View Full Version : Noveske N4 Carbine - Ammo Comparison

8200rpm
10-24-09, 22:56
Objective: Compare a variety of ammunition in a Noveske N4 Carbine Low Pro w/ ACOG TA33R-8 (3X)
Position: Prone w/ front rest and rear bag to reduce shooter error
Distance: Approx 70 yards
Target: NRA Small Bore Rifle A-23 X-ring = 3/8", 10-ring = 7/8", 9-ring = 1-7/8", 8-ring = 2-7/8", 7 ring = 3-7/8"
All groups were fired within the same hour. No effort was made to "cool" the barrel between shots. Groups were fired in the order shown. No feeding, extraction or other cycling issues were experienced. Bolt always locked back on an empty mag (30 rd. Thermolds ).

The objective was NOT to determine absolute accuracy of the barrel. The glowing red chevron reticle of the 3X mini ACOG on a solid black bullseye is not conducive to accuracy testing. A high magnification scope with a fine cross hair reticle would have been more appropriate for accuracy determination. This was merely an impromptu comparison of ammunition in this carbine with a particular optic. These results may not be indicative of performance in other rifles, other optics, and/or other shooters.

Obvious conclusion: I'm not buying any more PPU M193 for this particular rifle.

i think this depends alot. i use priv 62 gran cuz its the cheapest most accurate ammo i have found. Now i can buy some more accurate stuff but no where near this price point. i can find some cheaper ammo but not as accurate. so priv 62g is my midpoint.

Please post some pics of some of your 10-shot groups from 100 yards using this "accurate" "Prvi 62 grain" ammunition that you speak of.

Nice write up; I picked up a few boxes of Prvi 75gr match today and I plan to try it out in both my 6920 and N4 basic.

Distance was only 70 yards due to the private shooting bay I was in. Point of aim should be verified at a minimum of 100 yards and preferably at 200 yards. 1' x 1' steel plates at 300 and 400 yards are also useful.

The range that I normally go to has steel out to 600, but that's really pushing it. Even when I'm lucky enough to get hits at 500 on torso sized plates, it's really difficult to hear the faint "pud" while wearing ear protection and while others are also shooting on the line.

I gotta stop dicking around shooting groups off a rest and start shooting from field positions. But, curiosity just gets the better of me whenever I come across a different load.

I didn't shoot it on this day, but Federal XM193 (2-3 MOA) was far better than Q3131 (3-4 MOA) in this same setup.

Thanks for posting this. I'll have to keep an eye out for some of that 75gr ammo.

We just got in a few cases of Federal 62gr bonded Tactical ammunition. I fired a few magazines of it a while back (from my N4) and it displayed some fantastic accuracy.
As soon as I get my rifle back in good order I'll try to post some groups with it.

The Federal 62 grain Tactical load is one of the least accurate bonded soft-point loads that I have tested. Most of the people that I know that have used it were barely able to get 3 MOA groups at 100 yards from their duty rifles. The single best 10-shot group that I was able to get with this load fired from a Krieger barreled AR-15 was 2.13". I'll be interested in seeing your results.
