I figured this might be a good way to start things off.

Where are some of the places in NC that are good to go shooting.

Really great to have a NC-specific training forum; thanks The_Katar!

I am really looking for a good outdoor range with 100+ meter capabilities AND that is NFA (specifically machinegun) friendly within 30-40 minutes of the Raleigh/Durham area.

Anyone know of a place that fits this bill?

Uwharrie Nation Forest has a range, is in Troy NC. Not sure how far you are from there.

Josh- Check out the Uwharrie Nat'l forest. Might want to call about NFA items but I seem to remember they're ok.

You would be around an hour away; give or take 30 min depending where you are in the Triangle.

Make sure you PM me and bring some of your flamethrowers!:D

I live over in western NC - Mitchell county. We don't have many places to shoot, a rifle range is being contructed in Avery county, advertising a 600 yard rifle range, 50 yard pistol range, and archery area. Supposed to be open in spring, I'll post the specifics when it's available.
Otherwise, I shoot in a privately owned livestock field, about appx. 700 yards max distance (ridge to ridge, only about 200 yds of flat area), and can go shoot with some people when I'm not working, need about a week or two notice in advance, pm me.
Other than that, I'm stuck asking landowners permission to hunt/shoot on their land - a long distance range is badly needed around here!

Eastern NC Firing Range in Dudley NC (technically, it's Goldsboro).

Not that far away from Fayetteville, little over an hour give or take the traffic on 13.

Ken was a good guy and open to "new" guys the couple times I've been out there.

Josh, you may want to hit him up too. He's got a pistol, 100 and a 275 rifle (altho that's on a separate piece of land). We talked last year about some SBR stuff and he didn't seem to be a Nazi when it comes to NFA items, altho MG stuff I'm not too sure of. (And it's probably give or take an hour for you to head down 70)

I live in the Raleigh area when I'm home. Apparently this is the only place around there to shoot AR's.

If anyone is trying to put some classes together in the NC area they can count me in.

Here's what I got...

Shooter Express in Belmont, like exit 27 off I-85. 20mins outta Charlotte. Rifle and pistol, 25Yards max indoor. Like 6 rifle bays and 10 pistol bays. They have a couple MGs to rent and a decent gun store. Been shooting there on and off for 15 years. Good guys. Super busy on the weekends. Like $12-15 a hour

Rankin Lake (Gaston Police Training Center) 30 mins outta Charlotte off 321. I drove out this weekend but didnt get to shoot. 100 yards rifle. Its a police range and open to civilians only on Sat. Like $8 a day.

Rowan Wildlife club in Salisbury. 30 mins outta Charlotte off I-85. I used to shoot there weekly. Really nice place, very well taken care of. 200,100,50yrd positions on the rifle range. like 25 concrete benches. Like 10 pistol pits/bays, most are like 25 yards wide by 50 yards deep. I have shot carbine there and wasnt bothered. Nice Skeet trap and sporting clays areas. Members only except for matches. I have seen NRA High Power and SASS matches there. Like $600 to get in the door with a sponsor, $125 yearly.

Effirds in Albermale NC. 30 mins outta Charlotte out 24/27. This is a range behind a guys barn. Out to 150 yards with random steel plates on the 100 and 150 yard berms. Quiet place. I was a member and liked going there because I was usually alone. He just put up a skeet range. Has a small pistol pit with some steel. Members only, like $125 a year.

Range 37 in Lillington NC, like 15 mins outta Bragg. Pretty nice place, with a little love it could be a really badass place. Out to 100yrds now (plans for out to 300m I think). BIG outdoor shoothouse, needs some work (think thats being done now) but will be cool when done. A few pistol pits with steel and a carbine pit. Decent little gunstore there too. I have shot there several times and the guys out there are really cool. Not sure what price is now, but non-members are cool. I remember they were doing something for Mil. guys. They have changed ownership.

Trigger time in Carthage NC. Like 30-40 mins from Bragg. Nice place. Took a couple classes out there. Big place. All outdoors. Several rifle/pistol GP ranges. Not sure about range usage, prices.

If someone has land that is "shootable", I have backhoes, dozers, dumptrucks, skidsteers, etc for my usage. I'd be willing to work something out. I have friends working on some land in the area.

If anyone in the Charlotte area ever wants to get up and shoot him me up. PM me. Im in the Raleigh/Durham area alot also. Im up near Asheville at least once a month as well.

PLEASE let me know when this is available, here in Hickory all we have for the public is 25yd pistol. Some private ranges but they are pretty expensive. I would also be intrested in shooting matches. thanks

I'd be in for any type of training in or reasonable distance from Raleigh. I'm new in town and seeking out new places to shoot, train, and shop.

A big +1 for the 'Wake county firearms education center' That place is 10 mins from my new place. I went down for the safety brief ($15)and like 50-60 people were in the class. Couple of chicks were taking notes, and two dudes showed up in uniform (army) Looked like the full gammit of experience to me. They even had a 50Q written test.

To address someones question on here, they are class III friendly, but no full auto and be damn skippy to have your papers on you as the sherrifs dept 'owns' the range.

They allow anything up to and not including 50bmg. Guy said they aren't equipped for that. Cross-draws are also a no-go. Drills are allowed.

The staff there seemed pretty cool and very knowledgeable. They did seem to be safety nazi's which is a good thing with so many zero experience people around. They take safety to the point where when you have your weapon in a case on the table, it is to be oriented with the muzzle downrange. The rate is $10 an hour for a lane, with sharing OK.

I'm going to try to get up there this week for some trigger time, I'll post my impresion here afterwards.

Since you're already up there, there's a little spot out in the country that you can go shooting on ANY time, at the Haywood/Jackson Co. line, right off 23/74, near the Blue Ridge Parkway.

As you pass the rest area (on the east-bound side of the highway) well on past Hazelwood - headed towards Sylva - you're coming up on the Blue Ridge Parkway. JUST before you get there, there's a little road that shoots off to the right, called Fern Trail.

http://vtiles03.mqcdn.com/tiles/std/vy/map?s=4700&y=32898&x=20166http://vtiles04.mqcdn.com/tiles/std/vy/map?s=4700&y=32898&x=20167
http://vtiles03.mqcdn.com/tiles/std/vy/map?s=4700&y=32897&x=20166http://vtiles04.mqcdn.com/tiles/std/vy/map?s=4700&y=32897&x=20167

Head down there about a quarter mile or so, to the first curve in the road. There'll be a wide spot on the side to your left, and this time of year - if the undergrowth isn't too thick yet, you should see a gate blocking your way up a trail. You can park there, and hike up. Follow the road - it'll switchback to the left halfway up, and you'll eventually come to a clearing, that has 80' high berms, with 60' - 100' high pines and oaks on top of that. It's an old, abandoned, solid landfill (sofas, washing machines, cabinets, etc.), and the Haywood Co. Sheriff's Dept. told us years ago it was OK to go shooting there - you'll find TONS of brass and steel casings there on the ground. You can set up targets, and run a "course" of your own design there without being hassled! :D

My college wingman and I laid down a wall of brass up there 20 years ago, when you could buy brass-cased Norinco .223 and Norinco 7.62x39 from Enka Candler Pawn & Gun World, for $.99/box o' 20.

THOSE were the days... ;)

I shoot here: phashoots.com located in cnetral NC, just outside of Lexington NC. Several pistol bays, 100 yard rifle range with plenty of points, a 200 yard range, ten pistol bays. We also have a five stand clay position. Rowan has been mentioned, and I use to go there quite a bit to shoot skeet. They have a GREAT layout of regulation skeet fields.

Any good >100 yard ranges within 1 hour of the Winston-Salem/GSO area that anyone is aware of? I tried Westmar which was OK.. but very very small, and only 3 spots for a 100 yard range.

PHA has a 100 yard range with multiple firing points. The 200 yard range has 100 and 200 target stands but is not as big. They have matches of some sort just about every weekend. The gate is opened and non-members can come shoot the matches. Any member will happily show you around. I'll probably be there Saturday for the plate match.
