Earlier I asked for case recommendations here:

https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=39669

and was informed of the item produced by Tactical Tailor. One of the replies posted a link to another review of their case here:

http://www.weaponevolution.com/forum/showthread.php?t=537

……and was very positive. The description seemed to fit what I was looking for, so I got one and am reviewing it in this thread.

I like the main compartment, which is very well built with good padding and reinforced carry handles, and just fits a collapsed 16-inch AR with no leftover end space. Anything other than a standard GI mag will impinge on the edge of the case though when stored in the gun.

The two velcro hold-down straps are also very effective and can be positioned anywhere along the length of the case. There is no additional MOLLE or other webbing, which is nice if like me you don’t need it.

Here the outside of the case looks neat and trim.

This is an illusion though, resulting from my having placed another smaller padded case inside the front pocket......

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n232/blackscot/TT/4.jpg

......which is unpadded and therefore completely unsupported.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n232/blackscot/TT/5.jpg

Thus, without padding or any other support, the actual outside appearance leaves rather a lot to be desired. :(

From a practical perspective, the unsupported pocket slumps badly when holding almost any cargo – here just a stapler. (The profile distinctly resembles those of many of our local monthly IDPA match participants. )

The internal mag pockets are also just a sewn-in flat sheet of fabric.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n232/blackscot/TT/8.jpg

They are advertised to each hold “up to two” magazines, but perform poorly with Magpuls or even standard GI mags when doubled up (left and center), covering little more than half of the mag body, which impinges on the top edge of the outer pocket. A single mag fits deeper (right), but is almost too loose, sliding freely from side-to-side. There are no straps or flaps to retain the mags in the pockets.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n232/blackscot/TT/9.jpg

The shoulder strap is also very flimsy, being of lightweight webbing and having cheaply made fasteners. I can't see how anyone would want to carry this case with even a moderate load using this strap.

I bought the case for around $100, and if it had cost any more I would have returned it. Alternatives are considerably more expensive though, and didn’t come in the size and/or color I was looking for. Therefore, I removed the offending pockets to leave only the main compartment.....

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n232/blackscot/TT/11.jpg

......which as shown here can carry everything I need, including a loaded Specter Gear 3-mag vest, a fourth loose mag, a Blue Force Gear sling, a Dillon box holding maintenance and repair items, eye protection, and a target stapler. Also, zippers that access the side padding provide space for flat items like the firearm owner’s manual, a shooting logbook, and even a cleaning rod (targets would also fit easily here).

Because I want just enough space but not too much, the Tactical Tailor case -- with some rather major modification -- has been able to become my new AR carry-all. Those requring greater capacity are advised to possibly look elsewhere, especially if an outside pocket and/or mag pockets are a requirement.

Good piece of kit, at not a bad price. The one thing that has always made me chuckle is the name "Discreet Case" being that it is a big long gun bag built out of heavy nylon, usually in a color like coyote or OD.:p

With any LE, MIL, or other shooters certainly. Most sheeple seem nearly oblivious to everything though.

pretty much my same assessments based on using my same make/model, but if you have bought mine at least you'd have saved a couple bucks. :D

I would have -- the "buy now" button beat you literally by seconds.

thanks for the write up.

I'm going to look at pulling the external pocket off my case. That would certainly slim it down a little.

I got a black one 'way back when' and my thoughts are similar. I like the case, I like the strap it bit for the rifle but those pockets on the outside are just an abortion of an afterthought.

I was in their retail show room one day asking them who designed those POS pockets on the inside that drop your mags and shit all over the place if you lay the case on its side.

It think it would be a huge leap ahead if they just sew MOLLE across the inside of the external case inside the pocket and charge $20 more. The individual user could add whatever pouches, pockets, etc they wanted. Oh, and hey, TT coud sell more pouches that way.... could sell them as packages w/ choice of M4, AK, or 7.62 pouches to come with the case. Damn... it would be like marketing or something; cross-sell, up-sell, etc.

funny....I did the same thing with mine. That outer pocket is garbage.

I felt the same way. The only reason I haven't purchased a new case yet is because it would be a waste to let this one sit around. It does the job, but that is about it.

that pretty prominent Tactical Tailor logo doesn't help either. I had to remove it.
