View Full Version : My Ruger SR-556

Usually I'm just a reader but I wanted to post a little on my Ruger SR-556. I already have a Colt 20 inch H-bar and I decided to go with a piston gun for my next purchase. Which just occurred as a b-day/recovery gift to myself.

I was in a head-on collision on 7-24-2009 and suffered some serious and life changing injuries. After 3 surgeries and a month in intensive care at the U of Nebraska Med Center I finally got to come home to start recovering. At the time I was seeing a bunch of reviews and talk about the Ruger SR-556 including a podcast with Mas Ayoob talking about the new Ruger. I bought mine for 1449.00 online and paid a local FFL dealer 20.00 to handle the transfer.

I added a EOTech 557 and 3X magnifier with flip to side mount for my optics. A Troy Industries Vertical Battle grip. A Vickers VCAS sling. A Magpul ACS stock. A Magpul enhanced trigger guard. A Fenix Ta21 for my white light needs. Lastly, I have a Geissele SSA Combat Trigger on its way to round out my rifle.

I took the rifle to the range toady and ran 97 rounds of Wolf ammo and 800 rounds of Federal Value Pack ammo in a span of 3 hours. I had cleaned and lubed the rifle prior to the range session but did not see or feel the need to lube the rifle during my shooting session.

The gas regulator was left on the #2 setting and I had no malfunctions at all. I didn't fire from a bunch of unusual shooting positions since my injuries pretty much prevent that so I can't comment about any problems that may crop do to those conditions.

After sighting the EOTech and the Troy Battle sights I started to fire in groups of 2 to 7 rounds at 50 yards as quickly as I could to heat things up. After I fired 8 of the 24 PMAGs I brought along I pivoted the rifle open and took out the BCG. It was warm but that was it. It was also clean. Put BCG back in and continued shooting. Going from optics to the BUIS along with using the magnifier I continued shooting and getting myself used to the rifle and how it functioned and felt while recoiling I decided I really liked this rifle.

I took a 30 minute break to load up the remaining ammo I had and talk to some guys in the lanes around me. A lot of them had heard of the new Ruger and few stated they wanted to buy one but hadn't seen any in the Omaha area yet. The remaining rounds were shot by about 10 other people who were at the range and wanted to try the Ruger. No of them had any malfunctions either and quite a few rested the rifle on the PMAG and shot away.

When I got home I cleaned and lubed the rifle. It was easy. Almost a wipe off and oil then put away type of thing. I had to let the Hoppes sit on the regulator for a minute or two before the carbon loosened up enough to wipe away. So much easier to clean than my Colt even when my Colt barely fired 50 rounds.

I'm going to get some shots of my rifle and get them posted a bit later. Oh and carrier tilt was not noticed on my rifle. It's SN is 590-33XXX and the carrier has the rails machined on the sides. The receiver tube showed some paint missing but it is not missing any material. The tube is smooth as hell and where the paint is missing is just as smooth. There is no gouging from the carrier going on in the receiver tube of my rifle. Same with the trigger and hammer pin walking out issues others have reported.

Don't know who you are but I'm glad to hear your recovered enough to give that rifle a work out.

Great review too. Love to see some pics.

Good to hear you're doing better! BTW what grip, light mount & is the 557 mounted direct to the upper?

I'm just a nobody here but the grip is the Hogue monogrip that comes with the Ruger. The light mount is a VLTOR sized for a 1 inch light body. As far as the 557 it's mounted directly to the upper on the mount that came with the 557 MPO kit. It all attaches without any tools and the magnifier mount has an arm type mount and it goes on quickly. The Troy battle sight are about 1/3 co-witness but you have to take magnifier off or just flip it and the rear sight can be raised. Everything has gone on without any problems and I really like how it all works together.

Great looking and seemingly very functional rifle. Thank you for posting the pics and your range summary. Many of us are curious about the Ruger.

Also sorry to hear (read) of the head on but glad to know it sounds like you're on the mend with, hopefully, no serious long term ill affects.

Can you take a couple of pics where the receiver and receiver extension meet?

I'll get some pics of the receiver a bit later today and get them up. The paint or coating has flaked off but there wasn't any filing or shavings and you can run your fingernail over the area and you can't feel anything. No ridges or grooves and going back from the shiny area to the painted area you can't feel anything either.

As far as my injuries they pretty much ended 2 careers. My normal day job and my job as a volunteer firefighter. There is just too much damage to my right ankle and leg and the couple extra pounds of metal holding everything together doesn't help much either. It is fun setting off metal detectors at courthouses and airports though.

The Geissele SSA Combat Trigger arrived in the mail today. Installed it and headed to the range. Only fired 120 rounds but I love the Geissele trigger. It's lighter but not too much fore a defensive rifle and the pull is smooth with a sweet break. Well worth the money. Now I have to get one for the Colt.

The Ruger ran great and after I finish its break in I know this trigger really will improve its accuracy. Can't wait to start seeing what this rifle is capable of.

More shots of receiver tube. Used a magnifying unit and paint has flaked off. Not sure if carrier is striking tube at a tilted angle or not but there is no gouges or scratches, infact it is very smooth going from shiny part to the black coating. Here are some more pics.

Nice tricked out Ruger 556. Get well soon, I had to wear one of those immobilizer boots for a broken foot bone. It sucked...:(
