Usually I'm just a reader but I wanted to post a little on my Ruger SR-556. I already have a Colt 20 inch H-bar and I decided to go with a piston gun for my next purchase. Which just occurred as a b-day/recovery gift to myself.
I was in a head-on collision on 7-24-2009 and suffered some serious and life changing injuries. After 3 surgeries and a month in intensive care at the U of Nebraska Med Center I finally got to come home to start recovering. At the time I was seeing a bunch of reviews and talk about the Ruger SR-556 including a podcast with Mas Ayoob talking about the new Ruger. I bought mine for 1449.00 online and paid a local FFL dealer 20.00 to handle the transfer.
I added a EOTech 557 and 3X magnifier with flip to side mount for my optics. A Troy Industries Vertical Battle grip. A Vickers VCAS sling. A Magpul ACS stock. A Magpul enhanced trigger guard. A Fenix Ta21 for my white light needs. Lastly, I have a Geissele SSA Combat Trigger on its way to round out my rifle.
I took the rifle to the range toady and ran 97 rounds of Wolf ammo and 800 rounds of Federal Value Pack ammo in a span of 3 hours. I had cleaned and lubed the rifle prior to the range session but did not see or feel the need to lube the rifle during my shooting session.
The gas regulator was left on the #2 setting and I had no malfunctions at all. I didn't fire from a bunch of unusual shooting positions since my injuries pretty much prevent that so I can't comment about any problems that may crop do to those conditions.
After sighting the EOTech and the Troy Battle sights I started to fire in groups of 2 to 7 rounds at 50 yards as quickly as I could to heat things up. After I fired 8 of the 24 PMAGs I brought along I pivoted the rifle open and took out the BCG. It was warm but that was it. It was also clean. Put BCG back in and continued shooting. Going from optics to the BUIS along with using the magnifier I continued shooting and getting myself used to the rifle and how it functioned and felt while recoiling I decided I really liked this rifle.
I took a 30 minute break to load up the remaining ammo I had and talk to some guys in the lanes around me. A lot of them had heard of the new Ruger and few stated they wanted to buy one but hadn't seen any in the Omaha area yet. The remaining rounds were shot by about 10 other people who were at the range and wanted to try the Ruger. No of them had any malfunctions either and quite a few rested the rifle on the PMAG and shot away.
When I got home I cleaned and lubed the rifle. It was easy. Almost a wipe off and oil then put away type of thing. I had to let the Hoppes sit on the regulator for a minute or two before the carbon loosened up enough to wipe away. So much easier to clean than my Colt even when my Colt barely fired 50 rounds.
I'm going to get some shots of my rifle and get them posted a bit later. Oh and carrier tilt was not noticed on my rifle. It's SN is 590-33XXX and the carrier has the rails machined on the sides. The receiver tube showed some paint missing but it is not missing any material. The tube is smooth as hell and where the paint is missing is just as smooth. There is no gouging from the carrier going on in the receiver tube of my rifle. Same with the trigger and hammer pin walking out issues others have reported.
