I was reading the "Combat Medic" thread started by Dick Manley. And I am in almost in the same boat (share a lot with Danny Boy too). He got a lot of great advice on his MOS, so I was wondering if there where any 68X's around here? I would love to hear more about this MOS.

A little background, I am a perm. resident with a B.S in psych and currently in a masters programme and will be joining the Alabama Nat. Guard. So if there are any other expats out there your experiences in the US millitary would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks-guys

You are in the same boat as Dick. There is no reason for you to join as a 68X. Your background makes you eligible to join as an officer. The army will pay for you to complete your Doctorate and you will owe the some time after you complete your training. The Army is short mental health personnel and you should be able to join easily if you are a US citizen. Here is a link with some helpful information.

Thanks DragonDoc, I am still working on my citizenship. But because I do have a degree I am able to enlist as an E4. After I finish my masters I'm going to apply to the millitary medical services university. But that has to wait untill I get my citizenship.....well I'll keep you guys updated

Good news is that enlisted men can fast track citizenship. So if you join as a 68X (Jedi Knight as I call them) you will still get to do counseling and some of the functions of a Psychologist/Psychiatrist. You will also learn the logistics of running a clinic as well as the basic soldiering. Chances are you will end up on a Combat Stress Control team and work closely with the Joes on the line. Good Luck and let us know how your journey ends.

Like I said, I'll post my journey here. So I had to postpone my trip to MEPS....I lost my MOS. Now I have to wait until another spot opens :(. My recruiter called me this morning and I have been in a foul mood all day.....

What happened? Don'tlet the recruiter talk you into another MOS.

No worries, I have my mind set. I have to work tonight, and I won't be able to make it to MEPS in the morning. It starts at 4:00am and it is like an hour or two from here. The recruiter asked to reserve the MOS before I got my wife on board fully so it has been reserved for about two weeks. The guard will no longer hold it for another week. I am just praying another slot will open up

Good news and bad news. My MOS is once again open. Headed to Montgomery for MEPS on Monday night, MEPS on Tuesday morning!!!

The bad news, the wife is no longer so sure about this and is worried. Please, anyone I need advice. How did you guys in the military deal with your wives and their concerns?

A word of warning: The only hot women in the Army are medics. You are about to be sorely tempted, over and over and OVER AND OVER.

Just FYI.

Man, I LOVE THIS STUFF!!!! I am actually looking forward to BCT after today. Mind you I did not eat enough (was sick all week) and I didn't hydrate correctly so PT almost killed me, but I'll be ready tomorrow and next month will be even better as I would have been back in the gym for a full month (my coaches are all former or active millitary except one or two) I am really thinking about becoming a career soldier!!

Well I'm done, bout to get a shower an all that good stuff!! HOOAH :D

You'll be excited, but it will be about 3 rough weeks to get adjusted to the training environment, at least that's what it took me. I was OSUT 31B so I can't comment on Sam Houston or the medical training, but from what I hear you'll have a better time in AIT then I did.
