Which do you use?

For many years, I have always been choice #3, even though only 1911's ever really worked right with thumbs up for me. Nowadays my only autos are compact 9's, so I'm considering changing to choice #1. Would be difficult to re-train after so many years though.

None of those really. I cam my support hand forward and lock the wrist. The thumb points at the target, basically. The strong hand thumb is on top of the support hand, similar to #2, but I have more palm on the grip.

Of course each method has individual variations.

BTW -- I just got back from store-fondeling a CZ compact. Felt really good using a thumbs-down hold but -- like almost every compact 9 I've tried -- the grip tang dug into the web of the hand too much when attempting thumbs up.

Interesting poll results. Keep'em coming guys!

I voted thumbs up, but that because the only handgun I've shot enough to develop any kind of consistency on is my 1911. Once it's sold and I've got my new M&P, that may change. Or it might not... We'll see.

I change my grip depending upon the gun. With my Glock 19 both thumbs are forward. With a revolver, both thumbs are bent and pointing down, support thumb over strong thumb.

this is how i do it. and opposite of the OP's pic, my support thumb is WAY more forward than that. i got huge hands, on a G19, my thumb is close to the end of the slide. on a gov't 1911, the tip of my thumb gets to the end of the frame
