GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. UNITED STATES MARINES REPRESENT THE BEST YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN OUR NATION HAS TO OFFER. TO BE A MARINE IS TO BE A MEMBER OF AMERICA'S WARRIOR CLASS - TO BE ONE OF THE FEW WHO STEPS FORWARD WITH THE COURAGE AND CONVICTION TO FACE WHATEVER DANGERS AWAIT. OUR NATION EXPECTS HER MARINES TO BE READY WHEN THE NATION CALLS; TO LEAVE FAMILY AND THE COMFORTS OF HOME BEHIND; TO MARCH INTO BATTLE AND THRIVE UNDER AUSTERITY; AND TO COME HOME UNDER A VICTORY PENNANT.
2. FROM AL ANBAR IN THE WEST OF IRAQ, TO HELMAND PROVINCE IN THE SOUTH OF AFGHANISTAN, OUR CORPS OF MARINES CAN ALWAYS EXPECT TO BE FOUND WHERE THE FIGHT IS TOUGHEST. SUCH IS OUR HISTORY. TODAY, AS WE WRITE THE FINAL CHAPTER ON OUR VICTORY IN IRAQ, WE WILL INCREASINGLY TAKE THE FIGHT TO THE ENEMY IN AFGHANISTAN AND ADD NEW PAGES TO OUR LEGACY IN PLACES CALLED DELARAM, NOW ZAD, AND GARMSIR. ONE DAY, WE WILL RETURN TO OUR NAVAL HERITAGE AND PATROL THE HIGH SEAS WITH OUR NAVY BROTHERS. SUCH IS OUR FUTURE.
3. AS WE CELEBRATE OUR CORPS' 234TH BIRTHDAY, WE FIRST PAUSE TO REFLECT AND PAY TRIBUTE TO THOSE MARINES WHO HAVE GIVEN THE LAST FULL MEASURE IN DEFENSE OF FREEDOM. My 12th-grade son is downstairs doing chin-ups with 60lbs. strapped to his back. He works out like three Texas high school football players every night. He really wants to be a good Marine. He ships to USMC boot camp in June after a year in the delayed entry program.
I'm a proud father.
Bill, hopefully your Son will get to experience a Marine Corps Ball. I never had a chance, I was always on deployment haha. Best wishes to your Son!

My unit had our ball this past Saturday. It's probably going to be my last one and it was the most fun one I've had. My first was in Fallujah in 04 with a giant butter Iwo memorial in the chow hall :D

I think I knew that. I was just messing around. I'd love to attend a Marine Ball with my son someday.
Be prepared for about an hour+ of ceremony, then 4hrs to 2 days of drunken debauchery, arson, worshiping of graven images, casual vandalism (Coke machines are HEAVY!) and oher fun events. Try not to be disturbed by the piles of skulls next to the bloody altar, it's perfectly normal.
I got off my plane back from Afghan (via Qatar) the day before yesterday, so now I'm combating a biblical hangover on top of the jet lag.
