I'm glad to hear that Perry finally has a pop-up range. Better late than never.

I haven't been back home in a long time.
I'm always kind of hungry for solid news about things , and a lot of people who live there never go on post.

Where's the pop-up range at Perry? Petraca , Vail, YKWIM. I heard that the old messhall was gone years ago. I was sad to hear about that.

There's some family history there . One of my relatives surveyed-in the 1000 yard range way back when and the old homeplace Grandparents' farm is 10 or 12 miles away.

they have had popups since the early 90's.

its on the 1000 and 600y ranges, the 1000 is a squad MG popup though

I'll have to try to make this event. Sounds much better than football, shopping, and all the other stupid crap that dominates this time of year. It is open season on rabbit and squirrel, but I think I can put that on hold for a day of combative competition.

The last time I visted Ohio was 1989 , but I never got near Camp Perry.

Found this on the Friends of Camp site. Worth a click.

www.baesel.net/albert1.htm

I had heard quite a bit about the 37th Infantry Division's service in the Pacific during WW2 , but had no idea that the Ohio National Guard unit had deployed as a complete Division in WW1.
Lots of interesting social history in the names that are mentioned: Baesel , Conelly , Ryan , Tavenner , Schmidt , Keller....

I do remember one very old guy who had been in the Guard " in the first War" saying something like:
( Quote)

A Dutchman with a Winchester '97 and a forty-five could come in handy at night. We never had enough of them. Shotguns and pistols , that is. My company had a lot of Dutchmen. Hell , when I was your age you could walk down Main Street and the only people speaking English were the Irish.
;)

(End quote.)

40 miles away there were only a few "Dutch " names in the phone book. Lots of people with roots in Central Europe had Anglo'ed thier old family names.

I shot at the Friends of Camp Perry pop-up match on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Unlike past years (I've attended this event 4 years now), they ran a course that included many multiple 2 and 3 targets at a time, ranging from 50 to 350 meters away.

You face a total of 40 pop-up silhouettes, which stand up for about 4 seconds.

When they used to run mostly single target with an occassional double, I could easily score 40/40. This year, 39 was my best score out of 4 attempts.

In the picture here, I am shooting a 5.45 S&W cut to 14.7 by the late Kurt Walla, with a TA-31F ACOG and an Aimpoint T-1 micro on a 45 degree mount popularized by the 3-gun crowd. With the nearest target at 50 meters, I didn't even need to flip over to the T-1.

I shot two relays with this set up, and two relays with my converted 5.45 Saiga.

The weather was crisp but not too cold, a beautiful day really, and it was a hell of a good time.
