fell in love with a hk p2000 in .40 today. 10 rd mags here in ny unfortunately. haven't shot it as they are not a range and don't rent guns but, this gun fit like a glove and pointed great. the g19 doesn't fit my hand well and i don't shoot it well.
the other gun there was another hk p2k but in .357sig and had the lem trigger. the lem felt very funky to me. the p2k in .40 was sa/da with no safety and decocker at the back of the slide.
will the lem grow on me or should i trust my initial impressions? how does the .40 p2k fire/recoil? had a sig p229 in .40 once, how does the recoil compare? the sig was like butter.
the p2k in .40 sa/da with night sights was $850, the p2k with lem in.357 had fixed sights but would be around the same with nights installed.
what say you guys?
as a side note, how much bigger is the hk45? i have tiny hands and the p2k is perfect as are 1911s.

that's what i wanted to hear. i really shouldn't be spending the money but i loved the way this gun looked, felt and pointed and how simple it seemed. love the rear of slide decocker as opposed to the the standard hk decocker. i do have to ask about the lem though. should i avoid it? it felt so strange and had a mile of take-up. the sa/da felt better but if the lem is something well worth getting used to, i'd take the plunge as well as the .357 caliber.

I have the P2000SK in .40S&W, the sub-compact version of the one that you are looking at. I also have the USPc LEM in .40S&W, the predecessor of the P2000 you are considering. To compare them I have an issued P229 DAK and own a P229 DAO, both in .40S&W. I shoot 155gr duty loads exclusively through them all. To sum it all up, based on my experience with the four I can tell you that you will not regret buying the P2000 as it will be a much easier weapon for you to shoot compared to the SIG because of the superior ergonomics. The P229 may have been state of the art in 1988 but a lot has happened since then, besides SIG's enormous slide in quality. Buy the P2000, you'll never look back in regret.

The LEM is a love it or hate it trigger system. You should really rent or meet up with someone who has the LEM to see if you like it. It took a while for me to get used to the LEM on my P2000 but once I did I shot it well. Although if I did it again I would buy the V3 DA/SA.

One thing to consider is that HK discontinued the .357sig P2000 (and USPc). If you purchase the .357sig you can find the .40 P2000 barrel and swap calibers as everything else is the same. You can order the .40 barrel from Midway USA. .357sig barrels are VERY hard to find since being discontinued.

I owned P2000 LEMs in .40 and 9mm. The ergos are perfect. I found the 9 much more pleasant to shoot and sold the .40.

Is the .40 bad in the recoil dept? They didn't have a 9mm. I'm in NY and figured if I had to have 10 rds, might as well make them .40. How does the recoil compare to a sig p229 in .40? To me, that was a breeze, very pleasant to shoot.

I find that, personally, I can control the 9mm more easily. Thus, I have moire confidence, etc. I believe the 9mm is an adequate round for self-defense. If you might have to shoot through barriers, the .40 might be the better choice.

No barrier shooting here. I've heard that 12 rds of 9mm fit into a 10 rd .40 mag. That's an idea. That means I'd have to order the 9mm version. All this and I was originally looking for a p226 because I have preban mags for one.
I don't mind a little snappy as long as its not bad on follow ups or painful. Will the snappy recoil of .40 in a polymer gun that fits my hand perfect be any worse than an aluminum gun in .40 ie sig p229? Something training will take care of?

I'm a big fan of the P2000 series. I have DA/SA and LEM and I can tell you that I'm not a big fan of the LEM trigger. But I have it there, in case I want to show someone something different. I have over 7k rounds through one P2000 alone and she's been a great little pistol. The only malfunctions I've had were due to really really crappy out-of spec reloads and when I tried loading 13 rounds of 9mm in to .40 cal 10 round mags.

The problem with loading 13 9mm rounds into a 10 rd 40 cal magazine is that after a while the feed lips begin to separate and the round is fed into the chamber at a very high angle. After a while this becomes a a problem and causes a very odd malfunction. Where hollow points hit the top of the barrel hood and cause a failure to feed.

It happened to me several times and I couldn't understand why. Until one day I compared the feed angle of a 9mm magazine to a 40 cal magazine, I then took a used 40 mag and compared it to a new one.

I've since then switched to factory 9mm magazines in a 9mm pistol. To me the extra 3 rounds aren't worth it.

In closing I'd like to say that the P2000 is a great weapon, it shoots great, points well and feels good. Even my friends that don't like plastic guns, like the P2000. Stick with caliber specific magazines, and you'll have a pistol that will serve you well.

Put me in the "love it" category when it comes to the LEM trigger group. As for recoil, like I stated above, I am shooting 155gr. hollow point duty loads through the P2000SK, the sub-compact, a G27 sized pistol. I am also using flat magazine floor-plate, minus the finger thingy. I find the recoil more than manageable and consistently shoot, 248-250 on a 250 point qual course with it. Most people with .40's shoot far milder 180gr, which in the fuller-sized P2000 (just a bit bigger than a G19/23) is quite manageable.

I bought it! p2k v3 with night sights, 3 mags total and 160 rds of AE .40 for $910 out the door

The P2000 is the finest mid-sized handgun available--IMHO. I shot one around 13,000 rounds a few years back and it never failed me--despite a steady ration of crappy "Monarch" steel ammo. It was and LEM and I thought it was fine.

P2000 is probably my all time favorite CCW, and my one and only fo-tay.

You should try the SK for concealed carry, absolutely love mine.

P2000s are nice, but I still prefer the USP compact more. Then again, mine is a Variant 9 and that is not available on a P2000. Variant 9 is single action only with a manual safety ala 1911 since you mentioned those. It's another option if you don't like the LEM or traditional DA/SA.

No one answered your other question, the HK45 is waaaay larger in size then a P2000. It's more of a duty/service sidearm rather than a concealed carry one. It's errgonomics are very nice however, and they are very accurate like all of HKs pistols.

Can't wait to shoot this gun a lot. I've had a usp .45 and it killed it for me for HK because it was way too big for my small hands. The P2000 changed that for me. Besides 1911s I've never felt such a comfortable gun. I put 100 rds through it in the rain yesterday and wished I had more time and a few hundred rds of ammo. Maybe the HK.45 will follow and 1 of my nighthawks will say bye bye

If you are going to carry it concealed I recommend that you get the flat floor-plates for your magazines.

check out the USP compact in 45 if you ever get the itch for a 45 again...
i don't really care for the grip on the full size USP's, but the compacts feel great to me. feels similar to a glock 19, but better... and i really like my 19.

Or the HK45c since it is basically the same size and as the same grip as the P2000.

I love the P2000 series. I've been wanting a P2000 .40 for a while now. I have plenty of .40 magazines left over from my failed experiment mentioned above.

Congrats on a great piece.

I have a P2000 in .357 Sig, v3, DA/SA. Without a doubt the favorite handgun in my collection. Great for ccw, but as mentioned above, get the flat magazine floorplates for concealed use. I personally prefer the .357sig over the .40 and after shooting a Sig P229 and a Glock 32 (both also .357), I can say that the HK has the most controllability and least punishing recoil. Fantastic compact pistol and I would recommend it to anyone.

I want some mags, a holster and ammo. Really excited about this gun. I bet another will be in my possession before too long. Either a back-up or an HK45

My current carry gun is a 9mm P2000 with a modified LEM trigger. The Firing Pin Block Spring was replaced with the equivalent part from a DA USP and the 14lb mainspring was replaced with the 12lb Wolff version. Dropped pull weights from 8lbs LEM and 16lbs full double action to 5.5lbs and 12lbs. I absolutely love it.

I also highly recommend the flat magazine base plate for carry. It makes it much less likely that something will hang up on the base plate. I only use one on the mag that is actually in the gun to help avoid this issue. I leave the regular plates on the extra mags as I have not had a problem with them hanging up on things.

Yeah it's funny how HKs multiply like that isn't? :D
