Seriously considering sending in my M&P9C to have Ben work his magic. Has anyone here done this with an M&P compact? Would you mind sharing pictures?

Thanks all!

Just get it done, you wont be disappointed.

Check out pictures of the full size boresight M&P's for inspiration, its essentially the same thing only with a slightly smaller grip. :)

I would recommend Bens full package, particularly the smoothing and contouring he does under the triggerguard. That procedure alone is PRICELESS on the M&P since the factory design in that area is probably the biggest shortcoming of the pistol platform in both full size and compact variants.

Magsz,

Do you know what Gentleben's current turn around time is? I know he was backlogged a few months ago.

Just email him, he's always gotten back to me and my buddies very quickly.

Magsz

Ben will probably always be backlogged.

The attention to detail that he puts into his work commands time and lots of it.

Ben is a very approachable guy, go ahead and email him if you have specific questions, he will make sure you're taken care of.

I was recently quoted 10-12 weeks. YMMV

Gentle Ben
11-19-09, 20:18
Decodeddiesel, I've done quite a few M&P compacts. I'll look around and see if I have any pics of one.

Magzs, thanks for the kind words. ETA: the undercut and polish beneath the trigger guard is standard on every M&P job, same as with Glocks. Both guns benefit greatly from it.

On a side note: today I got in a Glock for some upgrades that I'd done a reduction on about 1.5 years ago, and I was embarrassed to see what my work looked like back then. I've learned a lot since then via trial and sometimes error, and also via suggestions I get back from people who are using my guns.

So far I haven't located any MP-C pics. However, I will contact a couple of guys with MP-C's I recently customized and see if they can send me some pics.

In the meantime, this should give you an idea of what your M&P could look like when I'm done having my way with it...

Gentle Ben

That gun was part of a set I did for a husband and wife for their anniversary.

Their best friend, who's one of my customers, contacted me from overseas to commission the gift. He left everything up to me, including the choice of the guns (purchased new from me), modifications, etc; his only stipulations were to make hers as "girlie" as possible, and keep the price under $X,XXX.

They both have my standard M&P grip package, textured trigger guard, CT lasergrips textured to match the grip, Trijicon night sights with contrasting colors, and trigger jobs.

Here's the his/hers pair, and his alone.

Since you're in such a picture posting mood, do you have some pics you can post up of FDE M&Ps you have worked on?

Normally I could care less about looks, but I am interested in what the discoloration you get from the stippling looks like with that plastic. I have an M&P45 that I am also thinking of sending in.

LOL. Sorry for the delay...I've been standing in front of the mirror a lot lately doing the Buffalo Bill dance from SOTL. :o

Decoded, here are some pics of a Glock and M&P. Note that on the M&P, I took the texturing on the backstrap higher than I normally do. The standard texture is as shown in the pics above.

The FDE grips do discolor, but I haff my vays of making zem discolor evenly, so that it looks intentional. What I will also be doing very soon offering customers the option of having the textured areas of their grip Cerakoted in a color that contrasts the grip. For example, a OD frame gun could have a black grip, a black frame gun could have a gray or OD grip, etc. It's purely cosmetic, but it's a nice aesthetic touch, and some people (myself included) like the look. I'll post pics of my FDE M&P45 with black grip when it's done.

Magzs, I missed your question earlier. The pink M&P is Duracoat. I had Trent (aka the Duracoat Wizard) at SAI do it, as my equipment isn't set up for Cerakote yet (and I don't think Cerakote is available in pink).

Ben has worked on and customized 4 of my M&Ps (and some other goodies) for me. He is one of the few plastic surgeons that I would trust working on a Crimson Trace Laser Grip.

My shitty pictures do not do Ben's work justice (they were taken on a cell phone...sue me...:D)

On my compact, Ben did a super aggressive texture on the right side of the gun, a light texture on the left (so it wont rub my skin raw), undercut/smooth trigger guard, did the forward flats and stippled the trigger guard.

Oh I'm sure it'll be awesome, I'm in that situation where I almost keep forgetting I sent it in a few months back. I'm almost thinking it'd be cool to see some of your stippling applied to something like the forearm of a Benelli M4. Hmmm...

I also need to drop you a line about your recommendations on replacement sights for an M&P Pro. I'll drop you an email tomorrow.

Gentle Ben

You're kind of limited on sight options for the M&P. Although Matt7184 just informed me that some new ones (Warrens?) are becoming available for the long slides.

I've done factory and Surefire shotgun fore-ends. They come out very functional and nice-looking, IMHO.

I also textured the entire fore-end of a couple of Robinson Armament VEPRs (in addition to the grip, and shortening the buttstock)

All my guns go from the factory to BEN, Currently there is no one better that really understands not only esthetics but functionality. Ben not only is dedicated to attention to detail he is also a great shooter and it is my belief this is what helps excel his ability to create something that looks cool but actually allows the shooter to perform better.

Thanks Ben

I got to go down and spend some time with Ben at his shop and I'm impressed. It's obviously not the Taj Mahal but it's functional, well kept, well secured (and getting even moreso) and professional. And in talking with him about what he's planning for the future I'm really impressed.

Ben is one of those guys that I'm always telling my non-shooting friends about because he's a great guy and a very attentive business man and if it weren't for the shooting sports I never would have met him. While the gun bidness is surely full of more than it's fair share of scalawags, those that shine REALLY shine, and Ben is one of those shining stars.

and it doesn't hurt that the lil' woman is totally stoked with the G19 that Ben did for us. :D

Gentle Ben
11-23-09, 09:38
Thanks Rob. You're a notoriously hard customer to please, so I'm glad my digs and the G19 live up to your standards. ;)

My shop is more along the lines of a "Garage Mahal" or "Man Cave." Rugged and short on creature comforts, but functional...a place where I can do my work efficiently and in peace, crank up my tunes and not worry about the cabinet shop and engine repair guys on either side of me complaining, or simply kick back with a cigar if there's time. Life is good.

It's difficult to give an accurate estimate, because sometimes I'll have more productive days/weeks when I wasn't expecting to, and vice-versa. Basically, I give it my best guesstimate based on my current workload and what I know is inbound, and hope for your patience and mercy if I take longer.

Anyway, enough alibis. ;) Time varies depending on the gun and the complexity of the project. If you wanted the 10-8 package on your M&P, you'd be in the 10-12 week range.

Any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. More info on my website, too.

General statement regarding my turnaround time: I don't receive a gun, let it sit for 10 weeks, then knock it out in the 11th. I do the guns in batches, and cycle them through over and over until they are finished. It usually takes 3-4 cycles for a batch of to be completed.

Sounds good to me. I'm looking at replacing my Glock with the M&P for duty use. I love the way the M&P feels but the trigger is a no go after shooting Glocks for so long. I short stroke the reset too much.

Gentle Ben
11-24-09, 08:34
Swatcop1911, you'll get a more distinct trigger reset with my trigger job. For a duty gun I probably wouldn't make it too light, but I can definitely get rid of most of the 'crunch' and staginess, and give it a more Glock-like (tactile/audible) reset.

(Many thanks to Hilton Yam for teaching me how to do M&P trigger jobs.)

M4Fundi, I hear ya. Once my wife saw that, she's demanding that I do her carry Glock in burnt orange to match her car, and many purses and shoes in that color. Awhile back I had a friend of mine make her a lead-filled sap in burnt orange leather.

That's awesome. I saw the one you put together for Dan Mosse, and yeesh, these thing never stop being impressive. Have you ever timed from start to finish what the average stipple job takes you in terms of pure man hours?

The 21 looks the dogs danglies.

I'll confess to having the mag cut outs initially done to my Glock 19 for mostly the aesthetics. They actually work really well when reloading from weird positions.

thanks DJK!

The 21 with the magwell cutouts belongs to a guy in a ban state. He can only use hi-cap preban, non-drop free mags in it.

Turns out that after I did the work, his preban, non-drop free mags will drop free.

That HK45 looks great! That stippling is something that I would like to eventually get done on mine.

The HKs take a nice crisp texture. More crisp than a Glock.

Not to keep this thread totally off topic, but don't you have a pretty nice mod to a Gen II G17 coming down the pipe Ben;)

Hey Ben, got your PM and when I'm not having to use an iPhone to post I'll hit you up with the info you requested.

Just out if curiosity I was looking at you pics of the refurb G17 where you fixed the old "mods."

I acutally did like the "before" pics better than the "after" until I figured out that your work was shown in the "before."

Might be why some said they liked it better. Just a thought.

Damn, no wonder I was getting hate mail for ruining a perfectly good pistol.

I was wondering how a perfectly well executed frame mod turned into such a hatchet-job. :D

Second your right Ben it's Ian's fault and Matt's as well who takes photos next to a plaid shirt. Hey Matt please tell your girlfriend I said Hi. I miss her, I mean you guys LOL

IT WAS A PLAID BLANKET!!!!! Next time I'll take pictures of the gun on my Snuggie.

She is still mad that you arent coming down here. I tried to grow a beard for her to substitute but I can only do Travis' version of a beard :(
[She says hi and dont shave the beard!]

You're kind of limited on sight options for the M&P. Although Matt7184 just informed me that some new ones (Warrens?) are becoming available for the long slides.

MLE has .190" night front sights from Warren (and sets too). I ordered a front and should have it in sometime this week.
