My Dept issues Winchester RA223R 55gr PSP ammo for use in our patrol rifles. I noticed that this round is not listed in the 5.56 duty load thread.

Is there any penetration data on this round? Is anyone else using it? I'm afraid that this round is going to lack proper penetration. Thanks.

In my experience it is a great coyote load.

Shallow penetration on people though.

It works the same in my experience as the 55gr SP made by Federal, on their site you can find the ballistics test info for their various .223 ammo.

I'll second that this load is a good Coyote round and can handle any impact angle inside 250yds, I have seen this same load used on deer during the Maine Deer season and results were less than acceptable. For Anti personnel use I would speculate that this load would fragment badly as I have seen in deer and coyotes causing a shallow wound track under 10 inches. I'M basing this assumption on older lots of Winchester RA223R 55gr PSP and have not used or seen newer lots used in the past two seasons.

I'm trying to get confimation but, I was told that I didn't have to use the issued ammo. I was told that as long as I use a 55gr soft point round similar to the winchester then I'm within the policy. I'll have to see what other ammo I can find.

The only 55 gr JSP we have found that appears worth using for LE duties is the Fed TBBC round (Tactical--LE223T1 or identical Premium Rifle--P223T2); loads using the 55 gr Barnes TSX all copper OTM (ex. Federal T223S load) are also good.

Have you read this?;

Most LE agencies around here use the Hornady 75 gr TAP OTM, Federal 55/62 gr bonded Tactical JSP, or Winchester 64 gr JSP (it is on the state contract and is VERY inexpensive)--all have worked very well in actual officer involved shootings. For urban LE use, I've carried the Hornady 75 gr OTM in 30 rd mags and a few 20 rd mags of Federal Tactical 62 gr JSP for barrier situations.
