. I wanted to build an upper like yours but I like the Magpul BAD lever and it doesn't work with those uppers. I know a couple of the guys at LAR and talked to them about making a larger cutout to accomadate the BAD lever. We'll see...

I debated a bit whether or not to share this. I started the process before I knew about M4Carbine and as far as I was concerned at the time, RRA was as good as any other AR manufacturer. At any rate, I picked this stuff up finally after a long drawn out process that ended up taking almost 9 months. Hopefully my next one doesn't get delayed at every turn! I think my next step is going to be having Noveske convert my Light Recce into a factory SBR and plopping a Mk18 upper on it. I've already decided on a Surefire Mini suppressor for 5.56.

At any rate, here it is:
http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/ff328/stifled_bucket/T2i/IMG_1964.jpg

RRA LAR-9
SWR Trident 9
Once SWR is in the office I am going to order a 3 lug mount for the AR as well as a Nielsen device for use with my G17.

I'm extremely happy with the suppressor. Subsonic ammo is surprisingly quiet--the action is by far the loudest thing going on.

The SBR, not so much... Feeding has been a problem, more so from the factory mag, which is a bit depressing. I'm going to have to do some research on the 9mm platform and hopefully come up with a solution, but as it stands this is a range toy until I get it figured out.

Word. That's a nice stick.

It has been my experience that with HK mags you do not necessarily get what you pay for. I would rather run a Pmag or quality GI mag.

Just a heads though. Take it in the spirit given, as that is a sweet SBR.

Noveske 10.5 Stainless barrel
Surefire M600 C Scout Light in Danger Close Mount.

28 rounds of Hornady TAP 5.56 with T-2 bullet.

Also 6 surefire batteries in the magpul stock.

I'm thinking of selling this upper and buying a 10.5 N4 barrel and one of the Troy TRX rails as it should shave some weight off.

Accuracy wise its a better gun than I am shooter. I have no problems hitting torso sized steel out to 300 yards (farthest my range has steel at) with iron sights. Only complaint is the weight.

Accuracy wise its a better gun than I am shooter. I have no problems hitting torso sized steel out to 300 yards (farthest my range has steel at) with iron sights. Only complaint is the weight.

Noveske N4 Shorty Switchblock - great handling package with the NovaTac 120T flashlight in the GS mount (a lot lighter than the VLTOR / G2 combo on the 14.5" gun). Still sorting out the handstop / VFG, but need to run through a Carbine class before settling on final configuration.

care to elaborate on the NovaTac 120T flashlight ? looks good.

Impact, I have a Malkoff M60 in the G2 /VLTOR mount on the 14.5" GP gun and it works fine, however, when I tried it on the Shorty, I could feel the difference in how agile the front of the gun was transitioning between targets (not as noticeable when sticking that suppressor on the front, to be sure). For the Shorty, its primary purpose was an Indoor / HD weapon (mostly suppressed). I was looking for light weight and ~110-120 lumens. The NovaTac fits the bill very well in the GS mount. Plus, with the Breakout, I didn't want a weaponlight front end exposed to all the blast / debris when I ran it unsuppressed. The GS mount is not quick-detach, so, I wanted a shorter overall light length to leave it as a permanent solution. The U/I is pretty straight forward, although a light AD is a lot easier on the NovaTac without a lockout for the switch. On the G2, I rotate the switch until a bump on the switch won't trigger the light - when I am ready to start low-light shooting, a quick roll with the side of the forefinger on the G2 switch's side returns the switch to being hot on depress.

Hope that helps - Pk

When did HK start doing a lighter profile barrel on the 10.5" HK416's?

I'm not sure exactly when they switched but the lighter profile barrels are now standard on both 10.5" & 14.5" 416's.

To get the original heavy barrel you have to special order them.

Obviously I think this is a smart move.

The BCM Gunfighter CH is now standard equipment on all Noveske rifles and uppers and can be bought separately as an accessory for the same price as the BCM CH. It's Noveske-labeled, however. It also has a nice bevel at the top edge of the locking lever, which decreases or eliminates the chance of getting one's finger pinched. I'm not sure if that same modification has been made to the BCM-labeled charging handles. Judging from the photos on BCM's website (http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/v/vspfiles/photos/BCM%20GFH%20Mod%204%20556-13.jpg), it doesn't appear so.

It is a 10.5". The ACS balances perfect because of the heavy barrel and rail forend. With both the A2 flash hider and the Surefire flash hider I hardly have any recoil.

As for the X300, just move it back a couple notches and you'll be fine. ;) Or maybe get a Battle Comp to diffuse the blast more so it's not directed right into your lens? :D
Have you tried shooting it where it is mounted to see if it is much of a problem?

Not yet, just got the X300 yesterday. I wont be as concerned when the NT4 is on there.

Ill move it back a few but I want to make sure I can turn it on easily with my thumb. Where its at now works pretty well with that.

Haha thanks, this in no way is my first AR I've had my fair share and still have others. This is just my first SBR AR, I have been wanting one for awhile now and finally bit the bullet so to speak and was lucky enough to be able to have the KAC SBR's come out when I decided to get one.

I shoulda said that differently, if I had the money I would have made a KAC my first AR ;). Whats funny Is after about a year and a half of building up my rifle I've got about $2000 tied up in it. More than that when I look at how many things I've tried, didn't like and then changed lol.

Out of curiousity, how do you like the 7in rail? I really like the flip up FSB but I dont really like 7in rails. I'm kind of surprised that KAC went with this setup when long rails seem to be what everybody is using these days. At 6'1" I have pretty long arms and prefer atleast a 10in rail. I have found 11 to sort of be my happy spot.

Ah cool, yeah I started learning the hard way about 5 years ago with what I wanted and have found mostly what works for me but it is a never ending process.

I am 6'6 with ape arms so the 7 inch rail is a little short to me, KAC is eventually going to do a run with the mid length URX rails on these but they are using all the 7inch urx and flip up fsp till they are out kind of thing. I would like to switch the rail for a URX III or the LW URX II and of course pin a low profile gas block but I may just pick up another upper but then I would like it to be an E3 upper so I get the benefits from the bolt, etc.

That is the Gear Sector hand stop not the Knights hand stop, it is that way so I can use it as an index point and apply reward pressure with my hand to drive the gun into my shoulder. Some people use it the other way round as an index point/ a reminder where to not pass with their fingers but it would be a bad idea to me to push out forward on it as you would get a less stable shooting platform.

Edited: The KAC handstop is a great piece of kit and can be used in the same manner, I also have a Danger Close hand stop which is my favorite out of the three because it is low profile but gives the best purchase on my hand.

Yes, I definitely recommend it especially over the magwell grip. The further your hand is out on the rifle (safely no grabbing barrel ;) ) the better, it gives you better control, less fatigue, etc.

about the KAC mount/suppressor? Knights has a new design mount and suppressor they are R&Ding right now that hopefully will be produced here soon. The MAMs stands form multi axis mount and according to Kevin B. on the 7.62 guns decreases the recoil a large amount and makes the recoil impulse more straight back in to the shoulder. Also it does not need to be timed like the triple tap, and they are working on a 5.56 version as well and new cans utilizing the mount. There are pictures floating around on silencer talk from the shot/tour Knights hosted back a little while ago.

^^ Would you mind posting specs on the barrel of your SCAR?

Length of barrel, any mods to the gas port?

Here's a few side by side shot's of mine and Stephen H's CQC's which offers a visual comparison of available components. Mine is slightly heavier due to the Branham rail and Eotech.

While I'd LOVE to get a Scar and SBR it, I can't justify the initial cost of just the gun.

Made some changes to my 12.5 "General Purpose Carbine"

Changed:

11in Vtac TRX Extreme to a 10in MI Rail(Had it on hand, using until I find something else)
Vltor A5 w/ MagPul ACS

Trying to decide what optic I want. I'm down to the TR24-G I think. Just not 100% sure yet.

Waiting on my Troy BUIS.

Why the change from the VTAC to MI handguard?

jwfuhrman
04-27-11, 20:22
tryin something different. it balances better with the extra weight of the ACS and A5 on the back. I had the MI rail laying around from an older build. Just using this until I figure out what route I wanna go, probably a DD Lite of some kind

I love my TR24G. Its a perfect all purpose optic if you don't mind the added weight. I also have a TA44SR-10 ACOG which is nice and light but I still am getting used to the reticle. Also an Eotech is a good choice but the always popular Aimpoint T-1 wins out in battery life. Of course the Trijicon's never need batteries. Ever.

Just wish I had an SBR.

04-27-11, 20:49
Between growing up hunting, to 3gun, I'm so used to looking thru a scope, mostly a 4x scope, that if I could afford it, I'd really like an ACOG with the Horse Shoe reticle, but the TR24G will be fine.

Go with the TR24 JW...that's a fantastic play for our similar shared vision of a GP or Outdoor CQB type carbine:)

FYI...AR's don't work when they get wet, or least ones that don't have a piston;)

Trident.

Why'd you flip out the selector switch with another one that was 90 degrees?

If you were gonna flip it out, wouldn't you have gone with the BAD-ASS 45 degree one?

Also I was wondering why the 300m sight? (I've always liked the 200-600m one more.)

04-28-11, 08:34
Great pics, Mr. Fuhrman! As far as swapping the rail out later, if this one works and balances, why bother?
Trident's right, you need to watch LWRC's little vid of how piston ARs fire full auto, problem free after being immersed in a pond. :jester:

I probably wont switch rails, but the MI was bought for a "Cheap build" using an old bushmaster, which is no longer being used so i thru it on here. I rly want a Mk18 RIS II, but thats down the road.

I know AR's dont like water, but since I've gotta finish the Ark Im build since its been raining for almost 40 days and nights already, the way the water was beaded up on my Jeep, it would make for a good picture. Then as soon as i get setup to take the pics(taken with my phone btw), it started freaking raining again....

I got a 45 bad-ass aboard the cqb...along with all my other rifles, only way I roll:cool:

I equally like the micro 200-600m sight as I run one on my mrp recce and I'd like to swap out the troy's on my mrp spr for a set of micros to include the rear 2-600m sight. I love the KAC micro's! The micro 300m rear is more tailored for this CQB build.

OK. Is it the 12"? I'm looking at their website right now. Looks like 12" is the shortest piston upper they offer while 10.5" is the shortest DI upper they offer. Hard for me to see if his is a piston gun due to the rail covers and flashlight (I'm obviously not too good at ID'ing the LMT guns).

CQB MRP Upper. Knights E3 lower.

Knights does make an SBR. Currently using old Vero Beach lowers, CTR stock, older gas block flip up sights, 7'' URX II rails, and 11.5'' barrel.

Knights will be building them on E3 SBR lowers at some point in the future from what I understand.

How do you have that handstop attached to the forearm? Almost looks like it's attached to a short piece of rail, but it's right above a the black in the multicam background and I'm unsure.

It's the same rail that comes with the Troy handguard, I just had a machine shop machine down 0.110" to allow to sit closer to the handguard. I personally felt that it sat too proud of the handguard for the way I shoot and the handstop I was looking to use. I hope this helps.
