George Matheis retired in 2008 after nearly two decades of civilian and military law enforcement. He is the founder of Modern Combative Systems LLC. MCS provides training to civilians, military, and law enforcement. During his career, George attended in excess of 40 specialized courses in the areas of firearms, defensive tactics, officer survival, crisis negotiations, and edged weapons becoming an instructor in several of these areas. This was in addition to training in several traditional martial art disciplines. He was also a plank owner of his agency's SWAT team. Due to his vast training influences George is known as a trainer who thinks outside the box. He was responsible for several forward thinking programs within his agency to include force on force training using non law enforcement role players and air soft weapons, the county's first patrol rifle program, and his agency’s adoption and issue of a tactical folding knife, for which George provided training. Through experience and research, George saw a lack of continuity in what was being taught in the way of open hand combatives, impact weapons, edged weapons, and firearms, and the realities of interpersonal combat. With that knowledge he created the Modern Combative System, which primarily deals with open hand, stick, knives, and firearms within seven yards. In 2007, Modern Combative Systems provided edged weapons training to the Air Force Special Operation Commands DAGRE (Deployed Aircraft Ground Response Element) at Hurlburt Field FL home of the Air Commandos. In 2008, his Spontaneous Attack Survival for Edged Weapons was presented to the Maryland Department of Corrections Special Operations Group. RMJ Tactical and Sharkee Training Knives have also selected George as their law enforcement and military consultant and trainer.
George has also produced DVDs on impact and edged weapons and is currently writing a book on open hand combatives and is considered by many to be a subject matter expert in the use of force and edged weapons.
